Radium isotopes were measured together with oceanographical parameters in the southern coastal region of the Korean East Sea during the period of September $2{\sim}8$, 1991. In September, there were various water masses vertically distributed in this region due to formation of strongly seasonal thermoclines. These water masses were characterized by activity of radium isotopes as well as water temperature and dissolved oxygen. Among the water masses, Japan Sea Proper Water(JSPW) below $1^{\circ}C$ had the highest Ra-226 activities but the lowest Ra-228 concentrations. However, Tsushima Surface Water (TSW) above $20^{\circ}C$ in water temperature had the highest Ra-228 which decreased sharply with depth. In TSW, Ra-228 activities were in the range of $194{\sim}270$ dpm/kl, which were approximately 10 times higher than JSPW. Activity ratios(A.R's) of Ra-228/Ra-226 were $1.9{\sim}2.6$ for TSW, $0.7{\sim}1.1$ for Tsushima Middle Water(TMW) of $12{\sim}17^{\circ}C\;to\;0.4{\sim}0.7$ for North Korea Cold Water(NKCW) with $1{\sim}7^{\circ}C$ and below 0.2 for JSPW. The Ra-228/Ra-226 ranged from 0.6 to 0.9 in the cold waters of $2{\sim}6^{\circ}C$, which were observed at depth of $65{\sim}120\;m$ in this study area. Radium isotopes provided a useful means of identifying origins of the cold water which occurred annually at intermediate or bottom layers in the southern coastal zone of the Korean East Sea. By plotting radium isotopes against water temperature, it could be observed clearly that the cold waters between $2{\sim}6^{\circ}C$ did not originate from the mixed water of JSPW and TMW but from NKCW.
The mass mortality of Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli that occured at the fish farms in Tongyeong and Geoje City regions between late August and early September in 2006 was investigated. Sixty two fish showed no significant external symptoms except ulcerative lesions with reddish foci on the skin. From the internal observations and diagnosis results, some yellowish brown liver, intestine bleeding, atrophy and congestion in the abdominal cavity of the fish were found. In the gill, swelled filaments caused by foreign material accumulation and mucus secretion were observed. However, the main cause of the fish mass mortality in both sampling regions could be due to physiological weakness induced by significant change of water temperature causing by typhoon Wookong during the summer in 2006.

In Southern Sea of Korea, there are upwelling area where artificial seamount were built and the environment variations (temperature, salinity, nutrient and current) of before and after built seamount were observed between 2002 and 2007. In 2002, before the seamount was built, there had stratification at 20-30m. And in 2007, seamount was built, stratification of the seamount at the front and back of it were changed by 10-40 m and 20-30 m, respectively. To know the reason of this results, we used temperature and salinity using Brunt-Vaisala Frequency and horizontal current using vertical shear and relative vorticity. They showed upwelling was mainly reason that changed the ocean environment.

We examined the effect of warm temperature on the survival of larvae of walleye pollock and on their swimming behavior during the four days of post-hatch. Observations were conducted on larvae in Petri dishes and in 85 cm tall, cylindrical tanks that had a warmer upper layer and cooler lower layer separated by a small thermocline. Mortality was carried out in four temperature ranges from $3.1^{\circ}C$ to $9.7^{\circ}C$. The number of days to 50 % mortality ($D_{50}$) was longest (18.7 days) at $3.1^{\circ}C$ and decreased with increasing temperature to 10.3 days at $9.7^{\circ}C$. And $D_{50}$ were similar level to that at temperature 3.1 and $5.1^{\circ}C$(17.9 days). Larval responses to warmer temperatures varied depending on developmental stages. 2dph larvae changed the distribution to the thermocline of the water column. And, 3dph larvae had a ability for escaping from the unfavourable warmer temperature. These results suggest that the warmer water negatively affects the larval survival.

As hypoxia adversely affects the marine environment in northwestern Gamak Bay every summer, the present study determined its comprehensive occurrence mechanisms using the Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA) and suggested management directions based on the primary MRA factors. The first hypoxia occurred by thermocline related to weather conditions, with organic matter deposited inside the bay on 26th June, 2017. Additionally, on 12th July, halocline was also developed by increased rainfall, and the hypoxia was most expanded horizontally and vertically. The primary factors were the stratification and deposited organic matter. In contrast, the hypoxia correlated to phytoplankton growth and deposited organic matter on 8th August was diminished with remarkably less precipitation. However, the stable halocline was caused by massive precipitation, and the reproduced phytoplankton re-generated the expanded hypoxia on 16th August despite a short sampling interval. Subsequently, the hypoxia influenced by the deposited organic matter spread shallowly along the seafloor on 13th September as the extinction period. These results suggest that stratification alleviation technologies, and the improvement and removal of the organic matter deposited on the surface sediment are necessary.

This study was determined to analysis the characteristics of water mass in the Bottol Bada, Yeosu in August, 2010 based on the data from the distribution of water temperature and salinity. Sampling was carried out a total of three times (i.e. July 29, August 13, and August 30, 2010) and performed at three stations. Observation was done during the period of time 10:00-15:00, indicating the decreasing tidal height and turn of tide. In July 29, thermocline was found at 4 m in St. 1, but the stratification did not observe in August 13 and August 30. The remarkable water temperature between surface and bottom was found in St. 2 and St. 3, whereas St. 1 did not find. A particular finding during this study showed a cold water mass at bottom layer from St. 2 and St. 3, which was first occurred in July 29 and persisted in August 30 without any of destruction. Water temperature had a remarkable fluctuation between surface and bottom, whereas salinity had a unique in St. 1. St. 2 and St. 3 showed the increasing salinity according to water depth in August 13 and August 30. Transparency had considerable fluctuations in St. 1 and St. 3 depending to sampling date, but St. 2 did not fluctuate. Consequently, the Bottol Bada had a significantly different water mass between inner and outer waters. Furthermore, strong irradiance and weak wind play an important role in developing the stratification between surface and bottom, in particular the introduction of offshore waters contribute to highly developing the stratification in the Bottol Bada during the period of August in 2010.
Temperature inversions are investigated by using the oceanographic data (1965-1979) obtained in the Southern Sea of Korea. The temperature inversions in winter occur about six times more frequently than those in sumner. In the west region of the Southern Sea, the inversions are found at any depth in winter. In the east region of the Southern Sea, however, they usually appear in surface layer in winter. Such inversion phenomena in winter can be explained by surface cooling effects associated with a net heat loss at the sea surface and a southward advection of surface cold water due to north-westerly monsoon. In summer the inversion layers are usually formed below the thermocline in the west region of the Southern Sea, and in surface layer in the east region. The former results from the mixing between the Tsushima Warm Current and the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water, and the latter is generated by an offshore flow of cold water near coast due to southwesterly wind.

Typhoon and neap tide on Cochlodinium polykrikoides bloom and water temperature on disappearance of C. polykrikoides bloom were investigated to elucidate the outbreak mechanism of C. polykrikoides blooms at Naro and Namhae coastal area in South Sea of Korea. The first observation of C. polykrikoides blooms were observed when thermocline was disappeared by typhoon, tide, etc. The first blooms of C. polykrikoides were observed on neap tide or before one day from neap tide in 1996-1998 and 2000. However, thermocline was disappeared by typhoon in 1994 and 1999, the first blooms were observed early 12-30 day than 1996-1998 and 2000. The main reason of disappearance of C. polykrikoides blooms after typhoon on 1997-2000 seems to be other environmental change by typhoon rather than low water temperature. In the future, the first C. polykrikoides bloom will be appear around the first neap tide of latter part of August with breaking down of thermocline, but if the thermocline be collapsed by typhoon in July, the C. polykrikoides bloom will be appear at beginning of August. The outbreak of C. polykrikoides blooms will be explain as follows: The vegetative cells, which was germinated by environmental change or already exist in surface water at low level, input to the surface water, and then nutrients and trace metals which were suppled from out side of C. polykrikoides bloom area inflow to surface. The vegetative cells are growth by the nutrients and trace metals at suitable environmental conditions e.g. water temperature, salinity, and sufficient light.

The primary goal of this study is to determine the distribution characteristics using a scientific echo sounder in the Yellow Sea west of South Korea. The survey was carried out between 33$^{\circ}$00'N~37$^{\circ}$00'N latitude and 124$^{\circ}$00'E~126$^{\circ}$00'E longitude during the months of May and August, 1999 and April, 2000. The ships used in this survey were the R/V Chung-kyeong(G/T 300) and R/V Dong-baek(G/T 1,050) of Yeosu National University. The results obtained are as follows : 1. From the oceanographic data the Yellow Sea were divided into three sea areas which were the western waters of Chejudo, Mokpo and Kunsan. The oceanographic conditions were different in each of these three areas and the western waters of Chejudo were higher about 1~5$^{\circ}C$ more than the western waters of Gunsan. Generally, thermoclines were presented clearly in all three areas, but more so in August than in May according to seasons. 2. The horizontal distribution of S$_{A}$(area backscattering coefficient per unit area) value is that the western sea waters of Chejudo area are higher than that of the western sea waters of Mokpo and Gunsan. 3. The vortical distribution of S$_{A}$ value varies with thermocline that the harder thermocline is, the higher the S$_{A}$ value is. 4. The S$_{A}$ values on the types of biomass distribution are different with frequency. At the 38kHz, the demersal schools have higher values than the pelagic schools. At the 120kHz, the pelagic schools have higher values than the demersal schools.
