The purpose of this study was to survey vegetation characteristics of Jeopdo (island) for the construction of a database. We installed and analyzed 52 plots with 100㎡ quadrat to investigate the vegetation characteristics. The community classification based on TWINSPAN found seven categories of vegetation communities in the surveyed region: Pinus thunbergii-Pinus densiflora community, Pinus densiflora-Quercus serrata community, Carpinus turczaninowii-Quercus variabilis community, Carpinus turczaninowii-Quercus acutissima community, Quercus variabilis-Carpinus turczaninowii community, Castanopsis sieboldii community, and Actinodaphne lancifolia-Camellia japonica community. The vegetation in Jeopdo is largely composed of evergreen conifer trees community (communities I and II), Carpinus turczaninowii-deciduous broad-leaved trees such as Quercus spp. community (communities III, IV, and V), and evergreen broad-leaved trees community (communities VI and VII). The evergreen conifer tree (Quercus serrata) community is currently competing with Pinus densiflora and Pinus thunbergii. The current state is expected to continue due to the lack of forces, such as Castanopsis sieboldii and Actinodaphne lancifolia, in the succession middle stage and climax stage. The current state of Carpinus turczaninowii-deciduous broad-leaved trees such as Quercus spp. community is expected to last for a long time due to slow vegetation development because of soil conditions. The evergreen broad-leaved trees community is transforming from the initial stage of Pinus densiflora and Pinus thunbergii through the stage in Quercus serrata to Castanopsis sieboldii and Actinodaphne lancifolia. The overall ages of the specimens were similar, and the oldest tree was the 59-year old Castanopsis sieboldii. The correlation analysis of major species showed a high positive correlation between Pinus thunbergii and Eurya japonica, Pinus densiflora and Fraxinus sieboldiana, and Actinodaphne lancifolia and Camellia japonica and a high negative correlation between Pinus densiflora and Carpinus turczaninowii and Carpinus turczaninowii and Eurya japonica.
The flora and vegatation of the Southwest Chuncheon area were investigated from March, 2006 to September, 2007. The vascular plants were summarized as 914 taxa; 111 families, 448 genera, 766 species, 2 subspecies, 119 varieties, and 27 forma. Vegetation phenology is the most important indicator of ecosystem response to climate change. Therefore it is necessary to continuously monitor forest phenology. This paper analyzes the phenological characteristics of forests in South Korea using the MODIS vegetation index with error from clouds or other sources removed using the HANTS algorithm. After using the HANTS algorithm to reduce the noise of the satellite-based vegetation index data, we were able to confirm that phenological transition dates varied strongly with altitudinal gradients. The dates of the start of the growing season, end of the growing season and the length of the growing season were estimated to vary by +0.71day/100m, -1.33day/100m and -2.04day/100m in needleleaf forests, +1.50day/100m, -1.54day/100m and -3.04day/100m in broadleaf forests, +1.39day/100m, -2.04day/100m and -3.43day/100m in mixed forests. We found a linear pattern of variation in response to altitudinal gradients that was related to air temperature. We also found that broadleaf forests are more sensitive to temperature changes compared to needleleaf forests.
1. The analysis of the shoot height growth of Phyllostachys edulis A. et C. Rivi$\acute{e}$re which stand is growing at the middle part of South Korea is presented in the present paper. The shoot height was carefully measured twice a day, 10 am and 4 pm. With this, six hours from 10 am to 4 pm is regarded as day-time-length and 18 hours of the rest as night-length. 2. The measurement were made in 1954. The very young shoots were classed into three diameter groups basing at the ground surface level to see the the afterwards influences of shoot size on height growth. 3. The hourly mean height growth in day time was higher than that in night time. The standard deviations and coefficients of variations of the daily growth of the shoot are presented in Figures 2 and 3 respectively. 4. The hourly mean height growth of the shoot by diameter groups and by day and night period are presented in Fig. 4 and 5 respectively. 5. The growth percentages of the shoot by diameter groups and by day and night is graphed in Fig. 6.

In order to assess th changes in vegetation characteristics over time in the forest-lands which is isolated by urbanization, vegetation surveys based on the Braun-Blanquet phytosociological method was carried out in 1996 and 2015 on Mt. Hwangyeong located in the center of Busan metropolitan city, South Korea. The number of vegetation types based on floristic composition showed no significant changes, the vegetation units under the community levels was more or less represents the difference. the average total vegetation cover and average number of species per unit area ($100m^2$) was increased 16% and 2 species, respectively. The relative importance value (RIV) for each tree species, Quercus spp. like as Q. mongolica and Q. serrata was decreased, while the warmth-tolerant trees, evergreen broad-leaved trees, and mesophyte like Lindera erythrocarpa, Styrax japonica, Osmanthus heterophyllus, and Stephanandra incisa was increased significantly. Changes of the life form spectrums of vascular plants did not substantially, hemicryptophyte(H) and therophyte (Th) was decreased, while nanophanerophyte(N) was increased significantly. Also through the creating of large-scale vegetation map (based on physiognomic vegetation types) was compared the spatial distribution characteristics of each vegetation types.

The habitat suitability is an important factor to estimate the distribution and size of the physical habitat in river. This suitability is also a key factor to decide the ecological flow discharge for the fish. For the ecological analysis in river, accurate values of habitat suitability index for various fishes are necessary. In general, fish habitat is affected by the physical factor of the flow depth and velocity as well as the chemical and biological factors of nutrient and attached algae. Thus, the condition of the fish habitat is expected to be changed with each watershed and tributary. In this study, the habitat suitability indices for fishes were proposed by using the field monitoring data in the rivers of the Han and Geum river watersheds. The proposed indices for three fishes are compared: Zacco platypus, Zacco temminckii, and Coreoleuciscus splendidus. The results show that Zacco platypus has a similar distribution of habitat suitability index in two watersheds. Zacco temminckii and Coreoleuciscus splendidus, however, have different distributions with watersheds. Also, for Zacco platypus, the developed indices at three tributaries of the Han river are compared: Cheng-mi stream, Dal stream, and Hong-cheon stream. The comparision shows that the index in the Cheng-mi stream is different with those in the other rivers. This is expected to be because of a high nutrient concentration at the Cheong-mi stream.
This study was carried out to find out characteristics and contamination status of the urban-forest soils. Both topsoil (0-20 cm) and subsoil (40-60 cm) samples were collected from Namsan, Changdeok-palace, Seongjusan and Odaesan (control). The samples were analyzed for physicochemical properties, heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) and anion $(NO_3\;^-,\;SO_4\;^{2-})$ contents. Soil pH of Odaesan was the highest followed by Namsan, Changdeok-palace and Seongjusan. The anion concentrations of the soil samples were in the order of Namsan, Seongjusan > Changdeok-palace > Odaesan. The relationships between soil pH and the anion concentrations showed highly significant negative correlation, which indicated acidification of soil due to air pollutants such as $NO_3\;^-$ and $SO_4\;^{2-}$ was going on. The heavy metal contents of the soils of urban-forest were higher than those of control. Heavy metal contents in the topsoil were higher than those in the subsoil. Since urban-forest soils were quite vulnerable to acidification and heavy metal accumulation due to chronic exposure to air pollutants such as automobile exhaust, a comprehensive countermeasure not to deteriorate urban-forest ecology must be prepared in the near future.
The objective of this study was to analyze temporal trends of water chemistry and spatial heterogeneity for 13 sampling sites of the Keum River watershed using water quality dataset (obtained from the Ministry of Environment, Korea) during $2001{\sim}2005$. The water quality, based on eight physical and chemical parameters, varied largely depending on the years, seasons, and sampling sites. Seasonal and annual means of conductivity, used as a key indicator for a ionic dilution declined during the monsoon season, and nutrients (TN and TP), based on overall mean of all sites, showed marked declines during the monsoon, compared to those of the premonsoon. In the mean time, BOD and COD had no significant relations with a precipitation, in spite of some differences in the sampling sites. In contrast, major input of SS occurred during the period of summer monsoon. and the variation of TN was similar to that of TP. Spatial trend analyses of all parameters, except for DO and temperature, showed that Site 9 acted as a point source, and thus, water quality at the locations of $S9{\sim}S13$ declined abruptedly over 2 fold, compared to locations of $S1{\sim}S8$. Based on the overall dataset, efficient water quality management in the point source tributary streams is required for better water quality of the main Keum River.

This study was conducted to assay the relationship between the characteristics of watershed and water quality, and to evaluate water quality characteristics of the classified types by TSI deviation analysis with the collected data from 490 reservoir. Relatively shallow depth (<5m) reservoirs out of selected 490 appeared to be eutrophic. The mean TP concentration in reservoirs with the PFA+UFA/watershed area of above 30% was ${\geq}0.1$ mg $L^{-1}$. The mean TN concentration in reservoirs with the PFA/watershed area of above 25% was ${\geq}2.6$ mg $L^{-1}$. Based on the TSI deviation analysis, water quality parameters in TYPE III reservoirs were in high concentration compared to other reservoirs types. Characteristics of Type III generally showed eutrophic, small DA/RA ratio, shallow depth, and large paddy field and upland field to watershed ratio compared to other types of reservoirs. Both water quality and morpho-physical parameters, Type I and II reservoirs were similar with the exceptions of BOD and chi. ${\alpha}$ concentration. Phosphorus in Type I reservoirs was not the primary limiting factor on algal growth, but significant decrease chl. ${\alpha}$ concentration with the increasing TN/TP indicated that phosphorus was the possible secondary limiting factor. Overall results indicated that type of land use, such as PFA and UFA area in watershed, was important parameters for the assessment of water quality characteristics, and phosphorus was limiting nutrient on algal growth in 490 reservoirs.

The population habitat and density of Korean scallops, Chlamys farreri, were investigated to estimate population ecological characteristics from samples randomly collected around Wando from November, 1998 to October, 1999. Age and growth of the Korean scallops were determined from their ring radii. Maturation and spawning were studied using data of ovary maturity stage, gonadosomatic index, and fecundity. Seawater temperature and specific gravity ranged from 7.6 to $25.9^{\circ}C$ and from 1.0188 to 1.0260, respectively. Also dissolved oxygen and pH ranged from 6.48 to 9.50 ppm and from 8.17 to 8.80. Rocky and gravel bottom had a maximum habitat density of $$28.83 inds/100m^2$$ , which accounted for 82.4 % of the overall habitat area. The relationship between shell length (SL, mm) and shell height (SH, mm) of the Korean scallops was fitted : SH=1.021 SL+2.211 $(R^2=0.989)$. The shell length-total weight (TW, g) relationship was $TW=0.0003; SL^{2.837};(R^2=0.980)$. Then von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated from a nonlinear regression method, and the values were as follows : $SH_{\infty}=117.4 mm$K=0.61/year,; and; t_0=-0.017 year., The 50 % maturity at age was 0.21 year with the shell height of 18.3 mm, and spawning occurred twice a year, that is, June/July and October. The relationship between fecundity (Fc) and shell length was$Fc=697.03 SL^{2.683}(R^2=0.984)$, and the fecundity-gonad weight (GW, g) relationship was Fc=10,076,090 GW+15,608,781 $(R^2=0.990)$.
