  • The black pine bast scale, $Masucoccus$ $thunbergianae$ (Hemiptera: Margarodidae), is a serious pest of the Japanese black pine, $Pinus$ $thunbergii$, in Korea. The distribution of the black pine bast scale was examined, looking overall at 686 towns (eup), townships (myeon) or neighborhoods (dong). There were Japanese black pine ($Pinus$ $thunbergii$) forests in 91 cities, counties (gun) and borough (gu), in seven provinces and three metropolitan cities during 2010. Black pine bast scale were found in 64.8% of cities or counties or borough (59) in 7 provinces and 3 metropolitan cities, and were distributed in all South Costal regions, Pohang in East Costal region and Boryeong in West Costal region. Chungcheongbukdo, Daejeon and Jeju did not have black pine bast scale. All the gu regions in Busan had black pine bast scale, of which the area with the highest prevalence was Haenam in Jeollanamdo (1.713 crawlers/0.785 $cm^2$). Songji-myeon had the highest occurrence rate (6.36 crawlers/0.785 $cm^2$) from the towns, township and dong. The density of black pine bast scale in twigs was highly correlated with percentage of the sample with scale (Correlation coefficacy=0.89).

  • The dark-winged fungus gnats are one of the most serious fly pests attacking the mushroom cultivation in Korea. They cause severe damage to the artificial sawdust beds used to cultivate mushroom, and reduce the production of button mushroom, Agaricus bisporus, in greenhouses. In this study, we collected nine species of the mushroom flies in order to identify the dominant species of the dark-winged fungus gnat attacking the A. bisporus plantation using the yellow sticky trap in Buyeo-gun, Boryeong-gun, Yongin-si and Chilgok-gun from April to June 2015. The collected samples were used to determine the DNA sequence of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) of the nine different species by DNA barcoding. The sequencing results showed that Lycoriella ingenua was the dominant dark-winged fungus gnat species destroying A. bisporus cultivated on the artificial sawdust beds in Korea.

  • The future mean sea level rise (MSLR) due to climate change in major harbors of Korean Peninsula has been estimated by some statistical methods in this article. Firstly, Mann-Kendall non-parametric trend test to find some trend in the observed long-term tidal data has been performed and also Bayesian change point analysis has been used also to detect the location of change points and their magnitude quantitatively. Especially, in this study, the results from Bayesian change point analysis have been applied to combine 4 future MSLR scenario projections with local MSLR data at 5 tidal gauges. This proposed procedure including Bayesian change point analysis results can improve the step for the determination of starting years of future MLSR scenario projections with 18.6-year lunar node tidal cycle and effectively consider local characteristics at each gauge. The final results by the proposed procedure in this study have shown that the future MSLR in Jeju region (Jeju tidal gauge) is in the largest increment and also the future MSLRs in Western region (Boryeong tidal gauge) and Southern region (Busan tidal gauge) are in the second largest one. Finally, it has been shown that the future MSLRs in Southern region (Yeosu tidal gauge) and Eastern region (Sokcho tidal gauge) seem to be in the relatively smallest growth among 5 gauges.

  • The concrete pavement at Seohae Expressway in Korea has suffered from serious distress, only after four to seven years of construction. The deterioration of ASR has seldom been reported per se in Korea, because the aggregate used for the cement concrete has been considered safe against alkali-silica reaction so far. The purpose of this study is to examine the expansion behavior of aggregates of Korea due to alkali-silica reaction by ASTM C 1260 standard method of the accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT), stereo microscopic analysis, scanning electronic microscope (SEM) analysis, and electron dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) analysis. The results are presented as it follows. The accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT) showed that mica granite and felsite of igneous rocks, aroke, red sandstone and shale of sedimentary rocks, slate of metamorphic rock, and dendrite and quartz of mineral rock showed more expansion than 0.1% at 14 days. But, some sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks expanded more than 0.1% at 28 days even though they were less than 0.1% at 14 days. The mortar bars, which showed more than occurred 0.1% expansion, resulted in cracking on surface. SEM and EDX analysis confirmed that the white gel was a typical reaction product of ASR. The ASR gel in Korea mainly consisted of Silicate (Si) and Potassium (K) from the cement. The crack in the concrete pavement was caused by ASR. It seems that Korea is no longer safe zone against alkali-silica reaction.

  • The ichthyofauna and fish community were studied in Daecheon Stream from April to October 2012. During the survey period a total of 42 species belonging to 13 families were collected. Dominant species by number was Zacco platypus(32.3%) and Tridentiger brevispinis(12.8%). In biomass, the dominant species was Z. platypus(27.7%) and Chelon haematocheilus(11.9%). Also, eight Korean endemic fish species and one endangered species (Rhodeus pseudosericeus) were collected. In addition, two exotic species(Carassius cuvieri and Micropterus salmoides) and migration fish species(Anguila japonica) were observed. Based on the length-weight relationship of Z. platypus, the b value was 3.21~3.29, and the condition factor(K) was 0.89 on average with stable condition. According to similarity analysis, fish communities in Daecheon Stream were divided into three groups; the upper reaches near a reservoir(St. 1), the middle reaches (St. 2 to 4) and the lower reaches near a weir(St. 5). Dominant species at each group were Zacco koreanus(St. 1), Z. platypus(St. 2 to 4) and T. brevispinis(St. 5). This result suggested that artificial structures such as dam and a weir have a marked effect on the distribution of fish communities in Daecheon Stream.

  • The objective of this study was to find out the stable formulation of nano-emulsion containing high concentration of quercetin and to investigate the effect of an ethanol on the nano-emulsion prepared by POE (30) hydrogenated castor oil (HCO-30)/oil/quercetin/ethanol/water system. Nano-emulsion was prepared using emulsion inversion point (EIP) method as low-energy method plus homogenizer as high-energy method. To evaluate effect of ethanol and other components on the nano-emulsion, physical properties such as droplet size, morphology, and size distribution were determined. The optimal quercetin concentration was 0.2 % on the nano-emulsion. The droplet diameter was below 300 nm at the HCO-30 concentration below 2.00 %. Nano-emmulsion containing 4.75 % HCO-30 was the most stable and its mean droplet size was 172.40 nm. Finally, the size of nano-emulsion containing 4.00 % ethanol was 128.15 nm and size distribution was also narrow. The results showed that the breakdown process of this nano-emulsion could be attributed to Ostwald ripening. This study about effect of ethanol on the nano-emulsion showed that loading capacity of drug could be increased by using a small amount of ethanol. As prepared stable nano-emulsion, this study showed that these results could be applied to pharmaceutics, cosmetic including skin-care products, perfume and etc.

  • 현재 남한의 지열류량 측정값으로는 총 363개 지점의 자료가 측정 및 수집되어 있다. 이것은 Mizutani et at.

  • Natural habitats of weedy melons were distributed on the islands along and on the west and south coasts of Korean peninsula including Boryeong, Seosan (Taean), Seocheon, Okgu, Buan, Gochang, Yeonggwang, Muan, Shinan, Haenam, Jindo, Wando, Goheung, Yeocheon, Hadong, Namhae, Goseong, Tongyeong, Geoje, and Jeju islands including Jeju city, Bukjeju-gun and Nam Jeju-gun. Weedy melons were found growing wildly in or around the cultivated lands in these regions. Natural habitats of weedy melons were in and around the cultivated lands. Weedy melon plants were found most often in soybean fields, followed by fields of mungbean, sweet potato, pepper, sesame, cotton, and peanuts. The plants were also found growing wild in foxtail millet fields, rice paddy levees along the streams, upland field edges, watermelon fields, corn fields, vegetable gardens near farmhouse, orange fields, compost piles, fallow fields, roadside and home gardens. They inhabited in sunny and a little dry spaces in relatively low-height crop plant fields in general. The time of fruit maturity was from early July to late October with the most frequency in September according to post survey answer. Fruits dropped off from the fruit stalk when matured. This phenomenon was thought beneficial for perpetuation in the wild. The fruits were being used commonly for food and toys for children. It was thought that weedy melons were perpetuating through the cycle of human and animal feeding of the fruits, human and animal droppings, often mixed in compost, and application of the compost to crop fields by human.
