Effects of Stress-coping Styles on Depression in Children from Multi-cultural Families : Focusing on Mediating Effects of Social Support (다문화가정 초등학교 아동의 스트레스 대처양식이 우울에 미치는 영향 -사회적 지지의 매개효과를 중심으로-)

  • The present study aims to investigate the mediating effects of social support in regard of the impacts of stress-coping styles on depression in children from multi-cultural families. In a nutshell, the findings in this study are as follows: First, the stress-coping styles of children from multi-cultural families and depression were found to be negatively related, while social support and depression were negatively correlated. Second, as for the effects of stress-coping styles in children from multi-cultural families on depression, the more passive and active stress-coping styles of children from multi-cultural families, the less their depression, behavior disorder, loss of interest, self-abasement and physical symptoms. Third, high levels of teachers' support partially mediated the relation between stress-coping styles and depression in children from multi-cultural families. This finding implies that children from multi-cultural families, who perceive high levels of peer support, cope with stress better and thus reduce depression.

COPING STYLE, FAMILY SUPPORT, PARENTING BEHAVIOR IN ADOLESCENTS WITH HIGHLY PERCEIVED STRESS (청소년의 높은 스트레스 지각과 대처양식, 가족 내 지지, 부모양육행동 간의 관계)

  • Objectives : This study was intended to compare coping style, family support, and parenting behavior between adolescent groups with different levels of perceived stress. Methods : A total of 795 high school students participated in this study. First, they were tested on the Perceived Stress Scale and then were separated into two groups depending on the level of perceived stress. Both groups completed the Scale for the Coping Style, the Family Environment Scale (relationship subscale) and Parenting Behavior Inventory. Results : The high stress group had significantly higher scores on all their coping scores than the low stress group. Also, the high stress group had significantly higher family conflict scores, lower family cohesiveness scores and lower expression scores than the low stress group. The high stress group experienced negative parenting behavior from both parents more often than the low stress group. In the adolescents with low family cohesiveness and expression, the use of active behavioral coping was decreased, if the higher stressful events occurred. The use of avoidant coping by these adolescents increased when there were higher levels of stress in their environment. Conclusion : Low family support directly reduced the usage of active behavioral coping and increased the use of avoidant coping strategy through the mediation of high stress condition.

  • The bibliotherapy program was carried out in the 'S' elementary school in Kyonggi province. Korea for the fourth grader children in order to measure the grade of stresses which they experience and coping styles. and to find what kind of changes in terms of the grade of stress and coping styles over stress through the bibliotherapy program. Especially, it was going to understand elementary school children's stresses and coping styles, and verify effects of the bibliotherapy program as a device of helping amicable adoption for the various stress which they experience, and they come to experience.

Effect of Verbal Abuse Experience, Coping Style and Resilience on Emotional Response and Stress During Clinical Practicum among Nursing Students (간호대학생의 폭력경험, 대처양식 및 회복탄력성이 정서반응과 임상실습스트레스에 미치는 효과)

  • This study aimed to investigate the effect of verbal abuse experience, coping style and resilience on emotional response and practical stress. 261 nursing students participated in this study. The Data were collected using self-report questionnaires from Dec. 1 to Dec. 20, 2014. We found a positive correlation among verbal abuse experience, emotional coping style and stress during clinical practicum; a positive correlation among problem coping style, emotional coping style and resilience; a positive correlation among emotional coping style, emotional response and stress; a negative correlation among resilience and emotional response; a positive correlation among emotional response and stress during clinical practicum. The highest impact factors affecting the emotional response was emotional coping style(${\beta}=.422$). The highest impact factors affecting stress during clinical practicum was verbal abuse experience(${\beta}=.283$). Future efforts should be focused to provide interpersonal relation training and communication skills training for a safe environment of nursing students.

The experience of stress, coping, and social support of students and parents after the economic crisis: The indigenous psychology approach (IMF시대 이후 초, 중, 고, 대학생과 부모의 스트레스 경험과 대처양식 및 사회적 지원: 토착심리학적 접근)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the experience of stress, coping and social support among students and their parents after Korea recovered from the recent economic crisis. A total of 634 students(primary school=135, junior high school=118, senior high school=168, and university=213) and 842 parents (fathers=421, mothers= 421), for a total of 1,476 participants, completed an open-ended questionnaire developed by the present researchers. For students, the most painful experience was related to problems in academic life, followed by problems in relationship. For father, the most painful experience was financial problems and for mothers, it was conflicts in the family. In stress situations, self-regulation was the most frequently adopted coping style by both students and adults. The second most frequently reported coping style was avoidance. In terms of social support, students reported receiving most support from friends, and the importance of friends became greater for the older students. Parents reported receiving most social support from their spouse. As for the type of social support, around half of students and parents reported receiving emotional support. Emotional support was viewed as being very important in reducing the stress experience related to academic life, problems in relationships, family conflict, and financial difficulties. The results of the present study will be compared to similar studies conducted before and during the economic crisis and the implications of these studies, as well as the importance of the indigenous Korean psychology, will be discussed.

Relationships among Mother's Thinking Styles, Stress Coping Styles, and Child-Rearing Stress (어머니의 사고양식, 스트레스 대처방식과 양육 스트레스와의 관계)

  • This study investigated how mother's thinking styles are represented and researched relationships between their thinking styles, their stress coping styles, and child-rearing stress. Subjects were 254 mothers of children attending child care centers and kindergartens. Instruments were the Thinking Styles Questionnaire Short Version (Sternberg & Wagner, 1991), Parenting Stress Index/Short Form (Abidin, 1990), and the Way of Coping Checklist (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) Data were analyzed by MANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and regression. Results showed more educated mothers had legislative and internal thinking styles, and mothers employed outside the home had hierarchical, internal, and liberal thinking styles. Varieties of maternal thinking styles were related to parental distress, to parent-child dysfunctional interaction and to child's difficult temperament.

Cultural and psychological adjustment and stress coping strategies: North Korean refugees in South Korean cultures (이(異)문화권내 적응과 스트레스 대처양식: 북한이탈주민 남한문화 적응의 관점에서)

  • The present research investigated and compared stress coping strategies of North Korean refugees with those of South Koreans in the purpose to predict and prepare psychological conflicts expected to occur during the Korean reunification. Adapted from Han, Hur, Chae, and Kim(2001), North Korean refugees recorded their coping strategies that they would employ in stressful situations varying in term of three aspects of stress causes - 2(locus: internal/external) × 2(stability: temporal/enduring) × 2(context: individual/interpersonal) - and the responses were classified in terms of three dimensions(active/passive, approach/avoidance, cognitive/affective/behavioral). In the temporal stress situations, adaptive North Korean refugees preferred active over passive, approaching over avoiding, and behavioral over cognitive/affective stress coping strategies more than maladaptive North Korean refugees did. Also, in the stressful situations caused by external causes, they were more likely to take active rather than passive, approaching rather than avoiding copying. Although active copying strategies were preferred to passive ones by adaptive North Korean refugees in individual stressful situations, approaching copying strategies were preferred to avoiding ones by them in interpersonal stressful situations. These findings were found to be different from the pattern of South Korean's stress coping strategies in the same situations. In conclusion, the differences were discussed in the view of psychological integration during Korean reunification.

A study on the Stress Management & Ego identity of female middle school students according to Their Graphic types (여중생의 도형 심리 유형에 따른 스트레스 대처와 자아 정체성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of stress management & ego identity in female middle school students according to their graphic types. In this study, 507 students who lived in major city were asked to draw a graphic type and fill out a questionnaire of stress management& ego identity. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA & t-test with SPSS WIN 18.0. O(round type) consisted of 60% and was significantly high score(p=.041) in "self-acception". ${\triangle}$(triangle type) was significantly using "self-reproach" & "deviant behavior" in stress management types(p=.025, p=.017). The higher ego identity score, extrovert personality, they had significantly using positive stress management. The study findings suggest that graphic type test require variant group and find a way to establish ego identity in middle school students.

  • The purpose of research is to investigate mediating effect of stress management on influence over post traumatic stress disorder with traumatic case experience. In order to investigate, police officers from 4 police stations in Jeju were selected as subjects, 297 police officers. Data processing analysis of the research was verified by going through Baron & Kenny's regression analysis in 4 phases and Sobel Test was done to verify significance level on mediation effect. Through the research by confirming the manifestation route of post traumatic stress disorder symptom after traumatic case experience, assisted in setting up of appropriate post traumatic stress disorder intervention program and the purpose of research is to ultimately help police officers to break free from post traumatic stress and establish positive and dynamic work environment.

The Relationships between Loss Experiences and Depression of the Men and Women Elderly: Focused on the Moderating Effects of Stress Coping Styles (남녀노인의 상실경험과 우울간의 관계: 스트레스 대처양식의 조절효과)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the moderating effect of stress coping styles on the relationships between loss experiences and depression of the men and women elderly. Method: The subjects of the study were 116 men and 156 women aged over 60 years. For the data analysis, frequency, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$. Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression were used. Results: The main results were as follows: First, elderly men reported higher role loss experience, relation loss experience, and problem-focused coping styles than elderly women. Also elderly women reported higher bereavement experience than elderly men. Second, there were main effects of health loss experience, economy loss experience, role loss experience, relation loss experience, problem-focused coping style, and emotion-focused coping style on depression of elderly men and women. Third, problem-focused coping styles moderated the relationships between physical health loss experience, economy loss experience, role loss experience and depression in the elderly men group. Last, social support-seeks coping styles moderated the relationships between economy loss experience and depression in the elderly women group. Conclusions: These results were discussed in terms of educational programs related stress coping strategies for the elderly.
