  • The in-situ Compaction test using sand cone (RC) and Plate Bearing Capacity Test (PBT) has been widely used for evaluating the subgrade and subbase condition on the pavement system. However, because the in-situ RC and PBT test are expensive and take plenties of time for operation, these are very difficult to figure out the in-situ characteristics of subgrade and subbase strength in detail. Therefore, for faster and economical operation, this study is to compare the Light Falling Weight Tests and propose the LFWD test as the in-situ Compaction test. This study suggests the relationship between in-situ RC value, $K_{30}$, $M_R$ and $E_{LFWD}$ of the subgrade and subbase materials in Korea using the laboratory and in-situ testing.

  • The compaction ratio of the field dry density to the maximum dry density is generally adopted as the index of quality control for embankment of earthfill structures such as Earth Dam, Sea Dike, River Bank and Road. In case of coarse materials are included in the earth material, the compaction ratio will be varied in wide range since the dry density is influenced by quantity of coarse material in the soil. The treatment for the coarse material should be controlled carefully in testing. In this study, the compaction characteristics of the soil contained the coarse materials were researched and calibration of the suitability of field quality control methods were carried out. 28 Samples were made of clay(CL) and sandy soil (SM) mixed with gravel whose content were 0, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 60% in Weight. The compaction characteristics depending on the coarse material content were analysed through 4 types of compaction tests which are A-1, B-i, C-i and D-1. The adjusting coefficients for density and moisture content namely a and ${\beta}$ respectively were proposed in order to consider the effects depending on content of the coarse materials. The test methods to control reasonably and promptly the quality of earthfill were proposed after analysing the ranges of possible errors on the relative compaction ratio between laboratory compaction methods and field density testing methods.

  • This paper presents experimental and numerical research results of centrifuge model tests performed to investigate the geotechnical engineering behavior of slag compaction pile as a substitute of sand compaction pile. For centrifuge model tests, bearing capacity of composit soil improved with slag compaction piles, stress concentrations in-between pile and soft clay, settlement characteristics, and failure modes were investigated with slags differing in their relative density. A slag was found to be a good substitute for a sand since the slag compaction pile model showed a greater yield stress intensity up to $30\%$ than the sand compaction pile model under the identical testing conditions. Stress concentration ratio tended to increase with the relative density of slag pile and the clear shear lines in the piles were observed at the depth of $2D{\sim}2.5D$ (D=dia. of model pile) from the top of the piles after loading tests. Numerical analysis with a software of CRISP, implemented with the modified Cam-clay model, was carried out to simulate the results of centrifuge model test. Test results about characteristics of load-settlement curves and stress concentration ratio are in relatively good agreements with numerical estimations.

  • Sand compaction pile (SCP) is one of the ground improvement techniques which are being used for not only accelerating consolidation but also increasing bearing capacity of loose sands or soft clay grounds. In this study, laboratory model tests and 3-D finite element analyses were performed to investigate the interaction between sand compaction piles and surrounding soft soils. Based on the results obtained, as the area replacement ratio increases, the stress concentration ratio increases at the pile point, the settlement decreases, and the relative displacement between column and soil also decreases. It is also found that numerical study is illustrated by good comparison with model test results, and the numerical analysis revealed slip effects which could not be specifically identified in the model tests.

  • The purpose of this research is to identify the effectiveness of injection with soil conditions by injecting CaCO3(created by microorganism reaction), which was recreated with equipment in similar situ condition. To analyze our research, we made 2 cases of single-layer (SP, SW) in D 150mm ${\times}$ H 300mm. Layers were made by RC 70, 80, 85, 90, 95% of soil condition. We measured uniaxial compression strength with cone penetrometer and watched injection range by checking a bulb formation around the injection nozzle. As a result, the relative compaction(RC) in more 85% were not injected in SW, we could identify the effect of bio-grouting technology on ground in relative compaction(RC) of injection ratio and cementation range.

  • The evaluation of the degree of compaction of the embankment area, which accounts for most of highway earthworks, is generally performed by a flat plate loading test. The plate loading test is a traditional test method and has high reliability in the field. However, as reaction force equipment must be carried out and it takes about 40 minutes per site during the test, there may be limitations in managing the entire expanse of earthworks. Meanwhile, in order to overcome this, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport proposed a simple method of evaluating the level of compactness in the provisional guidelines for compaction management of the packaging infrastructure in 2010. However, it has not been utilized at the highway construction site until now, 10 years later. Therefore, this study attempted to verify the utility of the compaction evaluation method using LFWD (Light Falling Weight Deflectometer) of the impact loading method among the test methods suggested in the provisional guideline. To this end, the correlation was derived by conducting a plate loading test and an LFWD test for each site property and compaction degree. As a result of the test, there was no consistency of test data in the ground with a relative compaction of 80% or less. However, it was confirmed that the correlation has a tendency to increase beyond that. If the test method or test equipment is improved to ensure the consistency of the test values of the impact loading method in the future, it will play a big role in solving the blind spot for compaction management in the earthworks.

  • In this study relative density tests of bottom ash and standard sand were carried out. And cyclic triaxial tests for samples with the relative density of 40%, 55%, and 70% were carried out on the basis of the test results. Cyclic triaxial tests were also conducted for fines content with 55% relative density. Residual samples were divided into No.40, No.60, No.60, and No.100, and No.200. In order to avoid crashing that can happen when compaction of the sample is initiated, bottom ash was crushed using the a compact mold. In consideration of the crushing characteristics of each residual samples, the fragmentation rate increased up to 30%, which led to the adjustment of fine-grained amount to 10%, 20%, and 30%. Through the repative triaxial test in accordance with the relative density, resistant characteristics of the liquefaction of bottom ash was analyzed. Test results show that, crushing strength of bottom ash was smaller than that of standard sand, resulting in different liquefaction behavior characteristics. And we could find fines content with maximum resistant characteristics of the liquefaction.
