  • Java is a promising runtime environment for embedded systems because it has many advantages such as platform independence, high security and support for multi-threading. One of the most famous Java run-time environments, Sun's ($PersonalJave^{TM}$) is based on Truffle architecture, which enables programmers to design various GUIs easily. For this reason, it has been ported to various embedded systems such as set-top boxes and personal digital assistants(PDA's). Basically, Truffle uses heavy-weight window managers such as Microsoft vVin32 API and X-Window. However, those window managers are not adequate for embedded systems because they require a large amount of memory and disk space. To come up with the requirements of embedded systems, we adopt Microwindows as the platform graphic system for Personal] ava A WT onto Embedded Linux. Although Microwindows is a light-weight window manager, it provides as powerful API as traditional window managers. Because Microwindows does not require any support from other graphics systems, it can be easily ported to various platforms. In addition, it is an open source code software. Therefore, we can easily modify and extend it as needed. In this paper, we implement Personal]ava A WT using Microwindows on embedded Linux and prove the efficiency of our approach.

  • Real-time support of embedded OS is not optional, but essential in contemporary embedded systems. In order to achieve these system#s real-time property, it is crucial that schedulability analysis for tasks having its property have been accomplished before system execution. Acquiring Worst-Case Execution Time(WCET) of task is a core part of schedulability analysis. Because traditional WCET tools analyze only its estimation of application task(i.e. program), it is not considered that application tasks are affected by scheduling primitives(e.g. scheduler, interrupt service routine, etc.) of OS when it schedules them. In this paper, we design and implement WCET analysis tool which deliberates on scheduling primitives of system using embedded Linux widely used in embedded OSes. This tool can estimate either WCET of normal application programs or corresponding primitives which have an influence on schduling property in embedded Linux kernel. Therefore, precision of estimation about schedulability analysis is improved. We develop this tool as Eclipse#s plug-in to work properly in any platform and support convenient interface or functionality for user.

  • The speed of present-day network technology exceeds a gigabit and is developing rapidly. When using TCP/IP in these high-speed networks, a high load is incurred in processing TCP/IP protocol in a host CPU. To solve this problem, research has been carried out into TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE). The TOE processes TCP/IP on a network adapter instead of using a host CPU; this reduces the processing burden on the host CPU. In this paper, we developed two software-based TOEs. One is the TOE implementation using an embedded Linux. The other is the TOE implementation using Lightweight TCP/IP (lwIP). The TOE using an embedded Linux did not have the bandwidth more than 62Mbps. To overcome the poor performance of the TOE using an embedded Linux, we ported the lwIP to the embedded system and enhanced the lwIP for the high performance. We eliminated the memory copy overhead of the lwIP. We added a delayed ACK and a TCP Segmentation Offload (TSO) features to the lwIP and modified the default parameters of the lwIP for large data transfer. With the aid of these modifications, the TOE using the modified lwIP shows a bandwidth of 194 Mbps.

  • In wireless networks, the packet loss due to the bit error is misinterpreted as loss due to the congestion state, so TCP congestion control occurs frequently and performance degradation occurs. This degradation also occurs in MPTCP(Multipath TCP), which is an extension protocol of original TCP. In MPTCP, the overall performance of the multipath is degraded. In this paper, we propose a congestion control scheme which measures the bandwidth on each path of MPTCP and reduces the congestion window size by the measured bandwidth when packet loss occurs, in order to solve the MPTCP performance degradation in the wireless environment. We also implemented the proposed congestion control in the Linux kernel and compared it with the original MPTCP in the testbed and real wireless networks. Experimental results show that the proposed congestion control has better throughput performance than original MPTCP congestion control in the wireless environment.

  • The Internet of Things (IoT) has recently been showered with much attention worldwide. Various kinds of devices, communicating with each other in the IoT, demand multiple communication technologies to coexist. In this environment, mobile devices may utilize the vertical handover between different wireless radio interfaces such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, for efficient data transfer. In this paper, an IoT broker is implemented to support the vertical handover, which can also support and manage heterogeneous devices and communication interfaces. The handover is activated based on RSSI, Link Quality values, and real time traffic. The experimental results show that the proposed handover system substantially improves QoS in Bluetooth and reduces power consumption in mobile devices as compared with a system using only Wi-Fi.

  • The increasing demand on the use of multimedia video contents drives more mobile embedded systems to incorporate H.264/AVC decoding capability. An H.264/AVC decoder often requires high computation bandwidth during its decoding phase. Depending upon processor computation capability and multimedia contents complexity, the decoder can be implemented either in hardware or software. However, without a thorough analysis on the Performance and resource requirements, it is difficult to choose a cost-effective methodology of implementing this codec. This paper presents both hardware and software implementation of H.264/AVC decoding subsystem in mobile embedded systems, and quantitatively analyses the performance and resource requirements. It also shows the methodology to identify performance bottleneck in Linux-based mobile embedded systems, which is in turn used to select feasible and efficient implementation methodology.

  • Time-out is one of the basic but important functions in real-time programming. However, the C language used commonly in the embedded real-time systems doesn't support this capability. For this capability, there have been numerous studies on language extension and/or special purpose real-time kernel (or engine). Those require preprocessor or new kernel support. In this paper, we propose a time-out facility supported by a library and some macro functions with a minimum dependency on operating systems. Furthermore, we also provide a structured _within statement, a macro function which makes programming easy. We have implemented this for the LINUX and the DOS environment, and for the POSIX multithread environment as well.

  • The shared disk file systems use a technique known as file system journaling to support recovery of metadata on the SAN(Storage Area Network). In the existing journaling technique, the metadata that is dirtied by one host must be updated to disk space before some hosts access it. The system performance is decreased because the disk access number is increased. In this paper, we describe a new recovery technique using a global buffer to decrease disk I/O. It transmits the dirtied metadata into the other hosts through Fibre Channel network on the SAN instead of disk I/O and supports recovery of a critical data by journaling a data as well as metadata.

  • IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) CoAP (Constrained Application Protocol) protocol is supported communication between sensor or actuator nodes by in a constrained environment, such as small amount of memory, and low power. CoAP and HTTP protocol can convert easily, and can use to monitor or controll the infrastructure utility through low-power sensor and actuator networks in IoT (Internet of Thing) and M2M (Machine-to-Machine) environment. IETF CoRE(Constrained RESTful environments) Working Group proposed CoAP protocol in 2010, and began to standardize it. Recently, CoAP protocol is published RFC (Request for Comments) 7252. In this paper, we design and implement of CoAP protocol for testing the interoperability in heterogeneous operating environments. For this experiment, we developed the CoAP client program based on Windows environment and CoAP server program in Linux environment to test the interoperability.

  • Recently, the demands for real-time service and multimedia data are rapidly increasing. There are significant redundancies between header fields both within the same packet header and in consecutive packets belonging to the same packet stream. But there are many overheads in using the current UDP/IP protocol. Header compression is considered to enhance the transmission efficiency for small size of payload. By sending the static field information only once initially and by utilizing dependencies and predictability for other fields, the header size can be significantly reduced for most packets. This work describes an implementation for header compression of the headers of U/UDP protocols to reduce overhead on Ethernet network. Typical UDP/IP Header packets can be compressed down to 7 bytes and the header compression system is designed and implemented on the Linux environment. Using the designed Header compression system between a server and a client have the advantage of effective data throughput in network.
