An exploratory study on empathy of care service workers : focusing on physical health and workplace spirituality (돌봄서비스 노동자의 공감에 관한 탐색적 연구 : 건강과 일터영성의 영향을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the level of empathy of care service(Elderly, Disabled, Mother & Newborn, Patient, Cancer Patient) workers and health and workplace spirituality. For this purpose, 1,051 care service workers in Busan were surveyed and among them, 861 participant answered and finally without 49 insufficient answers, 814 answers got chosen and analyzed. The results are as follows; First, the higher the level of physical health and work place spirituality, the higher the level of empathy of care service workers. Second, work place spirituality has more influence on the empathy of care service workers than physical health. Finally, there is no statistically significant influence on empathy by characteristics of Sociodemographic, the work environment and work environment risk of the care service workers. This study has concluded that in order to raise the level of empathy of care service workers, it is necessary to improve the physical health and workplace spirituality of care service workers.

Factors Influencing on the Turnover Intention of Female Care Workers (돌봄 여성 노동자의 노동특성이 이직의사에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze and find the relative importance of the factors impacting on the intent to leave among the female care worker's the labor properties, Total 540 questionnaire were distributed and collected from 387 female care workers working at the area of Daegu and GyeongBuk. The logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relative importance among the factors. The results of the study are the followings: Academic ability, lower subjective-evaluation of remuneration, non-business contracts, labor intensity, the relationship between the user, the relationship between the agency providing are factors influencing on the turnover intention. In other words, higher education, lower subjective-evaluation of remuneration, more work than the contract, higher labor intensity, the female care workers have higher probability of turnover intention. Based on the results of the study, this paper suggests some implications as policy and practice.

  • The purposes of this article are to criticize social services, and to consider alternative caring policies and social economic regime to cope with caring blank, in the view point of A. Gorz. According to Gorz, in the value of growth of capitalism, people who are in charge of household affairs and caring work make inroads into the wage market. At this point, as caring blank is occured, social services are emerged. These new aspects are 'Commodification and Rationalization of Private Life'. This article suggests alternative ideas to these aspects. First, universal care giver·breadwinner model, second, the dominance of eco-reason and shorter working hours.

Institutionalization of Care Labor and Differences among Women (돌봄노동의 제도화와 여성들의 차이)

  • This article explores the characteristics of care and care labor which is core keyword of the welfare state and the way of institutionalization of care labor, focusing specially on differences among women. Caring is defined by the expression of morality and labor accompanied by concrete action. But, care labor in the welfare state is defined by "activities involved in caring for the ill, elderly, handicapped and dependent", and I think, that definition is more useful than the narrow one for policy institutionalization. But the latter definition intentionally separates the domestic work from care work. Care labor is considered to be different from the market labor in terms of motivations, but there are some limits in standardization and commercialization of the traits of emotional and moral engagement. Thus, requiring of emotional motivation as one of the job descriptions is not realistic. Welfare state is institutionalizing women's unpaid care work in family through de-familization, and its policy tools are cash benefits and services for care-related, which influence to the female wage worker and fulltime housewife, care receiver and care giver, and polarization of women's class in a very different way. Cash benefits enhances the division of gender labor, polarizes the care laborer and weakens of expansion the care as decent job. The movement of feminist welfare state have a vision of universal service expansion and need the policy list for de-gendering of care labor.

  • Over the past decades, changes in economic, social and demographic structures have pushed the growth of care employment across countries around the world. Women's increasing labor force participation has squeezed the time so far available for unpaid caregiving and led to increased demand for paid care services. Population aging and increasing needs for pre-school education also have contributed to the growth in demand for care services. As a result, care workers now comprise a large and growing segment of the labor force in many countries including South Korea. But, there are not a few problems. Especially, we take underpaid and undervalued care work very seriously. care work has been generally characterized as underpaid and undervalued compared with other work in developed and developing countries alike. This study tries to show current situation of care work and estimate the wage penalty for doing care work in Korea using official employment micro-data and applying propensity matching analysis. Especially, recent expansion of social service is a big step up for Korean Welfare State. But, there are not a few problems. Especially, we take underpaid and undervalued care work very seriously. The Effects of Job Stress and Mental Health of Care Service Workers on Self-diagnosed Oral Symptom in Seoul (서울시 돌봄 서비스 노동자의 직무스트레스와 정신건강이 주관적 구강 증상에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the effect of job stress and mental health factors on the oral symptoms of caring service workers in Seoul. For the research method, a survey was conducted from July 24 to August 6, targeting 150 caring service workers. The survey items were job stress, mental health (physical symptoms, anxiety, and insomnia), and self-diagnosed oral symptoms. The results of the study were as follows. Job stress (p=0.001) had a significant effect on the oral symptoms. In addition, physical symptoms (p<0.001), anxiety symptoms (p<0.001), and insomnia symptoms (p<0.001) all had significant effects on the oral symptoms. Among the risk factors, physical symptoms had the greatest influence on oral symptoms. In addition, according to the correlation result of job stress, anxiety symptoms, insomnia symptoms, oral symptoms, as job stress increases, physical symptoms (p<0.001), anxiety symptoms (p<0.001), insomnia symptoms (p<0.001), oral symptoms (p<0.01) showed an increasing positive correlation and a statistically significant difference. Physical and psychological labor power is greatly exhausted by care service workers performing tasks that require physical and mental care for those who are being cared for. Therefore, there is a need for systematic expansion measures for the mental health of workers and the introduction of customized oral health education programs to improve oral health because improved health and oral health conditions can increase work performance.

Job Characteristics of Care Workers in Elderly Care Voucher Service as a Quality Element (사회서비스 품질 요소로서 제공인력의 근무특성 : 노인돌보미 바우처 사업을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the job characteristics of care workers in elderly care voucher service emphasizing a social service quality management approach. The study sample was composed of randomly-selected 233 centers which dispatched care staffs to clients' home. Descriptive analyses were performed for examining the unique aspects of relationship-based labor of care staffs, and logistic regression analyses were performed for investigating the association between service quality structure and human right violation against staffs. As the first empirical study focusing on staff-side service quality factors, this study found out that human right violation against staffs was mainly influenced by record-keeping and document management capacity of center, risk protection under insurance, compliance of standard contract procedure, and regular supervision. These results suggest particular policy attention should be given to basic protection for and set-up of core activity boundaries of care workers as well as clients-centered rights both for preventing human right violation and improving overall social service quality.

  • With the prolonged spread of the new coronavirus infection worldwide and the entry of the super-aged society, smart health care, which combines IT technology for senior health care and the health care industry, is emerging as a solution to the aging problem. The development of non-face-to-face care services using Ai is on a global trend, not in some countries, and the form of care services for the elderly using AI artificial intelligence technology is changing rapidly. The convenience of AI-based care services for the elderly is expected to be highlighted, and the technology and market are expected to develop significantly. As the number of single-person households is increasing, the shortage of welfare workers for the elderly is emerging as a social issue. It is presented as a vision to solve long-term social problems such as the labor shortage of elderly care workers as well as the advantages of convenient care services using IT technology. Therefore, we would like to propose the development direction of care services for the elderly as a case study of care services for the elderly and a countermeasure against the super-aging age.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the relationship among the degree to provide emotional labor, personal relationship and the intent to stay of female care service workers. Specifically, this study focuses on the mediating effect of the personal relationship (client and agency relation). The path analysis and structural equation modeling analysis were performed on the collected data using SPSS18.0. and AMOS 8.0. And Sobel test conducted for examine the mediating effect. The results are the followings. First, the result of the analysis showed that agency relationship was an indirect factor as the partial mediating effect on relationship between the degree to provide emotional labor and the intent to stay for the care women workers. The result suggests that education utilizing various techniques and strategies to overcome the difficulty accompanied by emotional labor such as communication education and the government try to effort managing and controlling the agency which impact on the labor condition of care workers. Second, the government also tries to provide the trust and collaboration network system which construct a good relationship between the care worker and the agency.

  • Diverse official policies in community are available for caregivers to take care of the elderly in the US and the UK. This study aims to examine the recent changes in government supports based on The Recognize, Assist, Include Support and Engage (RAISE) in the US, and those by Carer Act 2014 in the UK, to take any good lessons for Korean policy. Caregivers will play a new role to develop innovative treatment for patient-centered care. The UK strengthens to provide various efforts for working carers while assuring economic efficiency in labor market with empirical evidence. The major four ways to support carers were developed agreed with the acknowledge of caregiving value and their human right; financial support, direct services for carers, flexible work time, and advocacy. Korean supports policies for carers in long-term care and social welfare will be more effective in community care system if more evidence based policies are prepared.
