  • Recently, to prevent explosive spalling of high-strength concrete (HSC) members, the usage of nylon fiber instead of polypropylene fiber has increased. Past experimental studies have been conducted to examine the spalling and mechanical properties of HSC with nylon fibers when exposed to elevated temperature. However, the previous studies on HSC with nylon fibers subjected to high temperatures were performed only on the properties such as spalling, compressive strength, and elastic modulus rather than investigations on to the behaviors such as thermal strain, total strain, steady state creep, and transient creep. Therefore, in this study thermal strain, total strain, steady state creep, and transient creep of HSC mixed with nylon fibers with water to binder ratio of 0.30 to 0.15 were tested. The experimental results showed that nylon fibers did not affect the performance of HSC with nylon fibers at high temperatures. However, HSC with nylon fibers generated a larger transient creep strain than that of HSC without fibers and normal strength concrete.

  • In recent times, the lack of good quality natural aggregate has led to the alternative use of recycled aggregate. However, the adhered mortars in recycled aggregate lower the performance of the concrete, such as by reducing its strength and causing deterioration and cracking. In this study, the effects of nylon fiber (NF) on the mechanical and durable performance of recycled coarse aggregate concrete (RAC) were experimentally examined. Concrete specimens with natural coarse aggregate (NA) or RA were produced by adding 0, 0.6 and $1.2kg/m^3$ of NF. Various mechanical properties and the durability of the RAC were measured and compared with those of the NAC. In addition, in order to observe the hydrates and ITZ, SEM observations were made of the 28-day concrete samples. From the test results, as expected, it was found that the RAC exhibited lower performance than the NAC. However, the addition of NF to the concrete was effective in significantly enhancing the performance of the RAC due to the bridge effect of the NF.

  • In this study, discharged nylon fibers were added to asphalt concretes to be compared with fatigue life and analyzed in economic point of view. A four point bending fatigue test was conducted, and as a result, nylon fiber reinforced asphalt concretes that showed a 10percent increase in fatigue life compared to ordinary asphalt concrete. The economic analysis confirmed that the maintenance cost was decreased by 540 million won throughout the analyzing period. It is thought discharged nylon fiber reinforced asphalt will cause more economic and social effects than was shown by life cycle cost analysis.

  • Tunnel structures are widely used for transportations in mountains areas. To shorten the construction period and to cut down the construction expenditure, a construction technique that a tunnel excavation process and a tunnel lining process are simultaneously performed is often applied in the field. However, due to the vibration and impact caused by excavation process, cracking and deterioration of tunnel lining concrete could happen. This research experimentally investigated the effective role of the usages of blended cement and recently developed nylon fibers for tunnel lining concrete. It has been observed that both nylon fibers and blended cement improve the durability and physical properties of concrete.

  • Fiber reinforcement has been being widely used in concrete to enhance the mechanical properties and to reduce the micro-cracking caused by plastic and drying shrinkage. While researches has been focused on the benefits of fiber reinforcement, the properties of fiber reinforced concrete are strongly dependent on the type, shape and the amount of fibers in concrete. In this study, the resistance of nylon fiber reinforced concrete against the chloride ion penetration was experimentally observed by NT Build 492. The test results showed that the addition of nylon fiber has little effect on the change of the resistivity of concrete to the chloride ion penetration.

  • This study investigated the fundamental properties corresponding to various length changes on NY fiber reinforced concrete. For results of fresh concrete, the slump and air content were declined, but the unit volume weight and vebe time were increased. For the hardened concrete properties, the compressive strength showed increasing tendency according to the NY fiber length. The dry and autogenous shrinkage also decreased compared with Plain. Generally, the caes that 19 mm NY fiber was used was better than any other cases.

  • Decrease of performance degradation of High Strength Concrete occurs more than that of normal strength concrete at elevated temperature. Therefore, when it comes to evaluating performance of structures, strain of concrete subjected to elevated temperature and loading are important items. In this study, creep strain of High Strength Concrete sunjected to various temperature conditions and 33% loading was evaluated. As a result, creep strain increased with increase of temperature and loading. Creep strain of concrete at high temperature is influenced by loading.

  • The adhered mortars in recycled aggregate may lower the performance of the concrete, such as by reducing in strength and durability, and cracking. In the present study, the effects of nylon fiber (NF) on the mechanical and durable properties of 100% ordinary portland cement (OPC) and 50% ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) concretes incorporating recycled coarse aggregate (RA) were experimentally investigated. Concrete was produced by adding 0 and $0.6kg/m^3$ of NF and then cured in water for the predetermined period. Measurements of compressive and split tensile strength, water permeable pore and total charge passed through concrete were carried out, and the corresponding test results were compared with those of concrete incorporating crushed coarse aggregate (CA). In addition, the microstructures of 28-day concretes were observed by using SEM technique. Test results revealed that the RA concrete showed lower performance than CA concrete because of the adhered mortars in RA. However, it was obvious that the addition of NF in RA concrete was much effective in enhancing the performance of the concretes due to the bridge effect from NF. In particular, the application of NF2 (19 mm) exhibited a somewhat beneficial effect compared with concrete incorporating NF1 with respect to mechanical properties, especially for RA concrete.
