  • With the growth of interest in the UAVs, the study of the UAV collision avoidance is in progress. Lidar, Video camera, laser sensor, and ultrasonic sensor may be utilized for collision avoidance of UAV. In this paper, the characteristics of MB 1230 ultrasonic sensor is analyzed through the experiment. When concurrently using multitudinous ultrasonic sensors, ultrasonic sensors do not generate correct measurement values. To solve ultrasonic sensor interference, sequentially transmitting ultrasonics signal is suggested by using 'Enable' signal input of ultrasonic sensor, so by activating each ultrasonic sensor gradually. This proposed solution is also verified by experimentation.

  • In this paper, we consider a mobile sensor network for monitoring a polluted area where human beings cannot access. Due to the limited sensing range of individual unmanned vehicles, they need to cooperate to achieve an effective sensing coverage and move to a more polluted region. In order to address the limitations of sensing and communication ranges, we propose a hazardous substance monitoring network based on virtual force algorithms, and develop a testbed. In the considered monitoring network, each unmanned vehicle achieves an optimal coverage and move to the highest interest area based on neighboring nodes sensing values and locations. By using experiments based on the developed testbed, we show that the proposed monitoring network can autonomously move toward a more polluted area and obtain a high weighted coverage.

  • With increasing of interest in quad-rotor which has excellent maneuverability recently, a various types of multi-rotor aircraft was developed and commercialized, and there are many kinds of leisure products to be easily operated. In these products, the AR.Drone manufactured by Parrot has an advantage that it is easily operated by user due to the its internal stabilization loop in the on-board computer. Thus it is possible to design the unmanned UAV system easily by using this AR.Drone and its inner loop for the stabilization. For this advantage, KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) has been developing the indoor swarming flight system by using multiple AR.Drones. For this indoor swarming flight, it is necessary that not only the position controller for each AR.Drone, but also the collision avoidance algorithm. Therefore, in this paper, the collision avoidance controller is provided for the swarm flight by using these AR.Drones.

  • This paper presents a distributed task assignment algorithm for the suppression of enemy air defense (SEAD) mission of heterogeneous UAVs, based on the consensus-based bundle algorithm (CBBA). SEAD mission can be modeled as a task assignment problem of multiple UAVs performing multiple air defense targets, and UAVs performing SEAD mission consist of the weasel for destruction of enemy's air defense system and the striker for the battle damage assessment (BDA) or other tasks. In this paper, a distributed task assignment algorithm considering path-planning in presence of terrain obstacle is developed for heterogeneous UAVs, and then it is applied to SEAD mission. Through numerical simulations the performance and the applicability of the proposed method are tested.

  • UAV system has the limitation to allocate enough spectrum bandwidth for the operation of multiple UAVs due to the market expansion. In addition, the communication environment of UAV network varies dynamically due to the UAV's mobility. Thus, to operate the stable UAV system and maximize the transmission data rate, it needs to allocate the resource effectively in the limited bandwidth considering the given network environment. In this paper, we propose the resource allocation algorithm which can maximize the network throughput as well as satisfy the minimum data requirement for the UAV system operation in the given network environment based on TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access). By performance analysis, we show that the proposed algorithm can allocate the resource to satisfy the high network throughput as well as the minimum data requirement in the given network environment.

  • This study proposes a robust formation flight control technique of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) using behavior-based decentralized approach. The behavior-based decentralized method has various advantages because it utilizes information of neighboring UAVs only instead of information of whole UAVs in the formation maneuvering. The controllers in this paper are divided into two methods: first one is based on position and velocity of neighboring UAVs, and the other one is based on position of neighboring UAVs and passivity technique. The proposed controllers assure uniformly ultimate boundedness of closed-loops system under time varying bounded disturbances. Numerical simulations are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Remote Sensing using unmanned aerial vehicles(UAV) can acquire images with higher time resolution and spatial resolution than aerial and satellite remote sensing. However, UAV images are photographed at low altitude and the area covered by one image isrelatively narrow. Therefore multiple images must be processed to monitor large area. Since UAV images are photographed under different exposure conditions, there is difference in brightness values between adjacent images. When images are mosaicked, unnatural seamlines are generated because of the brightness difference. Therefore, in order to generate seamless mosaic image, a radiometric processing for correcting difference in brightness value between images is essential. This paper proposes a relative radiometric calibration and image blending technique. In order to analyze performance of the proposed method, mosaic images of UAV images in agricultural and mountainous areas were generated. As a result, mosaic images with mean brightness difference of 5 and root mean square difference of 7 were avchieved.

  • Unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) operating in the military for various purposes are designed to transmit information collected according to the purpose to GCS(Ground Control System), and to transmit/receive the vehicle's operational control and status information using wireless communication(or datalink). Currently, the military UAV systems in operation in Korea use unique communication methods, protocols, and message structures for each system. Among these, the Division UAV is designed to transmit fixed size TM/TC data repeatedly and the Corps UAV is designed to transmit aperiodic TM/TC data to the variable length of the message-based. In this paper, we analyze the TM/TC data protocol of existing military UAV systems and present data protocol design method which is considered to be more efficient in wireless communication environment applied to equipment under development. And we will discuss issues to be considered for standardization of technology for ensuring interoperability with many UAVs or newly introduced UAV systems.

  • Recently popularized drone technologies have revealed that low-cost small unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) can be a significant threat to prevailing power by operating in group or in swarms. Researchers in many countries have tried to utilize integrated swarm unmanned aerial system(SUAS) in the battlefield. Agency for Defense Development also identified four core technologies in developing SUAS: swarm control, swarm network, swarm information, and swarm collaboration, and the authors started researches on swarm control and network technologies in order to be able to operate vehicle platforms as the first stage. This paper introduces design and integration of SUAS consisting of small fixed-wing UAVs, swarm control and network algorithms, a ground control system, and a launcher, with which swarm control and network technologies have been verified by flight tests. 19 fixed-wing UAVs succeeded in swarm flight in the final flight test for the first time as a domestic research.
