  • In this paper, we propose a method for construction of robust 3D statistical shape model in the mandible CT datasets. Our method consists of following four steps. First, we decompose a 3D input shape Into patches. Second, to generate a corresponding shape of a floating shape, all shapes in the training set are parameterized onto a disk similar to the patch topology. Third, we generate the corresponding shape by one-to-one mapping between the reference and the floating shapes. We solve the problem failed to generate the corresponding points near the patch boundary Finally, the corresponding shapes are aligned with the reference shape. Then statistical shape model is generated by principle component analysis. To evaluate the accuracy of our 3D statistical shape model of the mandible, we perform visual inspection and similarity measure using average distance difference between the floating and the corresponding shapes. In addition, we measure the compactness of statistical shape model using the modes of variation. Experimental results show that our 3D statistical shape model generated by the mandible CT datasets with various characteristics has a high similarity between the floating and corresponding shapes and is represented by the small number of modes.

  • Tilt rotor aircraft is a multi-configuration airplane which has three independent flight modes; helicopter, conversion, and aiplane. The control surface mixer resign is reqctired to generate and distribute efficient control forces and moments in each flight mode. In the conversion mode, the thrust vector is changed from helicopter mode to airplane, therefore the thrust vector makes undesired forces and moments which affect on pitch, roll and yaw dynamics. This paper describes the design results of control surface mixer design which minimize the undesired forces and moments due to nacelles tilting angle change for 4O% scaled model.

  • The paper describes a theoretical study on the flexural vibration of an elastic flat bar with periodically nonuniform material properties. The approximate solution of the natura1 frequency and mode shape has been obtained using the perturbation technique for sinusoidal modulation of the flexural rigidify and mass density. The numerical solution obtained by using the finite element method verifies the trend of the approximate solution. It appears that distributed vibrations exist in the low modes, and this approach can be extended to the vibration analysis of the p1ate in the flat panel speaker.

  • This paper discusses the test procedure, instrumentation, verification methodology and the results of the ground vibration test(GVT) performed on the KF-16D aircraft to estimate experimentally dynamic characteristics of the aircraft. The modal tests for 7 external store configurations were conducted to estimate effects of external stores on the aircraft vibration modes. To emulate free-free boundary conditions the test aircraft was mounted on its landing gear structure with deflated tires during the GVT. The airframe modal tests were done by burst random excitations with 6 to 8 shakers and about 200 accelerometers. Frequency response functions(FRFs) were measured for each test, and the FRFs were reduced and analyzed to identify the dynamic parameters interested. The analyses were carried out in two steps. To extract modal parameters such as, frequencies and damping ratios, the poly-reference least square complex exponential method was used in the time domain. The mode shape coefficients were estimated with the least squares frequency domain method to identify the vibration modes.

  • In this paper, an experimental study on the buckling and postbuckling control of a laminated composite beam with eccentrically embedded SMA wire actuators is performed. For the purpose of enhancing the critical buckling load, buckling control is investigated through the use of reactive moment associated with the shape recovery force of SMA wire actuators. To improve the control authority for the buckling and postbuckling control of the SMA-composite beam, closed-loop control is used. The buckling and postbuckling control behaviours are presented and discussed qualitatively and quantitatively on loaddeflection plots considering the stacking sequence of the laminate, slenderness ratio of the beam and activation conditions of the SMA wire actuators. By maintaining the desired deflection shape with the proper reactive moment, buckling control can be extended to the postbuckling of the SMA-composite beam subjected to an external load.

  • In this paper, described is a research on the modal analysis of small DC motor by finite element method fer the vibration reduction. An impact test is performed to obtain the natural frequencies and modal shapes of DC motor, which valuate the usefulness of the finite element analysis model. From the study, we show that this finite element analysis model can be applicable for designing a new motor with improvement in vibration characteristics. As an example, a shape modification of DC motor is performed and its vibration characteristics is discussed in comparison with those of original shape.

  • In this study, experimental vibration tests are performed on a real full-scale railway steel plate girder bridge, which resides in open-space environments. Using experimental modal analysis techniques, the modal parameters of the railway steel plate girder bridge yielded by the modal testing of the impact hammer are compared and investigated with the natural frequencies and mode shapes obtained by finite element analysis. This work focuses on the application of model updating techniques to measured experimental data and output-only data from an analytical vibration study that takes into account various geometric and material properties of the bridge members. A finite element model of the railway bridge structure is used to verify the modal experimental results. It is subsequently updated using the corresponding modal identification technique. The basic database is provided to evaluate damage, which can be determined based on the changes in the element properties, resulting from the process of updating the finite element model benchmark and experimental data.

  • This paper propose electronic speckle pattern interferometry(ESPI) for reliability evaluation of electronic device. Especially, vibration problem in a fan of air conditioner, motor of washing machine and etc. is important factor to design the devices. But, it is difficult to apply previous method, accelerometer to the devices with complex geometry. ESPI, non-contact measurement technique applies a commercial fan of air conditioner to vibration analysis. Vibration mode shapes, natural frequency and the range of the frequency are decided and compared with that of FEM analysis. In mechanical deign of new product, ESPI adds weak point of previous method to supply effective design information.

  • The radiation property of a Tonpilz transducer is influenced by the structural variables of the transducer. In this study, with respect to a single mode Tonpilz transducer, the radiation patterns were calculated for different head mass geometries of the same effective radiation area. The shapes of the head mass analyzed were the most popular circular, regular triangular, square, regular hexagonal and regular octagonal types, and radiation pattern equations were derived for each of the head mass shapes. Based on the derived equations, radiation patterns in accordance with the shape and size of the head mass were calculated and the results were compared with each other. Validity of the calculation results were confirmed by means of finite element analysis.

  • This study aimed to understand the internal flow characteristics of a liquid droplet subject to periodic forced vibration. In order to predict the resonance frequency of a droplet, a high-speed camera and macro lens were used to capture internal flow characteristics of a droplet placed on a vibrating hydrophobic surface. Results showed that the droplet assumed a variety of shapes depending on the resonance mode of free droplet, particularly in modes 2, 4, 6, and 8. In addition, the induced internal vortex flow inside the droplet was also observed in each mode. Typically, the induced flow moved upwards along the axis of symmetry and downwards along the surface of the droplet, that is, from the apex to the contact line in modes 2 and 4, after which it broke into a smaller vortex. On the other hand, the large-scale vortex always remained steady in modes 6 and 8. The speed of the flow in mode 4 was always greater than that in mode 2, but those in modes 6 and 8 were similar.
