The Development of Rail-Transport Operation Control based on Unsaturated Soil Mechanics Concept (불포화토이론을 이용한 강우시 열차운전규제기준 개발)

  • Infiltration of rainfall causes railway embankment to be unstable and may result in failure. Basic relationship between the rainfall and stability of railway embankment is defined to analyze the stability of embankment by rainfall. An experimental study for defining of infiltration rate of rainfall into slope is conducted in the lab. The results of Rainfall Infiltration show that rainfall Infiltration is not equal to infiltration as like reservoir because rate of rainfall infiltration is controlled by slope angle. Based on these results, boundary condition of rainfall is altered and various numerical analysis are performed. The variation of shear strength, the degree of saturation and pore-water pressure for railway slope during rainfall can be predicted and the safety factor of railway slope can be expressed as the function of rainfall amount, namely rainfall index. Therefore, it is judged that this rainfall index can be a good tool for the rail-transport operation control.

Evaluation and Prediction of Failure Factors by Quantification Theory(II) on Banking Slopes in Forest Road (수량화(數量化)II류(類)에 의한 임도(林道) 성토사면(盛土斜面)의 붕괴요인(崩壞要人) 평가 (評價) 및 예측(豫測))

  • On the basis of data obtained from five forest roads collapsed due to a heavy rainfall of 1995 in Chunchon, Kangwon-do, this study was carried out to evaluate and predict the fill slope failure of forest roads with four factors of forest road structure and those of location condition by using Quantification theory(II). The results were summarized as follows ; In the structure factors of forest road, the fill slope failure was mainly occurred in longitudinal gradients less than $2^{\circ}$ or more than $4^{\circ}$, distance of surface-flow longer than 80m, fill slope length greater than 6m, and fill slope gradients steeper than $35^{\circ}$. In the factors of location condition, the failure was mainly occurred in ridge portion of road position, weathered rock and soft rock of constituent material, slope gradients in the range from $35^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}$, and concave and convex of longitudinal slope forms. The priority order for factors influencing on fill slope failure was ranked by fill slope length, constituent material, road position, and so on. And the rate of correct discrimination by analysis of fill slope failure was estimated at the high prediction of 86.5%.

Experimental Evaluation of the Moment Capacity of a Railway Electric Pole Foundation Adjacent to a Fill Slope (실물 재하시험을 통한 성토사면에 근접한 철도 전철주기초의 저항모멘트 평가)

  • The moment responses of electric pole foundations for a railway were investigated using real-scale load tests. Large overturning moments were applied to two circular rigid piles with a 0.75 m diameter and a 2.5 m embedded depth; the circular rigid piles were installed in an actual railway embankment fill. Two different loading directions-toward the fill slope and toward the track -were applied to evaluate the influence of the fill slope on the moment capacities of the foundations. It was found that the failure of the foundations that were constructed according to Korean railway practices exhibited a sudden overturning pattern without any significant pre-failure displacement. The moment capacity toward the fill slope was less than the moment capacity toward the track by 30%. From the test results, the geometry factor (K), which accounted for the reduction of the moment capacity, due to the fill slope, was 0.7. Moment capacities determined from the load tests were compared with those predicted from three existing design methods, and their applicability was discussed.

A Study on Filter Performance of Materials in Embankment Slope during Heavy Rain (강우시 성토사면 재료의 필터조건검토에 대한 연구)

  • This paper presents the characteristics of internal erosion of embankment slopes due to the localized heavy rain. In this study, the existing analysis methods of filter performance in embankment materials were reviewed. Based on the theoretical concept of filter conditions to prevent particles from being carried in from the adjacent embankment materials, new analysis method was suggested. According to the new analysis method for filter performance, experimental programs were carried out to investigate the filter performance for controlling and sealing any leak which develops through the embankment materials as a result of internal erosion. Three sets of small scale laboratory tests were carried out with changing the main influence factors such as rainfall intensity, gradient of slope, embankment material condition. It was found that the new analysis method for filter performance to prevent particles from being carried in from the adjacent embankment materials was more capable approach to design the filter materials in embankment slopes. The new criterion or method for satisfactory filter performance, therefore, was recommended.

Proposal of stability standards for slopes reclaimed by soils mixed with stone dust (석분슬러지 혼합토 매립사면에 대한 안정성 기준 제안)

  • In this paper, the stability standards of slopes reclaimed by soils mixed with stone dust were proposed to manage the stone dust as recovery soils. First of all, the mixed ratio between stone dust and natural soil is classified into 5 groups, and a series of soil test was performed in each group. As the results of tests, the shear strength and the maximum dry unit weight were increased in decrease of the mixed ratio of stone dust. On the basis of the investigation to the safety factor standards of embankment slopes in and outside the country, a slope stability rank of slopes reclaimed by mixed soils were divided into 3 stages such as unstable stage, attention stage and stable stage. The slope angle, the slope height and the mixed ratio with stone dust were proposed by the result of stability analysis of slopes reclaimed by mixed soils. As the result of slope stability analysis, the slope angle of 1 : 1.8 at the reclaimed slope should be constructed in case of the slope height of 10 m. Also, the slope angle of 1 : 1.8 and the mixed ratio of stone dust less than 50% should be constructed in case of the slope height of 15 m. The analysis result of reclaimed slope constructed inside the quarry is similar to that of reclaimed slope constructed on the open ground in same conditions of the slope angle, the slope height and the mixed ratio with stone dust. The proposed stability standards of slopes reclaimed by soils mixed with stone dust can be used practically at the quarrying site.

  • Generally, when the stability of the geosynthetic reinforced soil slopes is analyzed, the required tensile forces of each reinforcement layers are calculated from total reinforcement forces which are necessary to retain the equilibrium state of slip mass in which the slip surfaces are assumed to be a linear or bilinear. It is assumed that the reinforcement forces are increased or constant with depth. However, according to the instrumented field data and laboratory model test results, the maximum tensile strain of reinforcement in a reinforced soil slope is developed in a certain elevation, not a bottom of the slope. In the concept of reinforced soil, postulated failure surfaces are the traces of the position in which the reinforcement tensile forces are maximum in the layer, and the reinforcement tensile forces are related to the stress state on the postulated failure surface. Therefore, in this study, based on the distribution of normal stress on the slip surface, a new method for the evaluation of required tensile forces is suggested and a number of the instrumented field data are analyzed by newly suggested method. As a result, it is shown that the newly suggested method produces relatively accurate reinforcement tension forces.

  • 사면은 인공적 또는 자연적인 현상에 의하여 발생된 경사진 지반을 말하며, 그 안정성은 작용외력과 지반상태 및 지하수 등에 의하여 영향을 받는다. 사면의 파괴는 여러 가지 형태로 일어날 수 있으나 대체로 강성 활동 파괴체가 소성화된 국부적인 지반을 따라서 발생되고, 사면의 파괴형상은 경계조건과 지반상태가 단순할 경우에만 쉽게 예측할 수 있으며, 복잡한 지반상태에서는 많은 노력과 비용을 들여서 정밀하게 조사해야만 어느 정도 실제와 근사하게 예측할 수 있다. 자연 또는 인공사면에서 지질 및 지반상태, 지하수 상태, 사면의 형상, 사면의 규모, 외력의 작용상태 등의 조건을 분석하여 사면파괴를 일으킬 수 있는 원인들을 찾아내어 적합한 안정화대책을 마련하는 방안을 모색한다. 특히 사면을 성토사면, 절토사면, 암절사면, 대절토사면으로 구분하여 사면파괴 원인과 안정화대책에 대해서 심도 있게 검토한다. 사면의 설계 및 안정검토를 위하여 일반적으로 적용하고 있는 사면안정 검토 방법들에 대해서 이론전개 과정에서 발생되는 문제점들과 이들이 결과에 미치는 영향에 대해서 언급한다. 그리고 사면을 안정시키기 위하여 일상적으로 적용하는 대책공법들의 적용성을 사면파괴 원인과 연계해서 판정하는 방안을 검토한다.

A Study on Influence of Constructed Bridge Abutment in Landfill Slope under Laterally Displacing (측방유동 발생 시 성토사면에 시공된 교대의 영향에 대한 연구)

  • The damage caused by lateral movement occurs frequently on site where abutment or retaining wall was built on soft ground along with embankment behind and the study on stability of abutment against lateral movement has been mostly focused on soft ground. However lateral movement occurs not only on soft ground but also on embankment slope which causes the impact on structure. The bridges built in Korea are mostly on mountainous area than soft ground. This study is intended to analyze the ground behavior resulting from lateral movement using finite element analysis method to the section as well as propose the basic data for abutment design on embankment slope through the analysis of the outcome of reinforcement method. As a result, when it comes to the reinforcement with soil surcharge and stabilized pile in slope, lateral movement was reduced by 4~30% and displacement on bearing shoe on abutment was reduced by 2~13%. On the contrary, when reinforced with EPS, lateral float was reduced by 97% and maximum horizontal displacement of bearing shoe on abutment was reduced by 95%. Thus, it's necessary to identify the design technique which is applicable to domestic condition through additional tests and more reliable study using numerical analysis and comparing the measured values shall follow.

A Study on Replacement Behaviour of Soft Soil by Centrifuge Modelling Test (원심모형시험을 통한 연약지반의 강제치환거동 연구)

  • 본 연구에서는 토사나 사석을 이용하여 자체를 축조하는 과정에서 발생하는 연약지반의 강제치환거동을 연구하기 위하여 다양한 시험조건에 대한 원심모셩을 수행하였다. 제체축조에 따른 연약지반의 강제치환거동은 제체의 성토시공방법, 성토재의 입경, 연약지반의 종류와 강도 등에 따라 맣은 차이를 보였는데, 특히 성토과정 중에 발생하는 과잉간극수압의 크기와 밀접한 상관관계를 보였다. 급속시공인 경우에 연약지반의 파괴영역은 회적으로 확대되고 성토사면의 기울기는 완만해졌으며, 성토재의 입경이 클수록 치환깊이가 증가하고 성토사면의 기울기가 급하게 형성되었다. 그리고 동일점토에서는 지반의 강도가 클수록 치환량이 적었지만, 점토의 종류가 다른 경우에는 지반내 발생하는 과잉간극수압의 크기와 소산성조에따라 치환거동이 많은 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다.

A Fundamental Study on Reinforced Soil Slope with Improved Soil Facing (개량토 벽면공을 활용한 보강성토사면에 관한 기초적 연구)

  • This paper presents the slope wall technique using soil improvement material for reinforced soil slope through laboratory scale model tests, and verifies the experimental results comparing with numerical analysis. In additional, case study in field has performed to investigate the deformation of reinforced soil slope for 6 months. As a result of laboratory scale model test, numerical analysis, and case study, the reinforcement effect of the slope wall technique using soil improvement material is sufficient to be constructed as reinforced soil slope. The technique shows the stable ratio (0.4%) of horizontal to vertical deformation in the surface loading.
