  • The quantitative analysis on the pollutants loads (PL) has hardly been carried out and calibration-verification process of the water quality modeling has been conducted under the restricted condition because the observed PL data are not sufficient. In this study, the PLs were measured at the 22 streams and the effluents site in the Masan-Changwon watersheds. The release rates from sediment were also measured at the three points in the Bay. The PLs from the Masan and Changwon cities and from multi-port diffuser(effluents discharge) amount to 80∼90% and 20∼25% of the PL in Chinhae-Masan Bay, respectively. As the amounts of the sediment released pollutants are the same order of the PLs form the watersheds, the pollutants released from the sediment is one of the main factors that might cause the seasonal variation of the water quality, which is degraded in summer and relatively good in winter.

  • In response to anthropogenic global warming due to a buildup greenhouse gas, the effect of the air temperature on water temperature has been noticed and some efforts have been made to build an air/water temperature relationship at the Masan Bay area by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries (MOMAF). As a result of analyzing the auto- and cross-correlation coefficient between air/water temperature, high correlation $(\sim0.9)$ is shown and the correlation coefficient of air temperature is higher than that of water temperature at the lag time less than approximately 10 days. Separate functions are fitted to the air/water relationship at the Masan Bay to take hysteresis into account. The slopes of the straight line for the rising limb are 0.829 and 0.774 for MA1 and MA2 station respectively, while 1.385 and 1.444 ($\sim1.75$ times larger) for the falling limb. Consequently, the seasonal hysteresis should be considered in order to determine an air/water relationship and accurately estimate the water temperature using the air temperature at Masan Bay.

  • A large amount 2.1×106 ㎥ of the polluted sediment was dredged from the Masan Bay and deposited in Gapo confined area, Masan. The dissolved metal concentrations of seawater in the dumping site (Gapo area) were observed during one tidal cycle and compared with those of seawater obtained from Jinhae Bay. The sediment was evaluated as from Non polluted to Moderately polluted by USEPA standards. It was judged that toxicological effects of sediment analyzed ranged from ERL to ERM with copper and zinc, and ERL with cadmium, chrome, lead, and nickel by the Adverse Biological Effects. The pollutant concentration was low in surface sediment compared to deeper sediment since the sediments with relatively low concentrations of pollutant were dumped to the surface. The pollutant concentration was low in surface sediment compared to deeper sediment since the sediments with relatively low concentrations of pollutant were dumped to the surface. The benthic organisms in Gapo area had higher concentrations of trace metals (Oyster: Zn 238.96, Cu 5.29 ㎍/g wet wt., Clam: Zn 17.71, Cu 1.00 ㎍/g wet wt., Mussel. Zn 187.98, Pb 0.28, Cr 0.15, Mn 4.23, Sr 1.45 and Fe 100.33 ㎍/g wet wt.) compared to outside of dumping site. However, the trace metal level in the bivalves was less than the NFPQIS (National Fisheries Products Quality Inspection Service) standard.

  • To study the effect of wastewater from the chemical fertilizer plant on water quality in Jinhae Bay, a snrvey was conducted from February to December in 1972. Among the various factors in this survey, distribution of phosphate was significantly high as compared with out side of the Bay. The concentration of phosphate was highest in Hengam Bay where the chemical fertilizer plant was located and it diffused to whole area of the Bay gradually. At the station 28 mean value of phosphate was above tenfold in comparison with that of 1967 when the fertilizer plant was constructed. On the other hand, in Geoje Bay, the center of oyster culture, phosphate concentration was lower than out side of the Bay.

  • Masan Bay is infamous for its severe eutrophication, exemplified by frequent red tide incidences and anoxic conditions. We carried out daily observations for 16 days at one site immediately after the summer rainy season in 1988 on the basis that shorter observation intervals be necessary to observe a process with high turnover rate. in spite of the relatively short survey period, we could observe dramatic changes in abundance and composition of the phytoplankton populations. Cell densities and chlorophyll concentrations changed in the magnitude of 70 and 10 times, respectively, Skeletonema costatum, a diatom species, dominated the first peak of phytoplankton biomass and was followed by Prorocentrum minimum, a dinoflagellate species, which occurred dominantly in the second peak after about a week, form the viewpoint of time scale, we suggest that at least a weekly sampling might be appropriate in complex coastal environments as Masan Bay. While stratification enabled high production in the surface layer, it hindered the transport of silicate from bottom to the surface, which in turn limited the prolonged growth of diatoms. Ensued second peaks of silicate and diatom abundance in the surface layer suggest periodic flux of silicate from bottom across the discontinuity driven by tidal currents.

  • In order to investigate the formation of a shallow water front and its relation to water quality distributions, oceanographic measurements were made, and the numerical computations of the Simpson-Hunter stratification parameter log(H/U$^3$) were performed. It is shown from satellite image and hydrographic data that the shallow water front is formed near the northern Kaduk channel, and the stratification parameter log(H/U$^3$) near the front is in a range of 2.0-2.5. Measured COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) concentrations in offshore region of the front and in the western part of the bay are below 2.0 mg/1. whereas the concentrations in Masan Bay located in the northern inside of the frontal zone are high as 3.0-5.5 mg/1. COD concentrations decrease gradually from Masan Bay toward the offshore due to the dilution by strong water mixing. Anoxic and hypoxic water masses at the bottom layer in summcr occur in the western part of Chinhae Bay and in Masan Bay, and DO (Dissolved Oxygen) concentrations become low with increasing the stratification parameter. DO concentrations outside the front are more than about 4.0 mg/1, whereas the concentrations inside the front are low. The shallow water front plays a significant role for material transport from coastal area to oceanic area, and the frontal region seems to be important physical and chemical boundaries.

  • A total of 18 surface sediments within the special conservation zone in the Masan Bay were analyzed to investigate the spatial distribution and polluted pathway of polybrominated diphenyl ehters(PBDEs). Twenty-two PBDE congeners were detected and brominated diphenyl ether-209 (BDE-209) among them was predominant. The concentrations of BDE-209 and ${\Sigma}_{21}$PBDEs (sum of 21 PBDE congeners without BDE-209) ranged from 2.32 to 64.2 ng/g and from 0.72 to 8.24 ng/g, respectively. The spatial distribution of both BDE-209 and ${\Sigma}_{21}$PBDEs showed a negative gradient from the inner to the outer Bay, indicating that the source of PBDEs might be mainly located inside the Bay such as streams and an effluent of wastewater treatment plants. It was seemed likely that the major parameters determining levels of PBDEs in the Masan Bay were the distance discharging from their sources as well as the characteristics and movement of sediments due to the flow of sea water.

  • Concentrations of selected heavy metals (Al, Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, As and Cd) in surface sediments from 96 sites in Masan and Jinhae Bay were studied in order to understand metal contamination. Results show that the surface sediments were mainly enriched by Cu (18-294 ppm), Zn (67-568 ppm), Pb (10-120 ppm) and Cd (0.2-3.5 ppm). The coastal zone of Masan Bay was significantly more contaminated than the non-coastal zone, and spatial distribution pattern suggested additional sources of heavy metal input in the coastal area. The enrichment ratio and geoaccumulation index ($I_{geo}$) have been calculated and the relative contamination levels assessed in the study area. The enrichment ratios of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd in Masan Bay have been observed to be relatively high. $I_{geo}$ results reveal that the study area is not contaminated with respect to Fe, Mn, Cr and Ni; moderately to strongly contaminated with Cu, Zn and Pb; and strongly to strong contaminated with Cd. The high contents of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd in the study area result from anthropogenic activities in the catchment area. Based on the eight different sediment quality guideline values from USA (ERL, ERM), Canada (TEL, PEL), Australia/New Zealand (ISQG-high, ISQG-low) and Hong Kong (ISQV-low, ISQV-high), sediment quality of Masan and Jinhae Bay was also assessed and characterized.

  • Various types of iron were determined in 5 meters interval from surface to bottom layers in Yeongil Bay water of Korea, late October 1973. The contents of every type of iron decreased outward from the inner part to the entrance of the bay. But there was not any difference in iron contents among the water masses. Particulate iron and ferric iron were lower in the entrance and central parts than in the inner parts of the bay. It seemed to be caused by turbidity. The concentration of soluble iron showed higher value at the area of entrance of harbour than those of any other stations. It suggests that there may be the origin of pollutants.
