  • This study was conducted to predict the changes of yearly productive area distribution for pinus densiflora under climate change scenario. For this, site index equations by ecoprovinces were first developed using environmental factors. Using the large data set from both a digital forest site map and a climatic map, a total of 48 environmental factors including 19 climatic variables were regressed on site index to develop site index equations. Two climate change scenarios, RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5, were then applied to the developed site index equations and the distribution of productive areas for pinus densiflora were predicted from 2020 to 2100 years in 10-year intervals. The results from this study show that the distribution of productive areas for pinus densiflora generally decreases as time passes. It was also found that the productive area distribution of Pinus densiflora is different over time under two climate change scenarios. The RCP 8.5 which is more extreme climate change scenario showed much more decreased distribution of productive areas than the RCP 4.5. It is expected that the study results on the amount and distribution of productive areas over time for pinus densiflora under climate change scenarios could provide valuable information necessary for the policies of suitable species on a site.

  • This study was conducted to estimate forest site productivity and productive areas of Quercus acutissima and Quercus mongolica using environmental factors including climatic variables. Using the data set from digital forest site map and forest climatic map, a total of 42 environmental variables were regressed on site index for developing the best site index equations for Quercus acutissima and Quercus mongolica. Five to six environmental factors by species were selected as independent variables in the best site index equations. For the site index equations, three evaluation statistics (i.e., mean difference, standard deviation of difference, and standard error of difference) were applied to the test data set for the validation of the results, The site index equations fitted well to the test data set with relatively low bias and variation. As a result, it was concluded that the site index equations by species were well capable of estimating site quality. Finally, based on the site index equations, the productive areas by species were estimated by applying GIS technique to the digital forest maps. In addition, the distribution of productive areas by species was illustrated.

  • This study is to comparatively analyse the place names on "Cheonggu-do"("靑邱圖", manuscript edition, 1834) and "Daedongyeo-jido"("大東輿地圖", woodblock-edition, 1861). Though the same person-Kim, Jungho(金正浩)- published those maps, and the latter was based on the former map, place names on thos maps are very different. The hypothesis is that those different information on maps were not from the cartographic, but from the social aspects at that times. The whole township names on "Cheonggu-do" were erased in "Daedongyeo-jido". The other names such as mountain, river, port, castle, beacons, official waer houses were recorded instead of township. Especially military names which were recorded newly in "Daedongyeo-jido", such as castle, beacon, ranches for the defense of nation, was geographical distributed in a strategic and key point in the northern and coastal area. This shows that there were rules for the mapping of "Daedongyeo-jido" and those rules could be come from the social demand.

  • Expansion of potato production areas can improve the food security in North Korea because the given crop has less requirements for agricultural materials and facilities. The Global Agro-Ecological Zones (GAEZ) model, which was developed to evaluate climate suitability under different cultivation conditions, was used to identify potential areas for the potato production. The spatial estimates of crop suitability under low and high input management conditions were downloaded from the GAEZ data portal. The values of suitability were obtained at the potato occurrence sites retrieved from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) database. The suitable areas for the potato production were identified using a threshold value derived from the suitability estimates at the occurrence sites. It was found that 90% of the occurrence sites had the suitability index value >3,333, which was set to be the threshold value. The suitable areas in North Korea were summarized by province and county. Rice cultivation areas were excluded from the analysis. The reported relative acreage of potato production was better represented by the suitable areas under the low input management options than the high input conditions. The suitable areas also had a similar distribution to the reported acreage of potato production by county. These results indicated that the GAEZ model would be useful to identify the candidate production areas, which would facilitate the increases in potato production especially under future climate conditions. Furthermore, monthly maps of crop suitability can be used to design cropping systems that would improve crop production under the limited use of agricultural materials and facilities.

  • In a torrential river, the flow of debris forms deposits in the river bed, which show the characteristics of the channel bed movement in the watershed. The annual rings of the trees, in the natural evenaged forests on the deposits, indicate when each deposit occurred. Based on the topographical and vegetational indicators on the sediment of Yongcheon and Yeounae rivers, the movement occurrence years were estimated. 1. The cross sectional shapes of deposits in torrential river are in tiers and even-aged forests tend to establish on each tier. 2. Generally the older the forest age is, the higher the height of step from the lowest base tend to become, which indicates discrete movement in magnitude and frequency. 3. The ages of trees indicate the year when deposition occurred, and so may be useful as plant indicator to get spatial-temporal information of deposits. 4. The deposits volumes(F. V.) were dependent on the age distribution of deposits in length, average width and average height. And the average width and the average height of deposits were increasing with the age.

  • This study addresses the topic of suitability analysis for helping with land use planning, which is one of important decision-making in urban planning, utilizing geographic information system. Covering the Kumi City before integrating with neighbor county, the site suitabilities for land uses, which are categorized into residential, commercial, industrial and green, were analyzed using the overlay method based upon the database constructed for this study. In the process, assessment criteria which include environmental factors and relative weights were determined and also the land use/cover map and NDVI map which were generated through satellite image processing were included in the database. The suitability maps by four function spaces were derived according to the grade and compared with the present land use state and the land use concept map of urban master plan. For more accurate analysis, practical developing plan, land price data, soil data should be included. Also if the demand estimation data by each land use had been added, the reliability of location allocation could have been raised.

  • Countries around the world, including the Republic of Korea, are participating in efforts to preserve biodiversity. Concerning species, in particular, studies that aim to find potential habitats and establish conservation plans by conducting habitat suitability analysis for specific species are actively ongoing. However, few studies on mid- to long-term changes in suitable habitat areas are based on accumulated information. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the time-series changes in the habitat suitable area and examine the otters' changing pattern (Lutra lutra) designated as Level 1 endangered wildlife in Gangwon-do. The time-series change analysis used the data on otter species' presence points from the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th national natural environment surveys conducted for about 20 years. Moreover, it utilized the land cover map consistent with the survey period to create environmental variables to reflect each survey period's habitat environment. The suitable habitat area analysis used the MaxEnt model that can run based only on the species presence information, and it has been proven to be reliable by previous studies. The study derived the habitat suitability map for otters in each survey period, and it showed a tendency that habitats were distributed around rivers. Comparing the response curves of the environmental variables derived from the modeling identified the characteristics of the habitat favored by otters. The examination of habitats' change by survey period showed that the habitats based on the 2nd National Natural Environment Survey had the widest distribution. The habitats of the 3rd and 4th surveys showed a tendency of decrease in area. Moreover, the study aggregated the analysis results of the three survey periods and analyzed and categorized the habitat's changing pattern. The type of change proposed different conservation plans, such as field surveys, monitoring, protected area establishment, and restoration plan. This study is significant because it produced a comprehensive analysis map that showed the time-series changes of the location and area of the otter habitat and proposed a conservation plan that is necessary according to the type of habitat change by region. We believe that the method proposed in this study and its results can be used as reference data for establishing a habitat conservation and management plan in the future.
