  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of nursing students' self-reflection and insight, and academic selfefficacy on their clinical reasoning competence. Methods: Data were collected from 147 third- and fourth-year nursing students who had more than 6 months of clinical training experience. Clinical reasoning competence, self-reflection and insight, and academic self-efficacy were measured using self-reported questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted with IBM SPSS 25.0 using one-way ANOVA, independent t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results: Clinical reasoning competence was positively correlated with self-reflection and insight (r=.24, p=.003) and academic self-efficacy (r=.30, p<.001). Academic self-efficacy (β=.23, p=.011), dissatisfaction with major (β=-.17, p=.034), and 5~8 case studies (β=-.39, p=.027) were identified as factors influencing clinical reasoning competence (adjusted R2=.15). Conclusion: To improve the clinical reasoning competence of nursing students, it is necessary to develop the academic self-efficacy of complex cases and provide critical inquiries, debriefing tailored to clinical reasoning, and sufficient reflection during clinical and simulation practice.

  • The purpose of this study is to categorize and analyze the communication competency of engineering undergraduates and to develop educational content in order to improve that. In this study, communication competency of engineering undergraduates was categorized into three areas: critical thinking, scientific communication, and media literacy. As a means to improve communication competency, the experience with and perception of writing were investigated. The communication competency of undergraduates needs to be improved overall. There is a high need for writing programs that enhance critical thinking oriented around practice. It suggests flipped learning based on smart education, E-community, problem-solving programs based on action learning, cooperative learning programs, reflection journals & portfolio, and collaborative writing programs as educational content. The results of this study can be used as basic data to design competency-based communication curriculum and practical applications for engineering undergraduates.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the nature of the cultural competence of the staff in Saeil Center, which supports the self-reliance of immigrant women by marriage, and to find ways to improve their cultural competence. The assumption is that the higher cultural competence of the staff enhances the quality of their job training for immigrant women by marriage. I conducted the study from June to September, 2017, and in-depth interviewed the staffs from seven Saeil Centers across the country, who had been involved in the job training for immigrant women by marriage for at least three years. The interview data elicited 60 meaningful statements, 27 themes, and 11 thematic units, and I discussed, based on the findings, 1) the low level of contemplation of the staffs on the issues related to immigrant women 2) their limitations of friendly communication and altruistic stance 3) their own conscience of main stream and 4) insufficient cultural competence of the staffs as well as in terms of the organizational operation. Finally, I suggested the necessity of educational programs, and also emphasized the importance of developing multiculturalism in the centers.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate learners' satisfaction with operating Problem-Based Learning (PBL), competency level for dental hygiene, and learners' opinions through a reflection journal by developing a PBL class module and applying it to clinical dental hygiene classes. Methods: The subjects of the study were 31 students in the Clinical Dental Hygiene (oral health management for special patients) course in the second semester of the fourth grade. This study was conducted over the first semester from September to December 2020. The developed PBL learning module was applied for the 15 weeks class, and after all PBL classes were over, the overall satisfaction with the class and the change in student competency level was evaluated. Results: The overall satisfaction of learners with PBL was high, and the level of self-competence also increased compared to before class. In addition, the top three topics (Competencies learned through PBL, humanistic and sociological elements learned through PBL, and obstacles in the PBL) were derived through the reflection journal after PBL learning activities. Conclusions: It was confirmed that the PBL learning module developed in this study is a class that enables students to identify problems and solve them integrally and drives the improvement of humanities and sociological competencies.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the social workers' reflections developed during the participatory action research seeking practice methods in the community welfare center single parent self-help groups. Nine social workers and researchers sharing difficulties in the community welfare center single parent self-help group practice were involved in the participatory action research. We performed a circulatory research repeating 'plan-action-reflection-replan' cycles through ten sessions of research meetings including peer supervision in parallel with 4 self-help group practices. Multiple practice methods were derived as the result among which change in the social workers' perception was the key. We focused on the result that the social workers' perception was changed by reflections from participatory action research and the contents of the reflections were qualitatively analyzed using materials acquired during the study. As a result the following 5 themes were derived; 'recognition and worry on the lack of appropriate practice for the self-help group', 'specification of the social workers' role based on the changed perspective on the member-social worker relation', 'confirmation of the possibility of the concerned person initiated practice', 'detailed understanding of the single parent self-help group in the community welfare center', and 'renewed recognition of the development of the single parent self-help group in the community welfare center'. Based on these results, empowerment and reflection/reflective practice for single parent self-help group in the community welfare center were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the competence needed to be possessed by multicultural mentors, and offer an education program for the competence development of mentors. From June to September of the year 2016 in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 mentors who have participated in multicultural mentoring for over a year concentrating on the result of their participation in the mentoring. The interview contents were transcribed, then analyzed into learning competence, psychological competence, social competence as well as cultural competence. The result of the analysis is as follows. First, the learning competence needed for mentors are intellectual capability and teaching skills needed when teaching mentors. Second, the psychological competence consists of the attitude of attentively listening to mentees and advising them. Third, the social competence is conversation skills, communication techniques and leadership. Fourth, the cultural competence consists of recognizing diversity and the ability to manage the mentee's situation. Based on the analysis of this result, educational plans for enhancing mentor's capacity are as follows: First, education for mentors is necessary before they will begin mentoring. Second, it is necessary to provide a place for mentors' self-reflection. Third, it is for mentors to receive regular counseling. This study will become a basic research to reinforce the effectiveness of mentoring and reconsider the importance of mentor's capacity.

  • This study explores pre-service secondary mathematics teachers (PSTs)' noticing competency. 17 PSTs participated in this study as a part of the mathematics teaching method class. Individual PST's essays regarding the question 'what effective mathematics teaching would be?' that they discussed and wrote at the beginning of the course were collected as the first data. PSTs' written analysis of an expert teacher's teaching video, colleague PSTs' demo-teaching video, and own demo-teaching video were also collected and analyzed. Findings showed that most PSTs' noticing level improved as the class progressed and showed a pattern of focusing on each key aspect in terms of the Teaching for Robust Understanding of Mathematics (TRU Math) framework, but their reasoning strategies were somewhat varied. This suggests that the TRU Math framework can support PSTs to improve the competency of 'what to attend' among the noticing components. In addition, the instructional reasoning strategies imply that PSTs' noticing reasoning strategy was mostly related to their interpretation of noticing components, which should be also emphasized in the teacher education program.
