  • The cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were prepared by wet disk-milling (WDM) and fractionated by settling method into supernatant, middle and sediment fractions. The diameter and its distribution of the fractionated CNFs were investigated. With increasing WDM passing number, precipitation became delayed. Weight fraction at sediment fraction was decreased, whereas those at supernatant and middle fractions were increased with increasing WDM passing number. Diameter distribution of CNFs at supernatant fraction was narrowest and became broaden at middle and sediment fraction. Filtration time was longer in order of supernatant, middle and sediment fraction.

  • In this work, the surface of hydrophilic cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) was modified precisely by varying amounts of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) to produce CNF-based particle surfactants. We found that a critical CTAB density was required to generate amphiphilic CTAB-grafted CNF (CNF-CTAB). Compared to pristine CNF, CNF-CTAB was highly efficient at stabilizing oil-in-water Pickering emulsions. To evaluate their effectiveness as particle surfactants, the surface coverage of oil-in-water emulsion droplets was determined by changing the CNF-CTAB concentration in the aqueous phase. Furthermore, styrene-in-water stabilized by CNF-CTAB surfactants was thermally polymerized to produce CNF-stabilized polystyrene (PS) particles, offering a great potential for various applications including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and petrochemicals.

  • Cellulose is a beneficial material that has low cost, lightweight, high compatibility and biodegradability. Recently electroactive paper (EAPap) on cellulose base was discovered as a smart material and actuator through ion migration and piezoelectric effect. Furthermore cellulose has a potentiality to apply the display material, because of its high reflectivity, flexibility and high transmittance. The various shapes and height patterns of the Cellulose acetate (CA) solution, such as circle and honeycomb patterns, were fabricated and observed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM, S4300 Hitachi). The resulting pattern showed uniform size in the large area without defect. After stretching the CA film with saponification process in the sodium methoxide in methanol solution, Most of the compositions become one directional ordered nanofibers below 50nm.

  • Sulfuric acid hydrolysis is a typical approach for producing cellulose nanocrystals. The method has been widely used, but it has a disadvantage of low yield of cellulose nanocrystals compared to mechanical method. To expand the application of cellulose nanocrystals in practical, we should be able to produce them with higher yield and the controlled properties. In this study, therefore, we intended to investigate the effect of sulfuric acid hydrolysis condition on the characteristics of the prepared cellulose nanocrystals. The concentration of sulfuric acid, temperature and hydrolysis time were varied, and the yield as well as diverse properties including the morphology, size and zeta potential were examined. We could obtain cellulose nanocrystals up to 70% of yield and found that the properties were dependent on the reaction condition. It would be helpful to select an appropriate condition for producing cellulose nanocrystals.

  • Recently, interest in making nanocomposite materials for construction utilizing the excellent physical properties of nano materials is increasing. In this study, basic properties of mortar were evaluated by the dispersion condition of cellulose nano-crystals (CNCs) extracted from nanocellulose and the feasibility of the study was examined. As a result, it was confirmed that the flexural strength and the compressive strength were increased by increasing the dispersion time of the CNCs and by using the ultrasonic dispersing device and the magnetic stirrer together.

  • Electro-Active Paper (EAPap) is attractive for EAP actuator due to its merit in terms of light weight, dry condition, large displacement output, low actuation voltage and low power consumption. The EAPap is based on cellulose paper, and is shown to involve primarily transport of ions in response to an external electric field. This actuating mechanism is similar to conductive polymer based actuators. For performance improvement of EAPap, hybrid actuators are tried. The actuators based on cellulose paper attached conducting polypyrrole, polyaniline and single wall carbon nanotube/polyaniline(emeraldine base) have been achieved by Electro chemical deposition and mechanical deposition of the polymers onto cellulose paper.

  • The surge in demand for lithium is primarily fueled by the expanding electric vehicle market, the necessity for renewable energy storage, and governmental initiatives aimed at achieving carbon neutrality. This study proposes a straightforward method for lithium extraction utilizing cellulose nanofiber (CNF) via a vacuum filtration process. This approach yields a porous CNF film, showcasing its potential utility as a lithium extractor and indicator. Given its abundance and eco-friendly characteristics, cellulose nanofiber (CNF) emerges as a material offering both economic and environmental advantages over traditional lithium extraction techniques. Hence, this research not only contributes to lithium recovery but also presents a sustainable solution to meet the growing demand for lithium in energy storage technologies.
