  • The seasonal occurrence trends of the brown-winged green bug, Plautia stali, and the brown malmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, were monitored in sweet persimmon orchards in southern region of Korea using light traps (in 2000 and 2001), and aggregation pheromone traps (methyl (E, E, Z)-2 ,4, 6-decatrienoate)) of P. stali (in 2001). Light trap data showed that H. halys started to occur from the end of June, and reached its peak in early or mid August, while P. stali was mostly attracted to the traps from mid July to late August without any distinct attraction peak. Both species did not occur after September in the persimmon orchards studied. The attraction patterns of both species to aggregation pheromone traps were different from those observed in light traps. Both species were attracted to the pheromone traps from mid May to late August. The peak occurrence of H. halys could not be detected due to low catches. However, the period of peak attraction for P. stali was from late June to late August depending on the geographical locations. The aggregation pheromone traps of P. stali attracted more number of P stali than H. hails, but the light traps showed a reverse pattern. In both species, more females were attracted to the aggregation pheromone traps than males. The difference of attraction patterns between 2 types of traps was discussed in relation to content of soluble tannin in persimmon fruits.

Eleven jamilies and 15 species of Hemiptera, 20 families and 40 species of Coleoptera and 11 families and 42 species of Lepidoptera was collected and identified. Among these, 12 species of Hemiptera, the 21 species of Coleoptera and 22 species of Lepidoptera were first reported in Odaesan. Including these first found insects, 8 families and 36 species of Hemiptera, 26 families and 97 species of Coleoptera, 30 families and 274 species of Lepidoptera are reported from Odaesan. The species inventories for Hemiptera, Coleoptera and Lepidotera were made from present study and previous works.

  • The Samurai wasp, Trissolcus japonicus (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Platygasteridae) is recognized as a solitary parasitoid on eggs of the stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), an economic pest causing severe damage to fruits, in South Korea. The wasp appears to be a potential biological agent of the pest. In addition, T. itoi Ryu and T. nigripedius (Nakagawa) were found to parasitize eggs of Eurydema gebleri Kolenati and Dolycoris baccarum Linnaeus, respectively. Diagnostic characters and photographs are provided for identification, and host records of Korean Trissolcus species are also given.

  • This study was conducted to determine pheromone trap type and height in forecasting populations of R. clavatus in soybean fields using pheromone. The most effective pheromone trap type and height in forecasting populations of R. clavatus were fish trap and 60 cm above ground. Ratio of R. clavatus adults female and male in soybean field was 1.5 to 1 and Piezodorus hybneri was also attracted to the aggregation pheromone trap of R. clavatus. Attractiveness of two stink bug species caught on synthesis pheromone of R. clavatus was surveyed with imported production and synthesized production. Imported pheromone attracted only adult of R. clavatus, but synthesized pheromone attracted both adult of R. clavatus and P. hybneri. Change of population of R. clavatus was observed using pheromone trap and sweeping method in soybean field. Adults of R. clavatus occurred from early August and the population reached its peak in early September when pheromone trap was used. In case of sweeping method, its fluctuation pattern was similar to that of pheromone trap.

  • Jujube tree farms need effective methods of pest control to reduce damage caused by mirid bugs. In this study, we measured the density of mirid bug populations in jujube trees and tested the efficacy of various insecticides. We observed seasonal density patterns, where nymphs were observed from early May to the middle of July; and adults were observed from the end of May to the middle or end of July. Furthermore, we measured the density of two types of mirid bug species, Apolygus spinolae and A. lucorum. Among 45 damaged jujube trees, the dominant species of mirid bugs was A. spinolae (89%). We tested 7 types of insecticides to control mirid bug populations, including pyrifluquinazon, deltamethrin, diazinon, dinotefuran, etofenprox, fenitrothion, and bifenthrin, showing over 80% efficacy. Thus, in this study, we showed that using insecticides was effective for controlling mirid bug populations on jujube trees.

  • This study was carried out to screen the occurrence of insect pest on the organic seed producing field of minor grain germplasms, Pearl millet (Setaria italic L.), Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), and Common millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) in Gangwon-do from 2008 to 2009. The artificial pheromone traps successfully attracted an Oriental corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee) on Pearl millet, but the Army worm, Pseudaletia separata, was not attracted in all of the minor grain fields. The ratio of damaged plants of Oriental corn borer and Army worm were appeared in order with Pearl millet, Common millet, and Sorghum. The morphological diversities of plant bug were shown as four kinds of species, Eastern green stinkbug (Nezara antennata), Brown-marmorated stinkbug (Halyomorpha halys), Sloe bug (Dolycoris baccarum), and Bean bug (Riptortus clavatus), on the organic seed producing field of minor grain. The average occurrence density of Eastern green stinkbug was the highest level in the three kind of minor grains, Pearl millet, Common millet, and Sorghum in 2008 and 2009. The dominant species are the Eastern green stinkbug and the Bean bug in Pearl millet and Common millet. The Sloe bug and the Bean bug possessed the highest population density in Sorghum.

  • The kairomonal activity of the aggregation pheromones of Riptortus clavatus for the egg parasitoid, Gryon japonicum, were investigated in soybean field. The parasitism rate of G. japonicum gradually decreased when the distances between pheromone traps and egg sites were increased from 0 to 15 m. The active distance of pheromone source for parasitoid attraction was estimated to be ca. 15 m. Under field conditions, the parasitoid wasp population peaked during the late August and early September, and the parasitism rate increased when the number of pheromone traps was increased from one to three per $165\;m^2$. However, insecticide-treated plots, the level of parasitism recorded is relatively low. Sex ratios in field populations of G. japonicum were female-biased.

  • Attractiveness of different amounts of methyl (E,E,Z)-2,4,6-decatrienoate, the aggregation pheromone of brown-winged stink bug, Plautia stali (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), was tested using different kinds of dispensers. A lure filled with hexane was used as a control treatment. There were no differences in the attractiveness of the pheromone to P. stali and Halyomorpha halys among dispensers (polyethylene-vial, rubber septum, and polyethylene tube). Traps baited with 7, 20, 40, 50, and 60 mg of pheromone were tested for their attractiveness. For females, the 40 mg trap attracted highest number of P. stali, even though there were no significant differences among pheromone amounts. For males, the 40 and 50 mg traps attracted significantly more bugs than the 7, 20, and 60 mg traps and the control traps. Based on these results, the pheromone dispenser impregnated with 40 mg of pheromone will be practical in monitoring P. stali in the field.

  • In order to estimate the genetic relationships among four taxa of Korean Symplocaceae and their regional populations, RAPDs analysis was performed. The length of the amplified DNA fragments ranged from 150 to 1,900 bp. Ninety-two RAPD bands were scored for 11 primers and the genetic distance was calculated with by Nei-Li's genetic dissimilarity. Deciduous and evergreen groups were clearly separated in the UPGMA analysis. Symplocos coreana was clustered as a distinct group, and S. sawafutagi and S. tanakana were also clustered at specific level, respectively. The RAPD data was useful to cognize the genetic variation and to discuss the relationships among Korean Symplocaceae
