  • In order to evaluate the effects of functional composts which include elvan, jade and loess, the growth and the yield of Chinese Cabbage and its content of sugar, nitrate and vitamin C were analysed. This study was conducted in lysimeter which was installed in the Experimental Farm of Dankook University. Total fresh weights of Chinese Cabbage were higher in the treatments of compost with mixture of elvan, jade and loess, while numbers of leaf was not increased in those treatments compared to control plot. Leaf length increased more than leaf width, specially in the evlan treatment. Fresh weight of leaf blade and midrib in outer leaf was highest in the plot of elvan treatment among the 6 treatments. Sugar content in the Chinese Cabbage showed lower in the treatment of compost with mixture of elvan, jade and loess compared to control plot. Vitamin content was high in leaf blade compare to those in midrib, and it showed highest value in the treatment of compost with mixture of jade. Nitrate concentration of leaf blade and midrib in the treatment of compost with mixture of loess was lowest at 2,021ppm and 2,235ppm respectively. It shows the effective function of mixture compost with jade, loess and elvan to decrease nitrate content in the Chinese Cabbage.

  • This paper deals with system development which measures 12 channel ECG using medical analog front end(AFE) and discriminates arrythmia through signal analysis. Recently, occurrences of cardiac arrest have been increased. So the need of system that diagnoses an arrythmia which results in cardiac arrest is increasing. There are some drawbacks of conventional 12 channel ECG system that it occupies bulk and consists of complicated circuit. To improve those, we made up the system composed of medical AFE, algorithm for discriminating arrythmia and DSP for signal processing. This system can be monitored 12 channel ECG waveforms and the discriminant analysis result of arrhythmia through 7" LCD and received the input through touch pannel. In this study, we conducted normal operation test about output signal of ECG simulator(normal/abnormal ECG signal) to verify the implemented system and performance evaluation of the optimization process for applying arrhythmia algorithm to an embedded environment.

  • A 74-year-old woman presented at our hospital with hemoptysis. Three months ago, she had endovascular stent-grafting done by a general surgeon for a saccular thoracic aneurysm that was found accidentally following an episode of fever and chills. Despite a lasting fever after the procedure, she was discharged without further treatment and follow-up. She was subsequently admitted to the hospital for evaluation and several exams were performed. Chest CT scans and an esophagoscopy identified an aorto-esophageal fistula at the level of the aorta that was covered by a previous stent-graft. After extensive administration of antibiotics, surgery was done - esophagectomy, cervical esophago-gastrostomy and replacement of the thoracic aorta. She was later discharged uneventfully.

  • Aortocaval fistula is a rare complication of abdominal aortic aneurysm, involving less than $1\%$ of all abdominal aortic aneurysms. A 64-years old man with a long history of hypertension and abdominal aortic aneurysm had chest pain, dyspnea, epigastric discomfort and palpable abdominal pulsating mass. Physical examination revealed hypotension with a systolic blood pressure of 70 mmHg, a large pulsatile mass and a systolic abdominal bruit. Laboratory data revealed a hemoglobin values of 11.0 g/dL, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) value of 5 mg/dL, and creatine value of $2.5 mg\%$. Abdominal Angio CT showed a 10cm infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm with dilatation of the IVC and aortocaval fistula from the aortic aneurysm, which was confirmed at emergency surgery. When the aneurysm was opened and the thrombus was removed, a 1 cm communication was identified between the aorta and IVC. This was controlled with Foley catheters ballooning, and the fistula was closed by continuous suture placed outside the aneurysm. A bifurcated aorto-iliac graft was used to restore arterial continuity. The patient was discharged home after uncomplicated postoperative course.

  • Quartz veins from the Jukwangri area of Hwawon-myeon are epithermal quartz veins that are filling the NW or NE-trending faults within Precambrian metasedimentary rocks. Based on their prolongation and ore grades, No. 1 quartz vein can be traced for about 200 m and varies 0.1 to 3 m in thickness. Mineralization of No. 1 quartz vein can be divided into hypogene and supergene stages. Hypogene stage is associated with hydrothermal alteration minerals(phyllic and argillic zones) such as illite, sericite and sulfides such as pyrite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite. chalcopyrite, galena, argentian tetrahedrite. Supergene stage is composed of Fe-Mn oxide, Zn-Fe oxide and Pb oxide. Fluid inclusion data indicate that homogenization temperature and salinity of hypogene stage range from 187 to $306^{\circ}C$ and ken 0.0 to 6.2 wt.% eq. NaCl, respectively. They suggest that ore forming fluids were progressively cooled and diluted from mixing with meteoric water. Oxygen($-4.1{\sim}4.1%o$) and hydrogen($-107{\sim}-88%o$) isotope com-positions indicated that hydrothermal fluids were derived from meteoric and evolved by progressive mixing with meteoric water during mineralization.

  • Purpose : The aim of the present study was to ascertain whether the increase of carotid intima-media thickeness(cIMT) as one of premature pathologic changes of atherosclerosis, was present in obese children compared to normal weight children. Methods : The obese group consisted of 21 obese/overweight(body mass index(BMI) above 85 percentile of age, sex standards) children and the control group of 11 normal weight children. None of the children had any chronic illnesses or previous medication history. We investigated the age, sex, height, weight, and systolic/diastolic blood pressure. We measured cIMT by ultrasonogram. In 19 of the obese group, we tested the serum glucose level, liver transaminase level, and cholesterol level etc. Results : The increase of cIMT in obese group did not achieved statistical significance(obese group vs. control group; 0.42 vs. 0.40 mm, P=0.0592). In addition, cIMT showed no significant correlation with any physical/laboratory variables including BMI(P=0.0585). Conclusion : To our knowledge, this is the first study to measure the cIMT in Korean children. Though the results approached statistical significance, we could not prove an increase of cIMT in obese children or an association between cIMT and BMI, due to the study's small sample size. In the future, larger and more extensive trials are needed.

  • From August 1992 to July 1996, 63 consecutive patients underwent coronary artery bypass surgery. The mean age of these patient was 57 years(range form 30 to 71years). There were 44 men and 19 women. Preoperative 12 patients had stable angina pectoris and 23 patients were unstable angina pectoris. 8 patients had previous myocardial infarctation history and emergency or urgent myocardial revascularization were performed in 9 cases. In the risk factors of coronary atherosclerosis, 25 patients(40%) were hypercholesterolemia, 38 patients(60%) have smoking history and 19 patients(30%) have hypertension history. In the patterns of disease, 9 patients were single vessel disease, 18 patients were two vessele disease and 33 patients were three vessel disease. We performed total 284 distal anastomosis(mean 3.5 anastomosis per patient) and performed one case of ascending aorta graft interposition, two cases of mitral valve replacement, one case of aortic valve replacement, one case of ventricular septal defect repair and one case of atrial septal defect repair and the mean aortic cross clamp time was 115.3 minutes. The common complications were arrhythmia(7cases), wound infection(5cases), perioperative myocardial infarction(4cases), reoperation for bleeding control(4cases) and stroke(4cases). There were six hospital deaths due to low cardiac output syndrome, ventricular arrhythmia and respiratory failure. In the evaluation of operative risk factors, preoperative intravenous nitroglycerin requirement and prolonged aortic cross clamp tirne(>2hours) were found to be predective factor of morbidity and old age(>65years) was found to be predective factor of mortality.

  • Carotid artery stenting (CAS) has emerged as an alternative treatment for carotid stenosis in patients poorly suited for endarterectomy. Intracerebral hemorrhage following carotid revascularization (endarterectomy, angioplasty, artery stenting) is rare and thought to be related to reperfusion injury in most cases. Early experience suggests an increased incidence of hemorrhage following CAS as compared to endarterectomy. In this study, data were obtained through a case report on an 80-year-old male patient with cerebral infarction. The 80-year-old hypertensive man developed sudden monoparesis in the left arm. He underwent CAS for 90% stenosis of the left proximal internal carotid artery. Brain CT after procedure showed acute hematoma with left posterior cerebral artery territorial hemorrhage, including the upper thalamus with extended intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). Since this hemorrhage occurred in vascular territory unlikely to have been supplied by the treated artery, this case suggests that the mechanism of intracerebral hemorrhage following CAS may in some cases be different from hyperperfusion hemorrhage classically described following endarterectomy.

  • Quartz veins from the Hwawon area are an epithermal quartz vein that is filling the fault zone within Precambrian metasedimentary rocks and Jurassic granite. Mineralization can be divided into hypogene and supergene stages. Hypogene stage is associated with hydrothermal alteration minerals(propylitic and argillic zones) such as epidote, chlorite, illite, sericite and sulfides such as pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, bornite, cubanite, argentian tetrahedrite, Pb-Ag-S system and Pb-Te-S system. Supergene stage is composed of Fe-Mn oxide, Zn-Fe oxide and Pb oxide. Fluid inclusion data indicate that homogenization temperatures and salinity of hypogene stage range from $291.2^{\circ}C$ to $397.3^{\circ}C$ and from 0.0 to 9.3 wt.% eq. NaCl, respectively. It suggests that ore forming fluids were cooled and diluted with the mixing of meteoric water. Oxygen($-0.7{\sim}3.5%_{\circ}$(white quartz: $-0.7{\sim}3.5%_{\circ}$, transparent quartz: $2.4%_{\circ}$)) and hydrogen($-70{\sim}55%_{\circ}$(white quartz: $-70{\sim}55%_{\circ}$, transparent quartz: $-62%_{\circ}$)) isotopic composition indicates that hydrothermal fluids were derived from magmatic and evolved by mixing with meteoric water during mineralization.
