The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of social work intervention for the family caregivers of the older persons with stroke. Twelve caregivers were assigned to either a treatment group or a control group. The treatment group intervention consisted of 8 weekly, 2-hour sessions which included education, peer and professional support, individual counselling. Wilcoxon test of the pretest and posttest scores of the two groups showed that those in the treatment program experienced significant decrease in caregiving burden and loneliness compared with caregivers who received no intervention. They also experienced increase in self-esteem, self-efficacy in dealing with caregiving tasks, satisfaction with a relationship with the care-receiver, emotional support. Most of these intervention effects were maintained in the 3-month follow-up measurement except loneliness and the caregiver-carereceiver relationship. Caregivers in the treatment group showed overall satisfaction with the program and willingness to continue to attend in the interventions. Based on these findings, implications for social work practice including self-help groups, psychotherapy for the caregivers, expanding social work intervention for the family caregivers of the older persons were discussed.
Purpose: This study was done to identify the degree that perceived social support effects the self esteem of the elderly. Method: A structured questionnaire was administered to 203 elderly subjects from April 2003 to June 2003. The data were analyzed with an SPSS program for escriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, t-test, ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression. Result: The level of social support was moderate; family support received the highest score among sources of support. In types of support, appraisal support was the highest score and material was the lowest. The level of self esteem was also moderate. The score of social support showed a slightly high positive correlation with self esteem. In general characteristics, several variables were significantly related to self esteem. The most powerful predictor of self esteem was material support by family and the variance explained was 19.6%. A combination of material support by family, informational support by relatives, perceived economic status, perceived health status, and having a subject to depend on accounted for 39.8% of the variance in self esteem of the elderly. Conclusion: To increase the self esteem of the elderly, it is necessary to consolidate material support by family.

Purpose: This research was designed as a pre-post experimental study with a nonequivalent control group to verify the effects of meridian exercise on health status, depression and self-esteem in institutionalized elderly people. Method: The research population included 38 participants, 65 years and over, who were assigned to an experimental group (18) or a control group (20). All of the participants were institutionalized in Seoul Data collection was done from October. 2000 to May, 2001 and the experimental treatment for this study, meridian exercise, was done for a total 30 minutes per session for 12 sessions over two weeks. The exercise was developed by a professor of Oriental Medicine and the researchers involved in this study. The data were analyzed using the SPSS PC+ program. Result: There were no significant differences for general characteristics between the two groups. Physical health status, mental-mood health status, depression and self-esteem were low. Differences in the physical health status of the elderly people was higher in the experimental group (t=16.299, p=.000). The effects of the meridian exercise on mental-mood health status, depression, and self-esteem were statistically significant (t= 10.301, p= .000 ; t=15.579, p=.000, t=14.571, p=.000). Conclusion: According to the results, meridian exercise should be used to improve health status, reduce depression and increase self-esteem, and so promote the quality of life for elderly People who must be institutionalized. A study to measure the physiological index in meridian exercise for elderly people is suggested as a method to set up a Korean nursing intervention to enable elderly people to manage their own health.

This study aims to understand realities of senior couple's violence by dividing them into victim and assaulter, and then grasp the degree of the effect of violence on desirable cohabitation. Conjugal violence was divided into emotional, minor physical, severe physical and sexual violence. Mental health was subdivided into depression, stress, aggression and self-esteem. Emotional violence appeared most often at 29.9%, and physical violence was under 3% in the case of being victimized, while emotional violence accounted for 25.4% and physical violence for under 2% in the case of offense. The effect of conjugal violence on mental health was that depression and stress increased significantly although some disparity existed between types of violence. In the circumstances of inflicting violence, the degree of aggression was significantly different in common. In conclusion, conjugal violence has a great influence on couple's mental health though the extent of damage was different depending on the type of violence and whether the person was the victim or attacker. So diverse welfare program should be implemented and activated.
This study is a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest study to determine the effects of a make up program on the self-esteem and anxiety of the elderly female dementia patients. This research was done between April 13th and May 1st, 2009. The subjects were 41 dementia patients in an elderly hospital in Honam Area. Twenty dementia patients in the experimental group got the make up measures during the two week experimental period and twenty one dementia patients in the contrast group didn't get any measure during the two week period. Make up measures were given to the experimental group 10 times for the two week period. This study used the self-esteemscale which was developed by Rosenberg(1965) and was translated and modified by Jeon Pyung Je(1974) into Korean. The anxiety status scale which this study used was developed by Spielberger(1970) and was translated and modified by Kim Jeong Taek(1991) into Korean. Collected data were analyzed with SPSS Win 12.0. T-test and multivariate analysis were done to test the hypothesis. This study also used a method of observation. The results of this study are following. After the two week make up measures, the experimental group had more self esteem and less anxiety status than the contrast group. The differences were statistically significant. The result of the observation also supported the research hypothesis. Based on this result, we suggest the make up program as an appropriate and useful nursing care intervention program for female dementia patients.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a Health Maintenance Program on physical functions and mental health of the elderly in nursing homes. Method: Sixty elderly(over 65 years old) in a randomized control study participated in a 16-week group-based intervention including functional exercises and health education. The participants were divided into 3 groups(Health Maintenance Program Group, Supportive Music Exercise Group, and Control Group) of 20 elderly each. Data was collected from Dec. 1st, 2005 to Mar, 30th, 2006. Physical function of lower body strength was assessed using a 30-second chair test, flexibility was assessed using a sit-and-reach test, and static balance was assessed by the ability to balance on one leg with open and closed eyes. Depression was assessed using the Korean Form of the Geriatric Depression Scale and self esteem was assessed using Rosenberg's Self Esteem Questionnaire. Data was analyzed by Chi-square test, One-way ANOVA, and Repeated measure two factor analysis. Results: A Health Maintenance Program significantly increased muscle strength, flexibility and static balance, but depression and self-esteem scores were not significantly changed. Conclusion: Findings demonstrated that a Health Maintenance Program was more effective on physical function than mental health of the elderly in nursing homes.
