  • This study initiated with the intention to reveal the social consultations and fissures through a comparative analysis on generational characteristics by indicating occupation-related identities with the concept of social identity supported by theoretical resources. According to the three dimensions of social identity which are evaluation, potency and activity, there was more generational agreement rather than difference toward occupation-related identities. Among the 44 identities, only evaluation dimensions on minister, congressman, plane captain, farmer and potency dimensions on CEO of a major companies, professor, medical doctor, nurse, celebrity, shaman, unemployed person were statistically significant. For 'Leader and Professional', the respondents in their 50's gave high scores in both evaluation and potency dimensions. On the other side, the 30's had negative viewpoints while the 20's and 40's had neutral perspectives. For the potency dimension, the age groups were divided into the 20's, 30's and 40's, 50's; having the younger generations underestimate the potency dimension of such categories. Also for the 'General Occupation', 20's and the 30's relatively devaluated with more distinctive degree toward evaluation dimensions. For religion, 20's and 30's were positive toward buddhist monks while the 40's and 50's were more favorable with priests. For the non-economically active population, the lifetime cycle influenced each generations. When performing a two dimensional analysis toward the 'Leader and Professional' with evaluation and potency on each axis, the 50's highly evaluated both evaluation and potency dimension of such identities. However, for the 40's, 30's and 20's, the average value fell while the focus of the distribution deepened. The 30's had negative perspective toward the evaluation dimension while the 20's reflected critical attitude toward the potency dimension.

  • The purpose of this study is to figure out what the beauty of the modern body means and symbolizes from the aesthetic, sociocultural, and psychological perspectives and to investigate how it was formed in the modern Korean society. The data were obtained from the magazines and newspapers published from 1920 to 1939 and analyzed by qualitative content analysis. The results were as follows: First, the modern body from an aesthetic standpoint was characterized by the beauty of westernization, healthy body shape, sensuality, curvaceousness, activity, balance and harmony, and artificiality. The beauty of the modern body from a sociocultural perspective symbolized modern culture and implied the value evaluated by visual appearance. Therefore, the modern body became an object of consumption and the physical capital that gave women chances for their social success and happy marriages. The beauty of the modern body from a psychological viewpoint expressed individuality as a modern ego. Second, the formation of modern body esthetics was explained within the context of social comparison theory. The ideal body suggested by mass media was internalized as the aesthetic standard women used to create modern bodies and with which they compared their created bodies.

  • In mathematics and computer science, an optimization problem is the problem of finding the best solution from feasible ones. In the context of genetic algorithm, the difficulty of an optimization problem can be explained in terms of problem epistasis. In biology, epistasis means that the phenotype of a gene is suppressed by one or more genes, but in an evolutionary algorithm it means the interaction between genes. In this paper, we experimentally show that problem epistasis and the performance of genetic algorithm are closely related. We compared problem epistasis (One-Max, Royal Road, and NK-Landscape) using a framework that quantifies problem epistasis based on Shannon's information theory, and could show that problem becomes more difficult as problem epistasis grows. In the case that a genetic algorithm finds the optimal solution, performance is compared through the number of generations, otherwise through the ratio of the fitness of the optimal solution to that of the best solution.

  • Social class has become a major focus of research in the field of Western psychology due to its critical impact on human life. The Korean scholarship in psychology, however, has paid very little attention to the issue of social class despite the deepening of social stratification in the country; and the concepts and measurement they used were typically borrowed from sociology. In this study, I discussed what social class means and how it should be measured in order to emphasize the importance of the concept and its related issues. To this end, I examined a variety of theoretical backgrounds on the measurement of social class and the concept of socioeconomic status (SES)-a term commonly used as a synonym for social class. This study divided the method of measuring social class into objective social class and subjective social class, and outlined the characteristics of each approach and their main indicators. Finally, I assessed the recent trend in the Korean psychology on social class measurement. Among the 23 studies I have found, 65.2% used the objective social class index; and education was the objective indicator they most frequently employed, followed by income and occupation. Social stratification identity was used in all seven studies that applied subjective social class. And seven different words to describe social class was found. Based on these results, I concluded that there should be a call for more direct research on social class variables. In addition, I suggest that 'social class', instead of socioeconomic status, should be used as a preferred term in the future studies and propose a few notes on how to use the objective indicators and subjective social class measurement.

  • Today, nuclear energy conflict is caused from the dangerous radioactive material. The main party of this conflict are politic and economic systems which deride nuclear energy, and the persons concerned which it oppose and the anti-nuclear environment group. If the nuclear waste is transported from one nation to another nation, multi national anti-nuclear group appears as conflict party. We call this domestic and transnational risk communication new social movement. From the viewpoint of system theory, the new social movement can mean the offensive development of self-reference which withstand the "technicalization of communication" through the "symbolically generalized communication media" like money and power. By comparing Northeast Asia and Europe, the nuclear energy conflict did not show a big difference in the selection of nuclear waste storing site. In the Northeast Asia, when Taiwan exports the nuclear waste to North Korea, the international conflict broke out. In Europe, Germany has a hard experience with the construction-plan for the re-treating plant that produces the plutonium from the dangerous nuclear waste, and with the transnational transport of the nuclear waste. The new social movement aims the global paradigm which is able to guarantee the subtainability of ecological environment. The nuclear conflict in the "world risk society" is solved through the "discourse-alliance" which accomplishes sub-politics by crossing the border of class, nation and system.

  • Regional learning in social studies has an important educational meaning in that it is a tabloid edition of social studies and it also satisfies the regionalization of national curriculum. Social studies in Korea have mainly been led by the social study curriculum of elementary school. But the local textbook which was currently used in elementary school is structured in a negative meaning of regionalization rather than positive one. It is suggested in this study that the regional learning of social studies in middle school should be pursued by the co-work of teachers and students. For this purpose, the theoretical and practical processes to develop the local textbook are compared between two distinctive localities such as Sancheong and Seosan. At first, the relative ratio among the six strands is decided to develop several themes for regional learning, considering the landscape, region-related discourses and ecological environments in each region. Secondly, several themes are extracted to organize the contents of local textbook in each region. Lastly, examples of content-organization are suggested in each region. The processes above are just an example of content-organization, not a fixed one. The process, themes extracted, and the content-organization for each region may be changed according to the school location, local situation, and the quality of classroom.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of altruism and the civil right consciousness on the ageism against older people. Using data of 1,513 persons over 18 years old from the Korean General Social Survey(KGSS)(2011), this study applied descriptive analyses, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis and multi-regression with STATA14. According to results, the degree of ageism was slightly lower(2.43 out of 5). Compared to age groups, the results were followed: elderly, middle age, and young age group. Among them, the ageism level of the group to have experiences of discrimination was higher than one of the group not to have it. The degree of altruism was high(3.95 out of 5), followed by elderly, middle age, and young age group. The group experienced in discrimination had higher level of altruism than another. The degree of the civil right consciousness was high(5.83 out of 7) without differences among age groups. In the results of regression analysis, the ageism was negatively affected by altruism and the civil right consciousness. Based on the results, this study suggested practical and political opinions for reducing ageism.

  • With the fast development of complex science, lots of social networks are studied. We know that the social network is widely applied in analyzing issues in human culture, economics and web sciences. Recently we witness that some researchers began to compare the social network constructed from fiction literatures(literature social network) and the real social network obtained from practice. But we point that previous approaches for literature social network have some drawbacks since they completely depend on the biographical dictionary constructed for a designated literature. So since the previous approach focus on the few important characters and peoples around them, we can not understand the global structure of all characters appeared in the literature at least once. We propose one method to extract all characters appeared in the literature and how to make the social network from that information. Also we newly propose K-critical network by applying frequency of the named characters and the strength of relationship among all textual characters. Our experiment shows that the K-critical measure could be one crucial quantitative measure to compute the relationship strength among characters appeared in the object literature.
