  • In spite of a growing number of recent studies that indicate students are coming to view scientists with more varied images, the stereotypical image of scientists remains in many students' minds. In this study, the authors explore how college students change their perceptions of science and scientists through the use of a documentary that focuses on scientists' daily lives, including laboratory life, and their emotional ups-and-downs. We analyzed 109 college students' essays on perceptions about scientists after watching the documentary. As a result, 64.2% of the college students declared that there was a change in their perception of scientists. The students' new perceptions of science and scientists are as follows: 1) scientists undergo emotional ups-and-downs just like any normal person; 2) scientists experience numerous failures while researching; 3) science does not have a fixed answer and scientists undertake research with creativity; 4) scientists conduct research in collaboration, but also in highly competitive environments; 5) scientists are often frustrated with their socio-economic status. The students' previous perceptions on science and scientists were mainly stereotypical ones that have been reported in previous studies. In addition, of the other college students who did not change their perceptions, the majority declared that they have new perceptions such as 1) - 5). Only a small percentage of students (7.3%) had unchanged stereotypical perceptions. These results are interpreted as that college students relatively easily change their stereotypical images of scientists after watching the documentary but, alternatively, the results can be interpreted that the most stereotypical images of college students are not perceptions that form a deep impression, but rather they are simply depictions of representative images of scientists given from outside sources (e.g. the mass media and school).

  • This study was to gain a suggestion how to educate the science gifted student and manage the science gifted education center by analyzing the science gifted student's perception of the science, scientist and vocation. One seventy and eight science gifted students were involved in the questionnaire to investigating the perception of science, scientist and vocation. As the results, many of science gifted students thought the convenience as the positive aspect of science and the environmental pollution as the negative aspect of science. Science gifted students considered most scientists a diligent person, researcher and what's more, they are careless about home. They suggested much more of foreign scientists like Einstein, Edison, etc. than Korean ones as respectable scientists. Scientist is a major vocation that they want and know in the science area, while some students want to be a doctor, occurred to science singer. The mystery, difficulty, complexity, scientist, etc. occurred to science gifted students when they heard the ‘science’. According to the results, there are in need of the new educational programs for the science gifted students and science gifted education center. One of the aims of the science gifted education center is the judgment and cultivation of the science gifted student. Therefore, the science gifted student to be educated to improve positively the images of science and scientist. In addition to, they should get a concern about the vocation in science area and to be a famous scientist.

  • While Science tries to be far from Society, it actually does yearn for the trust from Society, on the other side. Its efforts getting back the trust has been witnessed with its fast evolution, consistent distrust from Society and Scientists' accountability with investment of public fund. Furthermore, many scholars have argued that there is the need to integrate science and society. In this regards, this paper explores how to integrate both spheres by participatory evaluation. To identify how the participatory evaluation works and should be, three main issues are mentioned. One is about evaluation methods; Objective-oriented and Behaviour aspects. Second is about prerequisite factors; sharing scientific language and changed recognition between civil society and scientists. Third is about challenge to be tackled; epistemological gap among evaluators and complex index. Under these issues, this paper sets out that the participatory evaluation should adopt the appropriate evaluation methodology. Last but not least, self-recognition and motivation by evaluators themselves are important factors, along with societal system which can take participatory evaluation.

  • This paper examines a historical case- the French Revolution- of conceptual change in mathematics. The case that is a space of possibility gave birth to a new community of mathematical practitioners. Carnot and Monge shared the particular conceptions of the problems, aims, and methods of a field and contributed to found Ecole Polytechnique. I intend to show how Carnot's and Monge's mathematical endeavours responded to social, political and technological developments in French society.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the perception on science and scientists of the teachers who are engaged in the special education for the scientifically gifted, science-gifted students and their parents. For this study, 34 teachers, 222 students and 107 parents answered the questionnaire of the perception on science and Draw-A-Science-Test (DAST). The result showed that the three groups generally had a sound recognition but the score of recognition about a 'nature of science' was lower than other domains. The science-gifted students had less cognition about 'science and society' than their teachers and parents, but they had more positive perception about 'science learning' than their parents significantly. All of the three groups had the stereotyped image of scientist. About the internal images of scientists, three groups had a similar perception, and they showed higher scores in the cognitive aspect than emotional or ethical aspects. And the science-gifted students showed the significantly higher scores than their teachers and parents in diligence, imaginative power, concern about other people, respect for other's opinion, humor, artistic sense, respect for human, desire for peace. Three groups turned out to be influenced by movie, science journal, and biography as a source of scientist's image, but their contribution was different among groups.
