Development of a System Dynamics Computer Model for Efficient Operations of an Industrial Water Supply System (공업용수 공급시스템의 효율적인 운영을 위한 시스템다이내믹스 모형의 개발)

  • In this study, a System Dynamics (SD) simulation model for the efficient operations of an industrial water supply system was developed by investigating the feedback loop mechanisms involved in the operations of the system. The system was modeled so that as demand is determined the water supply quantity of intake pumping stations and dams are allocated. The main feedback loop showed that many variables such as the combinations of pump operation, unit electric power(kWh/$m^3$), unit electric power costs(won/$m^3$), water level of water way tunnel, suction pressure and discharge of pumping station, and tank and service reservoir water level had causal effects and produced results depending on their causal relationship. The configurations of the model included an intake pumping station model, water way tunnel model, pumping station model (including the tank and service reservoir water level control model), and unit electric power model. The model was verified using the data from the case study industrial water supply system that consisted of a water treatment plant, two pumping stations and four dams with an annual energy costs of 5 billion won. It was shown that the electric power costs could have been saved 7~26% during the past six years if the operations had been based on the findings of this study.

A study on the Urban Growth Model of Gimhae City Using Cellular Automata (셀룰라 오토마타를 이용한 김해시의 도시성장모형에 관한 연구 - 1987~2001년을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to decide an appropriate neighborhood and a transition rule of cellular automata by analyzing the past growth process of urban areas in Gimhae. With cellular automata which can manage the change based on the dynamic model and time, this study analyzes the urban growth of Gimhae from 1987 to 2001. Also, through the simulation of different types for neighborhood and transition rules, we can find the appropriate neighborhood and the transition rule for Gimhae. In conclusion, the forecast of physical urban growth pattern is more accurate under conditions when the number of matrixes for the neighborhood is small, the shape of the neighborhood is rectangular, "${\alpha}$" value, which control the pace of urban growth, is low and the transition possibility ($P_{ij}$) is high.

Estimation of Tsunami Risk Zoning on the Coasts Adjacent to the East Sea from Hypothetical Earthquakes (공백역 지진에 의한 동해에 연한 해안에서의 지진해일 위험도 산정)

  • Prognostic characteristics of hypothetical tsunamis in the East Sea are further discussed based on numerical simulations using linear long wave theory than the last paper(Choi et al). As for choice of source zones, we used 28 cases based on fault parameters of hypothetical earthquakes and 76 cases based on simple initial surface shapes of tsunamigenic earthquakes selected by the seismic gap theory. As a result, the wave heights along the whole coastline adjacent to the East See of tsunamis due to these hypothetical earthquake are presented. Analyses also lead us to conclude that the selection of geographical zones with low risk of tsunamis can be used as a tool for coastal disaster mitigation planning.

  • Many sea accidents such as collisions and groundings of vessels were occurred due to the lack of sufficient manoeuvring capability of vessels. Therefore IMO adopted 'The interim standards of ship manoeuvrability by Resolution A.751(18) and the standards have been applied to vessels of 100m or more in length and all chemical tankers and gas carriers regardless of the length, which were constructed on or after 1 July 1994. The IMO manoeuvrability standards are divided into three kinds as bellows; (1) Turning capability standards : Estimated values in design stage are to be certified by turning circle test of the actual vessel. (2) Course keeping quality standards : Estimated values in design stage are to be certified by $10^\sqsubset\;and\;20^\sqsubset$ Zig-Zag tests of the actual vessel. (3) Shortest stopping distance standards : Estimated values in design stage are to be certified by the shortest stopping distance tested by the actual vessel. In this paper, the authors computed the values of the manoeuvring standards of several vessels from their original design and compared them with those results from experiments of the model ships and also examined the values and concluded about the validity of IMO Manoeuvrability standards.

Rate of Probe Vehicles for the Collection of Traffic Information on Expressways (고속도로 교통정보 취득을 위한 프루브 차량 비율 산정 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the minimum proportion of probe vehicles for obtaining expressway traffic information using VISSIM, a micro traffic simulation model, between Yongin IC and Yangji IC on Yeongdong Expressway. 7,200 scenarios were created for the experiment, and 40 scenarios were adopted using the Latin hypercube sampling method because it was difficult to perform all the scenarios through experiments. The reliability of the experiment was improved by adding a situation when the general situation and the accident situation exist. In the experiments, the average travel time of probe vehicles at different market penetration rates were compared with the average travel time of the entire vehicles. As a result, the minimum market penetration rate of probe vehicles for obtaining expressway traffic information was found to be 45%. In addition, it is estimated that 25% market penetration rate of probe vehicle can meet 70% of traffic situations in accident scenario.

Image Transmission Using Designed Source-Channel Combined Coder for Mobile Communication Systems (이동통신 시스템을 위한 소스코더와 결합된 채널코딩방법에 의한 영상전송)

  • In this paper, we present the efficient image transmission system using designed source-channel combined coder in W-CDMA mobile communication system. In proposed schemes, we decompose the wavelet transformed hierarchical band-images into some types of different size blocks which have different properties in error sensitivity. The RS(Reed-Solomon) coder with different coding rate is used for each decomposed source blocks which has different importance. In addition, we combine retransmitted error frames in Truncated Hybrid Type I ARQ. The proposed algorithm shows efficient image transmission methods because it is not much degraded in PSNR compared with the existing not combined source-channel coder in erroneous wireless channel.

  • The educational environment in the digital age of the 21st century definitely affects teaching and learning methods to be changed. In addition, the perceptions and methods of mathematics education in the digital age have also been changing. This study proposes a university mathematics education model suitable for the digital age, which makes full use of the internet/digital environment and leads the students to participate in the learning processes. We apply the proposed model to Linear Algebra course, and present a concrete method of teaching and learning model including evaluation. This will be the first study on how to organize and operate digital courses in Korea in accordance with the mathematics education in the digital era which is rapidly spreading around the world.

  • Based on the Hartenberg-Denavit symbolic equation, which is one of equations for the kinematic analysis of three dimensional (3-D) linkage, a generalized kinematic motion equation is derived utilizing Euler angles and employing the coordinates transformation. The derived equation can feasibly be used for the motion analysis of any type of 3-D linkages as well as 2-D ones. In order to simulate the general motion of 3-D linkgages on digital computer, the generalized equation is programmed through the process of numerical analysis after converting the equation to the type of Newton-Raphson formula and denoting it in matrix form. The feasibility of theoretically derived equation is experimentally proved by comparing the results from the computer with those from experimental setup of three differrent but generally empolyed 3-D linkages.

A Numerical Study on Flow Control Structure of a New-Type Submerged Breakwater (신기능 잠제의 흐름 제어 기능에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • In case of constructing submerged breakwaters, the circulation current is occurred around the open inlet because of mean water level difference between front and rear sides of them. The aim of this study is to investigate the flow control structure of new-type submerged breakwater which is able to reduce mean water level at rear side of it. At first, the numerical model (LES-WASS-3D) is validated by comparing with existing experimental data. And then, numerical simulation is carried out to examine wave height, mean water level and mean flow around the newtype submerged breakwater. From the numerical results, it can be pointed out that the new-type submerged breakwater with drainage system reduces the rip current around the open inlet.

Experimental Verification of Electromagnetic Cloak Based on Quasi-Conformal Mapping (준등각 맵핑 기반 전자기파 투명화 구조의 실험적 검증)

  • A design method is proposed to minimize the scattering cross section(SCS) of the electromagnetic cloak based on the quasi-conformal mapping. Often times in such cloaking structures, parts that require refractive index below one are approximated with free space because of the difficulty involved with realization. In this process, preformance degradation is inevitable. In this work, the size of the cloak is optimized to compensate for the deterioration, and thus to minimize the scattering cross section of a diamond shaped conductor. Proposed cloak is fabricated using a 3D printer, and verified by measuring the cloaking performance of a diamond shaped aluminum target.
