  • Objective: Modern medicine offers no efficient way to clear colonization by vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). However, VRE decolonization needs to be cleared as soon as possible to prevent VRE transmission. This study reports six cases in which the duration of vancomycin resistant enterococcus (VRE) colonization was reduced by Bojungikki-tang-gami. Methods: Six inpatients with VRE colonization were administered Bojungikki-tang-gami and continuously followed up with cultures. After three negative stool cultures, the patients were declared cleared of VRE colonization. We recorded the duration of VRE colonization. Results: The duration of VRE colonization in the six patients was a mean of 58 days and a median of 45 days. This was shorter than the duration reported in most previous studies. No side effects were noted. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that Bojungikki-tang-gami might be effective in shortening the duration of VRE colonization.

  • Objective: This study examined the effectiveness of Korean medical treatment for an 81-year-old female patient with pontine infarction complaining of discomfort in both legs. Methods: The patient was hospitalized for 45 days and treated with herbal medicine (mainly Bohyulanshin-tang [補血安神湯], pharmacopuncture, acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and moxibustion). We used the International Restless Legs Scale (IRLS) and Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and checked the duration of the symptoms to evaluate the clinical effects of the treatment. Results: After 45 days of hospitalization, the IRLS score decreased from 33 to 19, with the lowest score of 8 recorded on the twenty-seventh day after discharge. The NRS score and the duration of symptoms also improved, and the treatment effect continued following discharge. Conclusions: This study suggests that Korean medical treatment may be effective for the treatment of restless legs.

  • Objectives: This is a five-year survival case report on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with western medicine and traditional Korean medicine. 44-year old man diagnosed NSCLC IIIB in 2015 went through two months' concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) first, however the cancer did not response. After CCRT he began to take intensive integrative therapy including acupuncture, abdominal moxibustion, wild ginseng pharmacopuncture, herbal medicinal product of ginseng, hyperthermia, Thymosin α1, and mega vitamin C injection for 4 years and 9 months. After three months of intensive treatment, the state of cancer changed first to partial response and then complete response. He finally succeeded in five-year survival without any recurrence or complication in 2020, We suggest that integrative approach including traditional Korean medicine can be a meaningful treatment option for nonoperable NSCLC. Further studies with more cases should be performed to establish proper treatment protocol of integrative medicine for lung cancer.

To evaluate the effect, blood glucose was measured 4 times a day. As measured blood sugar, the frequency of hyperglycemia, changes in fasting blood sugar, changes in postprandial blood sugar, and changes in glucose variability were analyzed. The patient's insulin injection dose change was observed, and HbA1c and glycated albumin were measured. Follow-up was performed for 7 months to observe whether the treatment effect was maintained. ■ Results During treatment, the patient's blood sugar control, glucose variability, and HbA1c were improved, and insulin injection dose was gradually reduced and stopped. HbA1c and glycated albumin levels maintained improvement without insulin injection during the follow-up period. ■ Conclusion This study showed the effect of yeoldahansotang-gami on type 2 diabetes patient.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) according to globus sensation (GS). Methods: We reviewed the clinical records of 29 GERD patients who visited the Department of Digestive Diseases of Kyung Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital from March 1, 2018 to February 28, 2019. The subjects were classified according to the presence of globus sensation, and the two groups were compared in terms of heart rate variability (HRV) and the Ryodoraku results. Results: In comparing the GERD with GS group (GS group) and the GERD without GS group (non-GS group), a significant difference was found in the duration of symptom and several HRV parameters. The duration of the symptom in the GS group was significantly longer than that in the non-GS group. The non-GS group showed a significantly higher value of total power and high frequency than the GS group. Conclusions: The results suggest a significant difference in the stress level between patients with GERD with GS and those without GS. When approaching patients with GERD without GS, their stress status should be considered.
