Effect of Redox Processes and Solubility Equilibria on the Behavior of Dissolved Iron and Manganese in Groundwater from a Riverine Alluvial Aquifer (만경강 하천변 충적 지하수의 용존 Fe와 Mn 거동에 대한 산화-환원 과정과 용해 평형의 효과)

  • Biogeochemical characteristics involving redox processes in groundwater from a riverine alluvial aquifer was investigated using multi-level monitoring wells (up to 30m in depth). Anaerobic conditions were predominant and high Fe ($14{\sim}37mg/L$) and Mn ($1{\sim}4mg/L$) concentrations were observed at 10 to 20 m in depth. Below 20 m depth, dissolved sulfide was detected. Presumably, these high Fe and Mn concentrations were derived from the reduction of Fe- and Mn-oxides because dissolved oxygen and nitrate were nearly absent and Fe and Mn contents were considerable in the sediments. The depth range of high Mn concentration is wider than that of high Fe concentration. Dissolved organics may be derived from the upper layers. Sulfate reduction is more active than Fe and Mn reduction below 20 m in depth. Disparity of calculated redox potential from the various redox couples indicates that redox states are in disequilibrium condition in groundwater. Carbonate minerals such as siderite and rhodochrosite may control the dissolved concentrations of Fe(II) and Mn(II), and iron sulfide minerals control for Fe(II) where sulfide is detected because these minerals are near saturation from the calculation of solubility equilibria.

  • A porous $TiO_2$ pellet was electrochemically converted to the metallic titanium by using a $CaCl_2$ molten salt system at $850^{\circ}C$. Ni-$TiO_2$ and graphite electrodes were used as cathode and anode, respectively. The electrochemical behaviour of $TiO_2$ pellet was determined by a constant voltage control electrolysis. Various reaction intermediates such as $CaTiO_3$, $Ti_2O$ and $Ti_6O$ were observed by XRD analysis during electrolysis of the pellet. Once $TiO_2$ pellet was converted to a porous metallic structure, the porous structure disappeared by sintering and shrinking with increasing the reaction time at high temperature.

  • The anodic dissolution of electrodeposited iron group elements (Fe, Co, Ni) were studied in phthalate buffer solution. The pH dependence of the corrosion potential, the corrosion current and Tafel slope was measured for each element. Based on the electrochemical parameters including Tafel slopes, we proposed the redox mechanism of the corrosion and the passivation. The adsorption of various phthalate species on the electrodeposited iron group elements seemed to be affected the corrosion mechanisms.

Science High School Students' Understandings on Chemical Cells : In Relation to Chemical Equilibrium from the Microscopic Viewpoint at Molecular Level (과학고등학교 학생의 화학 전지에 대한 이해 분석: 분자적 수준의 미시적 관점에서 화학 평형과 연계하여)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the understandings of science high school students on the conception of chemical cell in relation to chemical equilibrium from the microscopic viewpoint at molecular level through questionnaires and follow-up interviews. The results show that they have high understandings on the chemical equilibrium states in the electrochemical cell and on the redox reaction taking place simultaneously when a metal electrode is immersed in the metal ion solution. However, they do not fully comprehend the development of electrical potential difference, electron movement, electrode potential measurement in the half-cells, and calculation of the net cell voltage between anode and cathode in the chemical cell because of difficulties in the microscopic understanding the interaction on the interface at the electrode and the electrolyte solution.

  • BCP의 이온화에너지 (Ionization Potential; IP)는 5.72ev와 전자친화도 (Electron Affinity; EA)는 2.85ev이며, PEDOT의 IP=5.74ev와 EA=3.3sev이고, TAZ의 IP=6.45ev와 EA=2.77ev, TPD는 IP=5.75ev와 EA=2.S8eV를 나타내었다. 그리고 BCP와 TAZ는 산화전위의 시작점과 증가곡선의 전위 변곡점과의 차이(정공층 갭)와 환원전위의 시작점과 변곡점의 차이(전자층 갭)가 서로 비슷하였으며, PEDOT과 TPD의 경우 정공층의 갭이 전자층의 갭보다 크게 나타났다.

Antibacterial properties of traditional ceramic glazes containing copper oxide (산화구리를 함유하는 전통 세라믹 유약의 항균특성에 관한 연구)

  • Traditional ceramic glazes formulated with copper oxide (CuO) exhibited antibacterial properties on Staphylococcus aureus (Gram Positive) and Escherichia coli (Gram Negative). All the ceramic glazes containing CuO showed antibacterial behavior when fired in reducing atmosphere. However, some of copper glazes presented antibacterial behavior and had no antibacterial properties at all when sintered in an oxidizing atmosphere. To elucidate the antibacterial mechanism, ceramic glazes were studied for phase and microstructure analysis, dissolution behavior and surface zeta potential. Metallic copper was precipitated in the glaze layer when sintered in reducing atmosphere. Less than 0.05 ppm of Cu ion was dissolved from glazes. Ca ion was most dissolved among all the samples. Glaze surface was highly negatively charged when CuO was added over 3 wt.% regardless of the sintering atmosphere. The antibacterial behavior of ceramic glazes seemed to be directly related to the dissolution behavior of cations, but the antibacterial behavior of oxidized specimens was not explained by the dissolution behavior. Surface potential of ceramic glazes appeared to play an auxiliary role in antibacterial properties.

Reduction of the Flow Accelerated Corrosion within Low Pressure Evaporator Connection Pipe by Interception of Hydrazine for Water Treatment (탈산소제 차단 수처리에 의한 배열회수보일러 저압증기발생기 연결배관내의 유동가속부식 저감)

  • Based on case that HRSG low pressure steam generator tube was damaged by FAC in 500 MW A CCPP. This case analyzed the effect of application about the block of hydrazine water treatment which is applied for increasing dissolved oxygen. And also try to deduce the major factor of FAC Which is caused by lacking of dissolved oxygen of boiler feed system. After 1 year of water treatment, the figure of dissolved oxygen in the boiler feed water has increased from 0.15 ppb to 3~5 ppb and the figure of oxidation reduction potential has increased from -245 mV to 170 mV. And Iron content, the corrosion products by FAC has decreased from 18.5 ppb to 5~7 ppb. According to the result of experiment, we could able to confirm that the interception of hydrazine of water treatment is effective to reduce FAC.

In-Situ Generation of Nanostructured Au Surfaces by Anodic Dissolution Followed by Cathodic Deposition (산화 용해에 연이은 환원 석출을 통한 나노구조 금 표면 형성)

  • Electrochemical fabrication of nanostructured Au surfaces has received increased attention. In the present work, electrochemical modification of Au surfaces for fabricating nanostructured Au surfaces in the absence of externally added precursors is presented, which is different to the previous methods utilizing electrochemical deposition of externally added precursors. Application of anodic potential at Au surfaces in phosphate buffers containing $Br^-$ resulted in the anodic dissolution of Au, which produced Au precursors at the electrode surfaces. The resulting Au precursors were further reduced at the surface to produce nanostructured Au structures. The effects of applied potential and time on the morphology of Au nanostructures were systematically examined, from which a unique backbone type Au nanostructures was produced. The backbone type Au nanostructures exhibited high surface-enhanced Raman activity. The present work would give insights into the formation of electrochemical fabrication of nanostructured Au surfaces.

간격이 조절된 갭 전극을 이용한 전기화학적 신호증폭 연구

  • 본 연구에서는 갭을 갖는 전극을 제작하고, 전극사이의 간격이 좁아짐에 따른 분석물질의 전기화학적 신호증폭현상을 확인하였다. 광 리소그래피와 전자빔 리소그래피를 이용하여 기본 전극을 구성하고 이를 바탕으로 전극의 표면에 금속의 환원을 유도함으로써 환원시간에 따라 전극이 점점 좁아지게 하는 방법을 이용하여 다양한 간격의 갭 전극을 제작하였다. 이와같은 방법으로 제작된 전극을 전기화학 신호분석장치에 연결하고, $2{\mu}m$의 간격부터 약 50 nm 까지의 다양한 전극 간격을 가지는 갭 전극 각각에 대한 전기화학적 신호를 분석하였다. 전극에 Ferricyanide 를 노출시켜 전극의 간격이 좁을수록 FeCN63-의 산화 환원에 따른 패러데이 전류가 증폭하는 것을 확인하였으며, 분석물질의 검출 한계 농도 또한 낮아짐을 확인하였다. 이러한 실험결과는 일정전위기의 순환전압전류법, 주사전자현미경, 원자힘현미경을 이용하여 분석되었다.

Pollutant Monitoring of Abandoned Mines using the Leaching Test with Soils and Tailings (토양 및 광미의 용출실험을 이용한 폐광산오염수준의 모니터링)

  • The contents were investigated by the monitoring survey from the soils and tailings caused by numerous abandoned mines in Korea. Cause heavy metals due to abandoned metal mines are raising significant environmental problems. But it is an important key such as a leaching and a transfer mechanism to evaluate contamination levels caused by abandoned mines. In this study the column test was carried in order to calculate a leaching level from soils and tailings. It was demonstrated that the leaching of Pb, Cd and Mn was expressed with similar behaviors and that of As and Cu was expressed with similar behaviors. For Zn, the leaching behavior was shown a serious leaching level with 40 mg/kg during the 45days. This was explained by Zn high contents of soils Zn in a natural world and ORP conditions where the leaching of Zn was occurred easily. Hence it was necessary that the survey of ORP was a key as well as total contents for the management of abandoned metal mines. We could estimate the chemical forms of heavy metals using the physical index such as ORP and pH and reduce the risk from heavy metals caused by abandoned metal mines.
