The study is carried out to survey the proper management and to propose an eco - friendly separation system through efficient screening and resource recovery of excavated materials containing waste from various excavating fields such as reconstruction of landfill sites for reuse, reclamation of unsanitary landfill and residential land development of waste dumping sites. The current status and screening process and analytical characteristics of the excavated materials containing waste were reviewed. Through the analysis of the samples such as separated combustibles, recyclable soils and residues collected from the on-site visits we were able to understand the characteristics of separated materials and excavated materials containing waste such as calorific value, elementary composition, TOC, foreign material content and LOI. It has been found that elimination of the moisture of excavations, removal of attached soil from the surfaces of the excavated combustibles and the quantitative supply method of the input devices are the main operating factors as essential factors for the optimal separation of excavated materials containing waste. For efficient management and recycling of excavated materials containing, it is necessary to set criteria of ash content in separated combustibles and criteria organic matter content in separated soils.
This study was conducted to evaluate air injection mode on stabilization of landfill gas and to predict the time for landfill mining. It took 8 times longer for pulse aeration to get to aerobic condition, compared to continuous aeration. It was evaluated that continuous aeration mode is more preferable than pulse mode for rapid air exchange in landfill mining. High correlation ($r^2$ = 0.95) was found between continuous aeration time and time to maintain aerobic condition when $0.2m^3/min$ of air was continuously injected and stopped. The aerobic condition ($CH_4$ < 5%) was maintained for 1.5 times longer than aeration time.

Anaerobic decomposition of municipal solid waste (MSW) had potential adverse impacts such as the production of methane and long-term post closure on human health and the environment. It was demonstrated that aerobic degradation of MSW resulted in the reduction of a methane yield and the enhancement of stabilization of MSW. Excavated solid wastes were both aerobically and anaerobically treated in order to evaluate the effects of air injection on the stabilization of landfill site. The municipal solid waste (MSW) samples were excavated from a 10-year old landfill (operation period: 1991. 11~1994. 11), Jeonju, Korea. Excavated municipal solid wastes are primarily composed of soils and vinyl/plastics. For the two aerobic simulated lysimeters, the levels of $O_2$ ranged 1.6~23.1% and the levels of $CO_2$ ranged 1.5~15.1%, which confirmed the aerobic decomposition. Aeration did prevent methane formation. For the anaerobic simulated lysimeter, the $CO_2$ rose as $O_2$ was consumed and low levels of CH4 were produced. The pH levels ranged from 7.7 to 8.9 for anaerobic lysimeter and from 7.3 to 8.5 for aerobic lysimeters. As expected, aerobic treatment proved to enhance the removal of biodegradable materials in the excavated solid wastes when monitoring the concentration of BOD, COD, $NH_4-N$, and $NO_3-N$ in the leachate.
The purpose of this study was to estimate the removal potential of landfill gases during landfill mining project. Air injection mode and landfill gas extraction mode were tested. A mode that air injected at one injection well and landfill gas extracted at another extraction well at the same time was also tested to compare. The flow rates of all modes were the same as 15$\textrm{km}^2$/min. Air injection mode was the most effective in removing $CH_4$. Air injection/extraction mode didn't improve the effectiveness of removing CH$_4$compared with air injection mode. Air injection mode were more advantageous than air injection/extraction mode in respect to energy consumption because that of air injection/extraction mode were doubled.

Recently, detections of huge amount of wastes in the unsanitary landfills at a residential development sites were reported. Because the sites were the residential development sites, all landfilled wastes should be removed for the constructions. Therefore the way that the unsanitary landfills were excavated and then the wastes were sorted into three categories such as soils, noncombustibles, and combustibles was selected as the best method. Soils and noncombustibles could be recycled in the sites and combustibles could be compacted and be relandfilled in a smaller area.

In the stage of aftercare in waste landfill management, it is very difficult to estimate the decomposition of landfill waste by excavation which damages the low permeability layer. This study developed the method to analyze the amount of landfill waste degraded bio-chemically as the types of leachate and gas, and applied the method to Nanjido landfill(NL). Application result showed that 70% of high biodegradable waste in NL was transformed to gas and leachate by 2000. Also this study suggested that the transformed portions of waste name for "Decomposition Index" at that time and the proposed method must be modified according to the biological condition of waste degradation.

Landfill and lysimeter experiments were conducted to estimate the optimum air injection method for the degradation of waste in landfill and the pre-stabilization. Continuous injection with low pressure and quantity can be effective for pre-stabilization of old landfill due to the lower contents of volatile solids in landfill. Air injection and landfill gas (LFG)extraction showed that the SVE (Soil Vapor Extraction) effect by air ventilation was more significant than the biodegradation of organics. Theses results suggested that they could accelerate the biological stabilization of organic waste in landfills. It is also expected that they would reduce the problems including gas emission during the landfill mining, separation and/or transportation to such levels that might be discharged directly to the atmosphere or with minimal treatment, if required.
Development of underground space is conducted for various useful facility and underground structures and deep excavation technology for reclaimed area has been researched and developed. The seepage flow and behavior of phreatic line in reclaimed area was predominated by transient flow caused by tidal action. Also the soil-water characteristic relation is most important factor for transient flow analysis, therefore the research about the soil-water characteristic is strongly required. In this paper, laboratory tests (pressure cell, desiccator, and tensiometer test) and theoretical analysis were performed to investigate the soil-water characteristic such as air-entry value, metric suction, and residual water content. And the feasibility of prediction method for soil-water characteristic are presented by transient seepage analysis and comparison between analysis results and in-situ measured seepage flux in LNG TK-00 storage tank. Based on the result of laboratory and theoretical analysis, Fredlund and Xing's method provide to work out well for reclaimed ground soils. Also, the transient analysis result is more reasonable and effective for design of deep excavation work in coastal and reclaimed ground.
Recently, large and deep excavations are increasing. The damage of adjacent structures due to excavation has steadily increased with increasing construction demand. Especially in urban development and poor conditions, the excavation adjacent to the subway structures has caused a lot of problems. This paper was reviewed that the underground excavation and reinforcement of the status process through a case study on the field. And stability analysis through the case study evaluates applicability for reasonable reinforcement method by numerical analysis. As a result, the strata distribution condition of all 16 sites consisted of landfill from the top and distributed in the order of deposits, weathered soils, weak rock from the bottom. Also, when proceeding the excavation adjacent to structures, the location of site and layer conditions have highly effect on the results of the construction. Therefore, this study was applied reinforcement method to protect damage by excavation. Displacement and settlement were within allowable criterion and hence, stability of structure was analyzed as safe.
