  • This study investigates what older adults give meaning of ageism with relation to their self-identity. The main findings are as follows. The participants' response to daily life ageism is divided in four types: 'denial', 'evasion', 'acceptance', 'problematic proposal', and 'isolation'. In conclusion, this study contributes to understanding ageism in-depth. The findings of this study discover tension and suppression within society regarding ageism from the perspectives of the older participants, and reveal the latent dimension which is not caught with the language.

  • The loss of semantic knowledge and impairments in semantic associations by semantic category is gaining increasing attention, as indicators of early-stage cognitive decline. As such, we assigned semantic association task (SAT) to normal elderly (NE) and those with subjective memory impairment (SMI) or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to examine their performance by semantic subcategories and the differences in error patterns. We found a significant difference in the number of correct response and reaction time under the SAT categories among the three groups, with the highest performance observed in 'function' and the lowest performance in 'superordinate' and 'part/whole'. Moreover, the error frequency was the lowest in NE, followed by those with SMI and MCI, with the latter two groups showing a significant increase in no-response. Our findings demonstrate the varying extent and process of impairments in the semantic network by category over different stages of cognitive decline. Thus, we proposed SAT performance as an indicator to detect and follow-up on cognitive decline in elderly with cognitive disorder.

  • This study investigated the effects of meaning of life and depression on the health-promoting behaviors of community-dwelling elderly people, as well as the effects of community programs on their depression, meaning of life, and health-promoting behaviors. Collected data were analyzed by ANOVA, paired t-test through SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. The demographic characteristics, depression, meaning of life, and health-promoting behaviors of the participants were analyzed using descriptive statistics that calculated real numbers and percentages. The participating in community programs resulted in a decrease in depression(t=2.379, p=.010) and significant increase in meaning of life(t=2.421, p=.009) and health-promoting behaviors(t=2.316, p=.012) and recognized the importance of community role for healthy old age. Based on this, we propose active participation of the community for the health of elderly people and development of programs suitable for the subjects.

As a result of hierarchical regression analysis, the factors affecting the meaningful activities of the elderly were 'resident' in both stages 1(β=-.308, p=.002), 2(β=-.330, p=<.001), and 3(β=-.281, p=<.001), and 'age(β=-.215, p=.026)' in the second stage, indicating that the factors affecting the meaningful activities of the elderly were 'resident' and 'age'. • The notion of independence is currently a focal point in public discourses in relation to the elderly. In most countries, the promotion of independence, not the alleviation of dependence, has been addressed as a priority goal in the formulation of social policies for the elderly and the term of independence is used in policy documents as if it were unproblematic. In most cases, policy documents do not offer a clear definition of independence, but generally the term is interpreted as self-sufficiency and health. Accordingly, in order to promote independence of the elderly, concrete strategies such as employment, social activities, participation, direct payments are being introduced in many advanced countries. This study critically reviews these discourses and strategies, and attempts at developing an understanding of how independence and dependence is constructed in contemporary social policies for the elderly. It is our critical point that we explores the meaning of the independence and dependence from the perspective of the elderly. Findings of this study are as follows: The elderly participated in this study tended to construct the meaning of 'independence' as privacy, self-esteem, autonomy and freedom. They also tended to perceive and interpret, from their perspective, the 'dependence' as a natural law and process, affection among human beings, reward and fruit of their lives, social justice and social responsibility. In this sense current policies for the elderly have not fully reflected the perspective of the elderly. Therefore, it is argued what is important in policy formulations for the elderly is to make efforts to reflect the perspective of the elderly on policy-makings for the elderly in terms of independence and dependence.
