  • This study has been focused on an application of microwave pre-treatment of soil contaminated with volatile organic chemicals, and BTEX(benzene, toluene, ethylene, xylene). Microwave experiments were carried out under different power conditions (2 kW, 4 kW) using different moisture contents and BTEX concentration. According to these results of this study, the most BTEX removal efficiency was with 20% moisture contents regardless of electric power. The result show that 2kW was determined to the optimum electric power at $10{\sim}30%$ moisture contents, but the optimum power was 4 kW at 50% of moisture content.

  • The spheric sintered body with $6{\pm}2mm$ diameter was manufactured in a rotary kiln at $1125^{\circ}C$/15 min using green body formed by pelletizing the batch powder composing of coal bottom ash produced from power plant and dredged soil by 70:30, wt%. And the physical properties of sintered body (BD) were analyzed to confirm the possibility for applying to an absorbent to restore a contaminated soil. The sintered body had a giant pore above 100 ${\mu}m$ and a fine pore below 10 ${\mu}m$, and bulk density was 1.4. Also its specific surface area, porosity and void proportion were $12.0m^2/g$, 30.1% and 38.2% respectively. The crushed body (BD-C), produced by crushing a BD specimen into an irregular shape with a aspect ratio of about 2, was similar to BD specimen at bulk density and pore size distribution. But it had superior values of specific surface area, porosity and void proportion compared with BD specimen owing to a decreased apparent volume due to conversion of closed pore existed at interior of BD to open pore during a crushing process. The IEP of sintered body occurred at about pH=5, so the optimum pH condition of reacting aqueous solution could be known before bonding a microbe to the sintered body. Hence, the optimum void proportion and porosity of an absorbent can be obtained by appropriate mixing a BD with BD-C from the base data calculated in this study.

  • Contamination of groundwater resources by organic chemicals has become an issue of increasing environmental concern. Surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR) is widely recognized as one of the most promising techniques to remediate organic contaminations in-situ. Solutions of surfactant or surfactant with polymer are used to dramatically expedite the process, which in turn, may reduce the treatment time of a site compared to use of water alone. In the design of surfactant-based technologies for remediation of organic contaminated aquifers, it is very important to have a considerable analysis using extensive numerical simulations prior to full-scale implementation. This study investigated the formation and flow of microemulsions during SEAR of organic-contaminated aquifer using the finite difference model UTCHEM, a three-dimensional, multicomponent, multiphase, compositional model. The remediation process variables considered in this study were the sequence of injection fluids, the injection and extraction rate, the concentrations of polymer in surfactant slug and chase water, and the duration of surfactant injection. For each variable, temporal changes in injection and production wells and spatial distributions of relative saturations in the organic phase were compared. Cleanup time and cumulative organic recovery were also quantified. The study would provide useful information to design strategies for the remediation of nonaqueous phase liquid-contaminated aquifers.

  • In remediation of the contaminated soil, it requires to select at least more than two remediation technologies depending on the fate and transport phenomena through complicated reactions in soil matrix. Therefore, methodologies related to develop the integrated remediation technology were reviewed for agricultural soils contaminated with heavy metals. Pneumatic fracturing is necessary to implement deficiency because soil washing is not effective to remove heavy metals in the subsurface soil. But it needs to evaluate the characteristics such as essential data and factors of designated technology in order to effectively apply them in the site. In the remediation site, the important soil physical and chemical factors to be considered are hydrology, porosity, soil texture and structure, types and concentrations of the contaminants, and fate and its transport properties. However, the integrated technology can be restrictive by advective flux in the area which remediation is highly effective although both soil washing and pneumatic fracturing were applied simultaneously in the site. Therefore, we need to understand flow pathways of the target contaminants in the subsurface soils, that includes kinetic desorption and flux, predictive simulation modeling, and complicated reaction in heterogenous soil.

  • Sutfactants may be used in remediation of subsoil and aquifer contaminated with hydrophobic compounds. The objectives of this study were to select potentially suitable sUlfactants that solubilize toluene present as a contaminant and to determine the effectiveness of toluene removal from Ottawa sand by the selected surfactants. Material used as the model soil was Ottawa sand and the organic used as model contaminant was toluene. Used experimental methods were separatory funnel experiment and shaker table agitation/centrifugation experiments. Based on the experimental results, the following conclusions were drawn; t) In the surfactant selection, six different surfactants were chosen based on surfactant types, toxicity, and water solubility. These six were focused into two on the basis of HLB and surface tension study, separatory funnel experiment, shaker table and centrifugation experiments. The two most suitable surfactants were Sandopan JA36 (an anionic surfactant), and Pluronic L44 (a non-ionic surfactant). 2) In the shaker table agitation and centrifugation experiments, the highest recovery of the toluene was 96% which was obtained with one surfactant wash plus two water rinses using an anionic surfactant (Sandopan JA36).

  • In this paper, a digital watermarking scheme whichis effective in protecting a copyright of video image under an image transformation and impulse noise is proposed. The proposing scheme is to use a coded watermark that insert the personal ID of copyrighter. The recovery ability is improved by the coded watermark. Also the coded watermark is abel to trace the illegal distributors. Binary image is used as watermark image, the value of PSNR and recovered rates of watermark are obtained in order to confirm the required invisibility and robustness in watermark system. The experimental results show that image quality is less degraded as the PSNR of 98.21 ㏈. It is also observed that excellent watermark recovery is achieved under the image transformation and impulse noise.

  • Compressed sensing is a signal processing technique for efficiently acquiring and reconstructing in and under Nyquist rate representation. Generally, the measurement prediction usually works well with a small block while the quality of recovery is known to be better with a large block. In order to overcome this dilemma, conventional research works use a structural measurement matrix with which compressed sensing is done in a small block size but recovery is performed in a large block size. In this way, both prediction and recovery are made to be improved at same time. However, the conventional researches did not compare the performances of the structural measurement matrix, affected by the block size. In this paper, by expanding a structural measurement matrix of conventional works, their performances are compared with different block sizes. Experimental results show that a structural measurement matrix with $4{\times}4$ Hadamard transform matrix provides superior performance in block size 4.

  • In transmitting compressed video bit-stream over Internet, packet loss causes error propagation in both spatial and temporal domain, which in turn leads to severe degradation in image quality. In this paper, a new approach for the recovery of lost or erroneous Motion Vector(MV)s by classifying the movements of neighboring blocks by their homogeneity is proposed. MVs of neighboring blocks are classified according to the direction of MVs and a representative value for each class is determined to obtain the candidate MV set. By computing the distortion of the candidates, a MV with the minimum distortion is selected. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits better performance in many cases than existing methods.

  • Compressive sensing has proved that a signal can be restored from less samples than the Nyquist rate. Reducing the required data rate is essential for a variety of fields including compression, transmission, and storage. It has been made lots of attempt to apply the compressive sensing theory into data intensive fields, such as image processing which needs to cover 4K and 8K pictures. In this paper, an image acquisition algorithm based on compressive sensing is proposed. It combines DCT, which can compact the energy of a image into a few coefficients, and the Noiselet transform, which is incoherent with DCT. The DCT coefficients represent the coarse structure of the images while the Noiselet information holds the fine details. Performance experiments with several images show that the proposed image acquisition algorithm not only outperforms the previous results, but also improves the reconstruction quality faster as the number of measurements increases.

  • Image obtained by incomplete communication always include noise, blur and distortion, etc. In this paper, we propose and apply the new spatial filter algorithm, called an optimal adaptive generalized stack filter(AGSF), which optimizes adaptive generalized stack filter(AGSF) using neural network weight learning algorithm of back-propagation learning algorithm for improving noise removal and edge preservation rate. AGSF divides into two parts: generalized stack filter(GSF) and adaptive multistage median filter(AMMF), GSF improves the ability of stack filter algorithm and AMMF proposes the improved algorithm for reserving the sharp edge. Applied to neural network theory, the proposed algorithm improves the performance of the AGSF using two weight learning algorithms, such as the least mean absolute(LAM) and least mean square (LMS) algorithms. Simulation results of the proposed filter algorithm are presented and discussed.
