  • EEG(electroencephalogram) are measured to accurately determine the level of sleep in various sleep examinations. In general, measurements are more accurate as the number of sensor channels increases. EEG can interfere with sleep by attaching electrodes to the skin when measuring. It is necessary for self sleep care to select the minimum number of EEG channels that take into account both the user's discomfort and the accuracy of the measurement data. In this paper, we proposed a sleep stage analysis model based on machine learning and conducted experiments for using from one channel to four channels. We obtained estimation accuracy for sleep stage as following 82.28% for one channel, 85.77% for two channels, 80.33% for three channels and 68.87% for four channels. Although the measurement location is limited, the results of this study compare the accuracy according to the number of channels and provide information on the selection of channel numbers in the EEG sleep analysis.

  • This study describes an emotion classification method using two different feature parameters of four-channel EEG signals. One of the parameters is linear prediction coefficients based on AR modelling. Another one is cross-correlation coefficients on frequencies of ${\theta}$, ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$ bands of FFT spectra. Using the linear predictor coefficients and the cross-correlation coefficients of frequencies, the emotion classification test for four emotions, such as anger, sad, joy, and relaxation is performed with an artificial neural network. The results of the two parameters showed that the linear prediction coefficients have produced the better results for emotion classification than the cross-correlation coefficients of FFT spectra.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for human sensibility evaluation using 4-channel EEG signals of the prefrontal and the parietal lobes. The algorithm uses an artificial neural network and the multiple templates. The linear prediction coefficients are used as the feature parameters of human sensibility. Comfortableness and temperature/humidity are evaluated. Many conventional researches have emphasized that a wave of left prefrontal lobe is activated in case of positive sensibility and that of right prefrontal lobe is activated in case of negative sensibility. So the power ratio of n wave is obtained from for computation and the results are compared. The results of the comfortableness evaluation for temperature and humidity showed that the outputs of the proposed algorithm coincided with corresponding sensibilities depending on the task of the temperature and the humidity. The conventional method using a wave is hardly related with comfortableness. And it is also observed that the uncomfortable state due to the high temperature and humidity can be easily changed to the comfortable state by small drop of the temperature and the humidity.

  • Introduction: Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) is used as a way of studying nonlinearity of EEG. In this study, DFA is applied on sleep EEG of normal subjects to look into its nonlinearity in terms of EEG channels and sleep stages. Method: Twelve healthy young subjects (age:$23.8{\pm}2.5$ years old, male:female=7:5) have undergone nocturnal polysomnography (nPSG). EEG from nPSG was classified in terms of its channels and sleep stages and was analyzed by DFA. Scaling exponents (SEs) yielded by DFA were compared using linear mixed model analysis. Results: Scaling exponents (SEs) of sleep EEG were distributed around 1 showing long term temporal correlation and self-similarity. SE of C3 channel was bigger than that of O1 channel. As sleep stage progressed from stage 1 to slow wave sleep, SE increased accordingly. SE of stage REM sleep did not show significant difference when compared with that of stage 1 sleep. Conclusion: SEs of Normal sleep EEG showed nonlinear characteristic with scale-free fluctuation, long-range temporal correlation, self-similarity and self-organized criticality. SE from DFA differentiated sleep stages and EEG channels. It can be a useful tool in the research with sleep EEG.

  • Brainwave-based user authentication technology has advantages such as changeability, shoulder-surfing resistance, and etc. comparing with conventional biometric authentications, fingerprint recognition for instance which are widely used for smart phone and finance user authentication. Despite these advantages, brainwave-based authentication technology has not been used in practice because of the price for EEG (electroencephalography) collecting devices and inconvenience to use those devices. However, according to the development of simple and convenient EEG collecting devices which are portable and communicative by the recent advances in hardware technology, relevant researches have been actively performed. However, according to the experiment based on EEG samples collected by using a single-channel EEG measurement device which is the most simplified one, the authentication accuracy decreases as the number of channels to measure and collect EEG decreases. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze technical problems that need to be solved for practical use of brainwave-based use authentication and propose an incremental elimination method of collected EEG samples for each user to consist a set of EEG samples which are effective to authentication users.

  • In this paper, we presented the results of analysis with data obtained through EEG measurements to confirm the effect of musical stimulus when performing mathematical tasks. While the subject was solving a mathematical task, favorite and unfavorite music classified according to the subject's preference were presented as musical stimulus and the tasks were divided into memorization task and procedure task. The data measured in the EEG experiments was divided into theta waves, SMR waves and mid-beta waves which are the frequency bands related to concentration to compare the relative power spectrum values. In our results, in the case of comparing no music with favorite music and no music with unfavorite music, a significant difference was observed in the several channels, and the average difference was shown in the channels F3 and F4 of the frontal lobe. In that channels, the power was found to be greater when the music was presented than the case where there was no music. Depending on the subject's preference, it was confirmed that favorite music showed greater brain activity than unfavorite music.

  • In daily life, humans get stress very often. Stress is one of the important factors of healthy life and closely related to the quality of life. Too much stress is known to cause hormone imbalance of our body, and it is observed by the brain and bio signals. Based on this, the relationship between brain signal and stress is explored, and brain signal based stress index is proposed in our work. In this study, an EEG measurement device with 32 channels is adopted. However, only two channels (FP1, FP2) are used to this study considering the applicability of the proposed method in real enveironment, and to compare it with the commercial 2 channel EEG device. Frequency domain features are power of each frequency bands, subtraction, addition, or division by each frequency bands. Features in time domain are hurst exponent, correlation dimension, lyapunov exponent, etc. Total 6 subjects are participated in this experiment with English sentence reading task given. Among several candidate features, ${\frac{{\theta}\;power}{mid\;{\beta}\;power}}$ shows the best test performance (70.8%). For future work, we will confirm the results is consistent in low price EEG device.

  • In this study, emotion-classification gathered from users was performed, classification-experiments were then conducted using SVM(Support Vector Machine) and K-means algorithm. Total 15 numbers of channels; CP6, Cz, FC2, T7. PO4, AF3, CP1, CP2, C3, F3, FC6, C4, Oz, T8 and F8 among 32 members of the channels measured were adapted in Brain signals which indicated obvious the classification of emotions in previous researches. To extract emotion, watching DVD and IAPS(International Affective Picture System) which is a way to stimulate with photos were applied and SAM(Self-Assessment Manikin) was used in emotion-classification to users' emotional conditions. The collected users' Brain-wave signals gathered had been pre-processing using FIR filter and artifacts(eye-blink) were then deleted by ICA(independence component Analysis) using. The data pre-processing were conveyed into frequency analysis for feature extraction through FFT. At last, the experiment was conducted suing classification algorithm; Although, K-means extracted 70% of results, SVM showed better accuracy which extracted 71.85% of results. Then, the results of previous researches adapted SVM were comparatively analyzed.

  • We propose a real time user interface that utilizes emotion recognition by physiological signals. To improve the problem that was low accuracy of emotion recognition through the traditional EEG(ElectroEncephaloGram), We developed a physiological signals-based emotion recognition system mixing relative power spectrum values of theta/alpha/beta/gamma EEG waves and autonomic nerve signal ratio of ECG (ElectroCardioGram). We propose both a data map and weight value modification algorithm to recognize six emotions of happy, fear, sad, joy, anger, and hatred. The datamap that stores the user-specific probability value is created and the algorithm updates the weighting to improve the accuracy of emotion recognition corresponding to each EEG channel. Also, as we compared the results of the EEG/ECG bio-singal complex data and single data consisting of EEG, the accuracy went up 23.77%. The proposed interface system with high accuracy will be utillized as a useful interface for controlling the game spaces and smart spaces.
