  • In recent years, there are strong social demands to characterize the spatial distribution of mountains in Korea. This study aims to develop a 'Sanjulgi-Jido(mountain ridge map)' that might be used not only to satisfy these social demands but also to effectively present the spatial distribution of mountains and drainage basins in the Korean Peninsular. The 'Sanjulgi-Jido' developed in this study is a map that presents the continuity of mountains based on the drainage divides that are delineated by a pre-defined drainage basin size and elevation. This study first validated the Bakdudaegan system through the analyses of a digital elevation model. The Bakdudaegan system has long been recognized as the Koreans traditional conceptual framework to characterize the spatial distribution of mountains. The analyses showed that the Bakdudaegan system has several problems to represent the mountain systems in Korea, which includes 1) the lack of the representativeness of drainage basins, 2) inaccuracy to depict the boundary of drainage basins, 3) the lack of representativeness of mountains, and 4) geo-polical issue that confines the spatial extent of mountain systems within the Korean Peninsular. In order to represent the mountains system in a more quantitative manner, we applied several terrain analysis techniques to understand the spatial distribution of mountains and drainage basins. Based on these analyses, we developed an hierarchical system to classify the continuity (If mountains, which are presented as the spatial distribution of drainage divides with a certain elevation. The first-order Sanjulgi is the drainage divides whose drainage basin are bigger than $5,000km^2$ and the point elevation is above 100m. The next order Sanjulgi is delineated as the size of drainage basin is successively divided by two. This kind of design is able to provide a logical framework to present the mountain systems at different details, depending on the purpose and scale of maps. We also provide several empirical functions to calculate various geomorphological indices for each order of Sanjulgi. The 'Sanjulgi Jido' is similar with the Bakdudaegan system, since it characterizes the continuity of mountains based on the spatial distribution of the drainage divide. It, however, has more scientific criteria to define the scale and continuity of mountains. It should be also noted that the 'Sanjulgi Jido' proposed has different logical and methodological background, compared with the mountain range map that explains the genesis of mountain systems in addition to the continuity of mountains.

  • This study was conducted to clarify the distribution and fragmented points of mountain range and to select priority points for restoration by assessment in Daejeon. There were ten Semaek of mountain extended from three Jimaek in Daejeon. As a result of overlapping the main mountain ridge with a network of roads, twelve points out of total thirty-one fragmented points were chosen as practical points for restoration. We developed index and model to assess twelve practical points for restoration. All points were classified into three grades, four points of grade I, five points of grade II and three points of grade III. From this study, we proposed differentiated restoration plan for each grade. Further studies on development of more objective assessment and detailed methodology should be needed to prepare effective restoration plan.

  • The study is to systematically review "DaedongYeojiJeondo", the mid-sized wood block map of Chosun to shed light on the cartographic characteristics not discovered by previous studies. First it was discovered that Kim Jung-ho is the developer of the map as the distance information from Seoul to towns is identical with the information on "Daedong Jiji" the manuscript map drawn by Kim Jung-ho himself (assumed to live from 1804~1866) that is still remaining unfinished. Second, the information Kim Jung-ho wanted to specify most precisely and specifically was distance from Seoul to towns and for this purpose he invented unique symbols for towns in tiny size on the map. Third, in selecting information to mark on the map including road network, street information, mountain routes and streams and location of islands, "DaedongYeojiJeondo" is not just a simple smaller copy of "DaedongYeojido" but an independent creative work as it is much different in many aspects of quality. Forth, but still "DaedongYeojiJeondo" and "DaedongYeojido" have something in common in the fact both of them tried to mark land and mountain routes and streams most precisely and specifically.

  • In this study, how much users of Hannamkeumbuk Keumbuk Mountains are aware of Baekdaegan and its attached mountain chains, a traditional geographic system, according to Sangyungpyo and basic data like the degree of awareness and use-behaviors, etc. have been studied. In addition, the environmental value of Hannamkeumbuk Keumbuk Mountains separating the central and the southern part of Korea among attached mountain ranges, secondary mountain chains, which act as an ecosystem buffer in the Baekdudaegan Range, has been estimated at the current amount of currency. In the questions of the perception of the traditional classification standard of mountain chains and Baekdudaegan, more than 70% of respondents answered that they had heard of or known them but 66.8% werenot aware of Hannamkeumbuk Keumbuk Mountains. While the awareness for Baekdudaegan is high, the perception of its attached mountain chains was very poor. DBDC responder system and CVM, which is used widely for the value estimate method of environment goods, were used. As the result, an additional benefit got when a person visits Hannamkeumbuk Keumbuk mountains was estimated as 5,813 won. It could find out that this amount was very low compared with 51,984 won, average visit cost. It judged that the reason was that damage of environmental conditions, the monotony of the trails and progress of indiscriminate environmental destruction, etc. The results of this study will offer a new perspective on public relations activities and resource conservation of Baekdudaegan and its attached mountain chains and estimate perceptions and efficient services for visitors to HannamKeumbuk Keumbuk Mountains. This study will act as data for basic planning and management to increase the mountains' value and to preserve them. Further studies are needed to make a frame of work division and management with various organizations so that the management of Hannamkeumbuk-Keumbuk Mountains may be properly established and their value may been hanced.

  • Recent disputes on mountain ranges in Korea have partially been derived from the discordance of the spatial distribution and the extent of mountain ranges presented by different researchers and school textbooks. The lack of consensus on the definition and genesis of mountain ranges adds further confusion. In order to overcome these problems, it is necessary to provide genetically classified mountain range maps for different usages, map scales and educational purposes. This paper first argues that mountain ranges and mountain ridges should separately be used as different conceptual frameworks to explain complex spatial distribution of mountains in Korea. The new mountain range map (sanmaekdo) proposed in this research puts strong emphasis on tectonic movement and denudational processes to explain the spatial distribution of mountains. The new mountain range map has 15 mountain ranges (sanmaek: in total, which are further divided into 7 primary and 8 secondary mountain ranges. The new mountain range map eliminates Jeogyuryeongsanmaek, Myohyangsanmaek, Myeoraksanmaek, and Masingnyeongsanmaek from the existing map, since these have a vague definition and obscure spatial distribution. On the contrary, few new primary mountain ranges (Gilju-Myeongcheonsanmaek, Yangsansanmaek, Jirisanmaek) and secondary mountain ranges (Wolchulsanmaek and Buksubaeksanmaek) are added to the new mountain range map. Other mountain ranges also show a large difference both in their spatial distribution and the extent of mountain ranges, compared with the previous map. This is especially the case for Nangnimsanmaek, Hamgyeongsanmaek, Taebaeksanmaek, and Sobaeksanmaek. A few new names are also assigned to Macheollyeongsanmaek (Baekdusanmaek), Gwangjusanmaek (Hwaaksanmaek), Charyeongsanmaek (Chiaksanmaek), and Horyeongsanmaek (Naejangsanmaek), even though they show similar spatial distribution patterns with the ones in the existing map.

  • Jang Sang-Hoon(장상훈) concluded that Dongyeo(東輿) seemed to be made between 1859 and 1866 but it was ahead of Cheonggudo(靑邱圖) in terms of the content and format. Accordingly he insisted that Cheonggudo was compiled based on the original version of Dongyeo which was supposed to be drawn between 1790 and 1834. This paper reappraised critically the previous researches and got several findings. Firstly, the changes of place names-4 places names were selected for the Jang Sang-Hoon's research and 2 were added in this paper-are reflected in the Yeodobiji(輿圖備志) and Dongyeo compiled by Choi Seonghwan(최성환) and Kim Jeongho(金正浩) between 1853 and 1856. Secondly, the sectioning format of Dongye shows some transitional character from the book style such as Cheonggudo to the folding style that was shown in Dongyeodo(東輿圖) and Daedongyeojido(大東輿地圖). Thirdly, the expression of the mountains in Dongyeo shares the same style which is shown in Dongyeodo and Daedongyejido. Fourth, Dongyeo contains the same information about old military bases and the castle locations in small local town centers that appear in Dongyeodo and Daedongyeojido but not in Cheonggudo and similar kinds of maps. In conclusion, Dongyeo and the original version of it are likely to be drawn by Kim Jeongho between 1853 and 1856 after Cheonggudo was made.
