  • In order to find the optical properties of CdSe thin film and CdSe nanostructure, the following experiments were performed: the CdSe wurtzite nanostructure was made by using 99.99% CdSe (Aldrich) powder with the $SiO_x$ substrates and the $AlO_x$ membranes in $7{\times}10^{-6}$ torr vacuum. (The average vacuum coating speed being 1 ${\AA}$/sec). The calculations obtained were about 200 nm diameter of nanotubes on the $AlO_x$ membranes and a crystallite size of about 2 nm on the $SiO_x$ substrates. These results were verified through the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis, thin film X-ray diffraction analysis and emission spectroscopy.

  • To investigate an effect of sintering atmosphere on microstructure and properties of metallic particle dispersed ceramic based composites, the powder mixtures of $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Ni, synthesized by chemical solution process, were hot-pressed under different atmospheres such as hydrogen or argon gas and different sintering temperature. Hot-pressed composite in a hydrogen atmosphere exhibited less reaction phase of $FeAl_2O_4$ and enhanced mechanical properties than that in an argon atmosphere. Furthermore, decreasing hot-pressing temperature produced a refinement of ceramic matrix and metallic dispersion particles as well as improvement of mechanical properties. The change of mechanical properties in the composites with different sintering conditions was explained by microstructural characteristics relating to reaction phase formation.

  • The optimum route to fabricate nano-sized Fe-50 wt% Co and hydrogen-reduction behavior of calcined Fe-/Conitrate was investigated. The powder mixture of metal oxides was prepared by solution mixing and calcination of Fe-/Co-nitrate. A DTA-TG and microstructural analysis revealed that the nitrates mixture by the calcination at $300^{\circ}C$ for 2 h was changed to Fe-oxide/$Co_3O_4$ composite powders with an average particle size of 100 nm. The reduction behavior of the calcined powders was analyzed by DTA-TG in a hydrogen atmosphere. The composite powders of Fe-oxide and Co3O4 changed to a Fe-Co phase with an average particle size of 40 nm in the temperature range of $260-420^{\circ}C$. In the TG analysis, a two-step reduction process relating to the presence of Fe3O4 and a CoO phase as the intermediate phase was observed. The hydrogen-reduction kinetics of the Fe-oxide/Co3O4 composite powders was evaluated by the amount of peak shift with heating rates in TG. The activation energies for the reduction, estimated by the slope of the Kissinger plot, were 96 kJ/mol in the peak temperature range of $231-297^{\circ}C$ and 83 kJ/mol of $290-390^{\circ}C$, respectively. The reported activation energy of 70.4-94.4 kJ/mol for the reduction of Fe- and Co-oxides is in reasonable agreement with the measured value in this study.

  • Nanostructured cobalt materials have recently attracted considerable attention due to their potential applications in high-density data storage, magnetic separation and heterogeneous catalysts. The size as well as the morphology at the nano scale strongly influences the physical and chemical properties of cobalt nano materials. In this study, cobalt nano particles synthesized by a a polyol process, which is a liquid-phase reduction method, were investigated. Cobalt hydroxide ($Co(OH)_2$), as an intermediate reaction product, was synthesized by the reaction between cobalt sulphate heptahydrate ($CoSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$) used as a precursor and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) dissolved in DI water. As-synthesized $Co(OH)_2$ was washed and filtered several times with DI water, because intermediate reaction products had not only $Co(OH)_2$ but also sodium sulphate ($Na_2SO_4$), as an impurity. Then the cobalt powder was synthesized by diethylene glycol (DEG), as a reduction agent, with various temperatures and times. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), as a capping agent, was also added to control agglomeration and dispersion of the cobalt nano particles. The optimized synthesis condition was achieved at $220^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours with 0.6 of the PVP/$Co(OH)_2$ molar ratio. Consequently, it was confirmed that the synthesized nano sized cobalt particles had a face centered cubic (fcc) structure and with a size range of 100-200 nm.

  • In this paper, the ZnS nanoparticles were synthesized according to the process conditions of hydrothermal synthesis. When the molar ratio of Zn to S was 1:1.2, it was confirmed that it had a cubic single phase and a high crystal phase. After the molar ratio is fixed, hydrothermal synthesis was conducted at $180^{\circ}C$ for 24, 36, 72 and 96 h in order to confirm the structural change with the change of hydrothermal synthesis times. As the hydrothermal synthesis times increased, the particle size increased. The hydrothermal synthesized particle size for 72 h was considered to be suitable for sintering. The ZnS ceramic had a density of 99.7% and an excellent transmittance of ~70% in the long-wavelength region.

  • CeO2 nanoparticles, employed in a lot of fields due to their excellent oxidation and reduction properties, are synthesized through a solvothermal process, and a high specific surface area is shown by controlling, among various process parameters in the solvothermal process, the type of solvent. The synthesized CeO2 nanoparticles are about 11~13 nm in the crystallite size and their specific surface area is about 65.38~84.65 ㎡/g, depending on the amount of ethanol contained in the solvent for the solvothermal process; all synthesized CeO2 nanoparticles shows a fluorite structure. The dispersibility and microstructure of the synthesized CeO2 nanoparticles are investigated according to the species of dispersant and the pH value of the solution; an improvement in dispersibility is shown with the addition of dispersants and control of the pH. Various dispersing properties appear according to the dispersant species and pH in the solution with the synthesized CeO2 nanoparticles, indicating that improved dispersing properties in the synthesized CeO2 nanoparticles can be secured by applying dispersant and pH control simultaneously.

  • Crystal structure, microstructure, and dielectric properties of the (Ca, Sr)(Zr, Ti)O3 (CSZT) system has been studied as a function of sintering temperature and MgO addition for microwave applications. A single-phase CSZT powder with the orthorhombic crystal structure was obtained by the solid-state reaction method. The powder compacts were sintered at 1200℃, 1300℃, and 1400℃ respectively. All the sintered samples had a single-phase orthorhombic crystal structure and grain size increased with sintering temperature. In the case of 1 mol% MgO addition, the orthorhombic crystal structure was the main phase; however, a secondary phase appeared during sintering at 1400℃, as determined by EDS analysis. At 1400℃, the undoped and MgO-doped CSZT had almost similar grain size distribution and densification but the grain size distribution became slightly narrow. The MgO-doped CSZT showed excellent low-loss dielectric properties: εr = 34.14, tanδ = 0.00047, τε = -3.58 ppm/℃ at 1 MHz.

  • YSZ (Yttria-stabilized zirconia) is a ceramic material that is used for electronic and structural materials due to its excellent mechanical properties and specific electrical characteristics according to the Yttrium addition. Hydrothermal synthesis has several advantages such as fine particle size, uniform crystalline phase, fast reaction time, low process temperature and good dispersion condition. In order to synthesize YSZ nanoparticles with high crystallinity, hydrothermal synthesis was performed at various concentrations of NaOH. The hydrothermal process was held at a low temperature ($100^{\circ}C$), with a short process time (2,4,8 hours); the acidity or alkalinity of solution was controlled in a range of pH 2~12 by addition of NaOH. The optimum condition was found to be pH 12, at which high solubility levels of Y(OH) and Zr(OH) were reported. The synthesized nano powder showed high crystallinity and homogenous composition, and uniform particle size of about 10 nm.

  • Nano-technology is a super microscopic technology to deal with structures of 100 nm or smaller. This technology also involves the developing of $TiO_2$ materials or $TiO_2$ devices within that size. The aim of the present paper is to synthesize $WO_x$ doped nano-$TiO_2$ by the Sonochemistry method and to evaluate the effect of different percentages (0.5-5 wt%) of tungsten oxide load on $TiO_2$ in methylene blue (MB) elimination. The samples were characterized using such different techniques as X-ray diffraction (XRD), TEM, SEM, and UV-VIS absorption spectra. The photo-catalytic activity of tungsten oxide doped $TiO_2$ was evaluated through the elimination of methylene blue using UV-irradiation (315-400nm). The best result was found with 5 wt% $WO_x$ doped $TiO_2$. It has been confirmed that $WO_x-TiO_2$ could be excited by visible light (E<3.2 eV) and that the recombination rate of electrons/holes in $WO_x-TiO_2$ declined due to the existence of $WO_x$ doped in $TiO_2$.

  • Oxygen ionic conductors of YSZ electrolyte in SOFC unit cell are applied to anode and cathode as well as electrolyte to have triple-phase-boundaries(TPB) of electrochemical reaction, and it is required to decrease the sintering temperature of anode-supported electrolyte by the nanoscale of YSZ powder. In this report, nanoscale YSZ powder was synthesized by the chemical co-precipitation method. The particle size, surface area and morphology of the powder were observed by SEM and BET. Thin film electrolyte of under 10㎛ was fabricated by tape casting using the synthesized YSZ powder, and ionic conductivity and gas permiability of electrolyte film were evaluated. Finally, the SOFC unit cell was fabricated using the anode-supported electrolyte prepared by a tape casting method and co-sintering. Electrochemical evauations of the SOFC unit cell, including measurements such as power density and impedance, were performed and analyzed.
