  • The importance of R & D activities has been emphasized in modem economy due to rapid growth of high-tech industry. This research has taken a macroscopic approach to understand the spatial location pattern of company-affiliated R & D institute. According to the result based on this analysis, a number of company-affiliated R & D institutes have shown high centralization in Seoul Metropolitan Area(SMA); however, more serious analysis has shown that institutes have different regional tendencies based on their industrial classifications with lower high-tech tendencies show less centralization in the SMA. Moreover, it also has indicated that larger corporations or higher capability of hiring top class researcher have tendency to decentralize their institutes. The result also points out that institutes are likely to be located near their head offices or factories; or located along with other research institutes in the same industrial field. The locations of the institutes, however, have shown the regional differences as well. After taking all the characteristics into consideration, this study has categorized types of institutes locations into four groups.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate office location dynamic in Seoul and to analyze comparatively the office activities of emerging office centers. Since mid 1980s, the expansion of office employment and spatial differentiation of the office-type jobs have changed the employment and spatial structure of Seoul. The major employment centers are CBD, Kangnam district and Youido. Among these, CBD and Kangnam have developed as the two leading centers of Seoul. Youido, the typical office-oriented center, shares CBD functions especially specializing security business. Selective decentralization of offices made qualitative differences among the centers. In spite of vigorous office decentralization, CBD has kept the principal offices of finance and insurance, travel agencies, advertising agencies, management consulting firms, major public institutions and headquarters of upper 100 companies in Korea. But the offices of producer services such as law, architects, engineering and computer consulting and real estates and headquarters of upper 5000 companies in Korea have been decentralized dominantly to Kangnam.

This study analyzes the present status of risk management in the construction industry, and then suggests reasonable methods for improved risk management plans. This study defines risk management procedures as preparation, identification, analysis, response and management to manage potential risks In the construction project. The modules for computerizing this system consist of planning, construction, application of WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) and RBS (Risk Breakdown Structure), and risk analysis. The method logy for analyzing construction risk uses fuzzy theory, and the scope of developed system is focused to the contractors. The risk management system suggested in this study operates on the Internet, for providing contractors with a useful risk management tool by online system, with web-based menus that is helpful for practical application.

  • In a global software development project, knowledge transfer between a corporate headquarter and offshore development sites is considered to be important for effective software development. This article presents empirical research that investigates factors influencing knowledge transfer in global software development. The factors evaluated in this study are: 1) quality of communication infrastructure, 2) quality of partnership and 3) types of governance mechanism. Questionnaires were collected from offshore development sites in Mauritius. While the quality of both the partnership and communication infrastructure were found to be determinants to knowledge transfer, hierarchical governance had a negative impact on knowledge transfer. Although the results are similar to the previous studies done within an organizational boundary, implications of the results are far different due to the geographical distance among offshore locations. Future research is called for to investigate the relationships between governance type and knowledge transfer.

  • There are some questions about the way to monitoring the regional innovative activities in a specific field because of decision-making for raising regional specialized industry. Numerous studies have been conducted in the past using patent statistics to explain and compare the innovative capabilities of districts, regions and countries. The prior method of calculating the regional distribution of patent counts is to assign the patents to districts by assignee's address, which was not proper, in the case of larger firms's headquarters, holdings or subsidiaries, to mislead in geographical terms. So the regional distribution of patent was counted for a specific technology area, electric device field(H01 IPC classification), by inventors' residential addresses. Then the interregional structure was investigated by analysing the relations of co-inventors' regions by individual patent using a network analysis tool.
