We conducted a qualitative approach in terms of the reason to and psychological functions of trust and distrust. We also focused on the viewpoint of the relations between trust and distrust whether they are located on the continuum or independent dimensions. A total of 362 subjects participated in this study. The results revealed that the main reason to trust was interpersonal relationship, which indicated they have known each others well. On the other hand, the reason to distrust was based on the judgement of inconsistency between words and deeds, and other's selfish behavior. Therefore, the basis of trust and distrust was not only different but also located on the continuum. In addition, the principal psychological function of trust was a psychological safety, whereas that of distrust was a psychological anxiety.

  • Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has been noted as a significant risk factor for possible suicide attempts. According to the Interpersonal Psychological Theory of Suicide, individuals can attempt suicide after they have acquired the capability to commit it. The acquired capability for suicide can be defined as one's habituated level to the pain and fear associated with suicidal behaviors. This is obtained through constant exposure to painful and provocative events, NSSIs being a prime example. This article reviews prior related studies to determine the extent to which the acquired capability for suicide can be utilized as a predictive factor for fatal suicide attempts following NSSIs. Our review finds a total of 11 studies that directly or indirectly support the claim that the acquired capability for suicide should be considered as a relevant factor linking NSSIs and suicide attempts. Given that NSSIs are most frequently observed in clinical settings, our findings suggest that the acquired capability for suicide will be a useful indicator for clinicians to predict the risk of future suicide attempts by patients.

  • Objective : This study was conducted to evaluate the validity of the Korean Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (K-IIP) with Psychopathic Personality Inventory-Revised (PPI-R) to assess interpersonal problems in Korean criminal offenders with schizophrenia. Methods : The sample consisted of 187 inpatients with schizophrenia who had committed crimes. All participants filled out self-report questionnaires ofPPI-R and K-IIP. Results : The result showed that all scales of K-IIP were correlated highly with the PPI-R total score (r range=0.25-0.65). Correlations with K-IIP scales were highest for Blame Externalization, Rebellious Nonconformity, and Machiavellian Egocentricity scales (r range=0.50-0.66, 0.43-0.64, 0.39-0.58, respectively). All scales of K-IIP exhibited a negative correlation with Social Influences, Stress Immunity, Coldheartedness (C) scale ofPPI-R. Cold/Distant scale ofK-IIP was not correlated with C scale of PPI-R. All scales of K-IIP was highly correlated with PPI-R-factor-2 (r range=0.44-0.71) and negatively correlated with PPI-R-factor-l (r range=-0.03-0.38). Conclusions : Despite of strong correlation between PPI-R total score and K-IIP total score, K-IIP was not correlated with PPI-R-I that represents affective and interpersonal deficits. It suggests K-IIP may not proper for measuring the interpersonal problems of criminal offenders with schizophrenia. It will be needed other assessment scale for measuring the interpersonal problems of psychopathy in criminal schizophrenia.

  • Objective : Any traumatic event can be a risk factor, for subsequent mental disorder. However, childhood trauma, especially in interpersonal nature, is associated with later development of complex symptom patterns. This study examined the role of dissociation as a mediator between childhood trauma and symptom complexity. Methods : A pooled data of 369 psychiatric outpatients at a university-affiliated hospital was analyzed for descriptive statistics, group differences, and bivariate correlation analysis to verify a structural model. The questionnaires included the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised, the Trauma History Screen, the Dissociative Experiences Scale-Taxon, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the Abbreviated PTSD checklist. Results : When other trauma variables were controlled, childhood interpersonal trauma had significant correlation with symptom complexity (r=0.155, p=0.003). Among the paths analyzed, that of childhood interpersonal trauma and dissociation showed the greatest impact on symptom complexity (b=9.34, t=5.75, p<0.001). Based on the significance of the indirect impact, the results suggest a complete mediation impact of dissociation on symptom complexity. Conclusion : This study validated that childhood interpersonal trauma impacts symptom complexity, through the sequential mediating impact of dissociation. Thus, clinicians should understand childhood interpersonal trauma, dissociation, and symptom patterns in a complex and interacting mode, and develop effective pertinent treatment strategies.
