  • We optimized the Si(substrate)/$SiO_2$(cladding)/$Si_3N_4$(antiresonant cladding)/$SiO_2$(core)/air multi-layers rib-optical waveguides of antiresonant reflecting optical waveguide (ARROW) for integrated optical biosensor structure utilizing beam propagation method (BPM). Thickness of anti-resonant cladding was derived to minimize the propagation loss and leaky field mode deeply related with evanescent mode was theoretically derived. Depth, width, refractive index and cladding thickness of anti-resonant cladding were numerically calculated into 2.3${\mu}m$, 5${\mu}m$, 1.488, and 0.11${\mu}m$ respectively to minimize propagation loss using the BPM simulation tool. Finally one- and two-dimensional propagation characteristics of ARROW was confirmed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the structural performance of doubly reinforced composite beams with steel fiber concretes and steel angles. For this purpose, total 6 specimens whose variables are shear span-to-depth ratio, existence of shear reinforcement, and shear reinforcement details, are made and tested. All specimens are constructed of steel fiber concretes with specified compressive strength of 30 MPa and steel fiber volumn content of 1%. From the experimental results, structural performance of doubly reinforced composite beams are evaluated in terms of strength, stiffness, ductility, and energy absorbing capacity. For the better structural performance, it is recommended that the composite beam is designed with diagonal shear reinforcement.

  • In this study, in order to observe the behaviors of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthened and steel fiber reinforced concrete specimens for impact and static loads, flexural and punching tests were performed. For the one-way flexural and two-way punching tests, concrete specimens with the dimensions of $50{\times}100{\times}350$ mm and $50{\times}350{\times}350$ mm were fabricated, respectively. The steel fiber reinforced concrete specimens showed much enhanced resistance on two-way punching of static and impact loads. In addition the FRP strengthening system provided the outstanding performance under a punching load. Because of a large tensile strength and toughness of ultra high performance concrete (UHPC), the UHPC specimens retrofitted with FRP showed marginally enhanced strength and energy dissipating capacity.

  • This paper is a basic study to evaluate the possibility of earthquake-resistant reinforcement by reinforcing engineered cementitious composite in masonry members. In order to examine the performance according to the fiber mixing rate of the engineered cementitious composite, a test specimen was prepared according to the formulation design, and flow ability, compressive strength, flexural strength, length change rate, and direct tensile strain were measured. In addition, non-reinforced masonry members, masonry members reinforced with engineered cementitious composite, and masonry members in which glass fibers and wire mesh were separately reinforced with engineered cementitious composites were manufactured, and flexural strength and maximum displacement were measured. All specimens reinforced with engineered cementitious composite showed more than 16 times the effect of maximal strength compared to that of no reinforcement, and as a result of examining the crack shape, the energy dissipation ability was excellent, confirming the possibility of seismic reinforcement.

  • Among the seismic structures for reducing earthquake damage, the seismic control structure is a technology that can efficiently improve seismic performance and secure economic feasibility by simply applying a damper. However, existing dampers have limitations in terms of durability due to required seismic performance and material plasticity. In this study, we proposed a polyurethane damper with enhanced recovery characteristics by applying precompression to polyurethane, which basically shows elastic characteristics, and applying superelastic shape memory alloy (SSMA). To verify the characteristics of the polyurethane damper, the concept was first established, and the design details were completed by selecting SSMA and steel, and selecting the precompression size as design variables. In addition, structural tests were conducted to derive response behavior and analyze force resistance performance, residual displacement, recovery rate, and energy dissipation capacity. As a result of the analysis, the polyurethane damper showed that various performances improved when the SSMA wire was applied and the precompression increased.

  • The hysteretic behavior of steel structure under cyclic and dynami loading such as earthquake is different to that under static loading. Because structural steels on dynamic deformation is different to static deformation with respect with mechanical characteristics and stress-strain relationship. Therefore, to accurately predict the hysteretic behavior of steel structures such as circular steel columns under cyclic and dynamic loading, the difference of loading carrying capacity and deformation according to loading rate, assumed static and dynamic deformation state, must be investigated. In this study, numerical analyses of circular steel column using SM490 for change of loading rate and diameter-thickness ratio(D/t) were carried out by using three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analysis and dynamic cyclic plasticity model of SM490 developed by the authors. Characteristics of hysteretic behavior of circular steel column using SM490, load carrying capacity and energy dissipation ratio, were clarified by analysis results.

  • This study deals with the response of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets. Test beams are subjected to static loading and repeated loading. Based on the static test results of the RC beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets, repeated loading tests are performed. The variables of repeated loading test are composed of the number of carbon fiber sheets, the existence of U-shaped band at the end for anchoring, and loading rate of repeated loading, etc. Test results show the flexural behavior, the characteristics of strength, the characteristics of ductility, the change of flexural rigidity, and the amount of energy loss of RC beams under monotonic incremental loading and repeated loading. The failure strain of carbon fiber sheets is also estimated under repeated loading. From the experimental results, this work presents a basis of the data needed to analyze and design the static and dynamic flexural response of RC beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets.

  • Volcanic ash (VA) can be estimated by remote sensing sensors through their spectral signatures determined by the inherent optical property (IOP) including complex refractive index and the scattering properties. Until now, a very limited range of VA refractive indices has been reported and the VA from each volcanic eruption has a different composition. To improve the robustness of VA remote sensing, there is a need to understanding of VA - radiation interactions. In this study, we calculated extinction coefficient, scattering phase function, asymmetry factor, and single scattering albedo which show different values between andesite and pumice. Then, IOPs were used to analyze the relationship between theoretical remote sensed radiation calculated by radiative transfer model under various aerosol optical thickness (${\tau}$) and sun-sensor geometries and characteristics of VA. It was found that the mean rate of change of radiance at top of atmosphere versus ${\tau}$ is six times larger than in radiance values at 0.55 ${\mu}m$. At the surface, positive correlation dominates when ${\tau}$ <1, but negative correlation dominates when ${\tau}$ >1. However, radiance differences between andesite and pumice at 11 ${\mu}m$ are very small. These differences between two VA types are expressed as the polynomial regression functions and that increase as VA optical thickness increases. Finally, these results would allow VA to be better characterized by remote sensing sensors.

  • This study was programmed to fabricate a beam-to-column connection that is limited to a steel-welded moment connection with full-scale members, using SN steel. A cyclic seismic test was conducted of the nine specimens that were fabricated by choosing the test variable for the weld access hole geometry, connection design method, and RBS. From the test results, failure modes, the moment-drift behavior, and the strain distribution were provided. From the specimen material properties, the beam's nominal plastic flexural capacity and classified qualified connection as a special moment flame were calculated. By analyzing the skeleton part and the baushinger part, a range of strength-raising effects, and deformation ratios were provided, with which the seismic performance of the specimens were evaluated. The test results showed that the specimens eliminated their weld access holes that demonstrated higher seismic performance than the specimens' existing weld access holes, and that the WUF-W connection that was reinforced by the supplemental fillet weld around the shear tap that was fastened by five bolts demonstrated superior seismic performance.
