  • In this paper, a shape design sensitivity analysis(DSA) method is presented for Mindlin plates using an isogeometric approach. The isogeometric method possesses desirable advantages; the representation of exact geometry and the higher order inter-element continuity, which lead to the fast convergence of solution as well as accurate sensitivity results. Unlike the finite element methods using linear shape functions, the isogeometric method considers the exact normal vector and curvature of the CAD geometry, taking advantages of higher order NURBS basis functions. A selective reduced integration(SRI) technique is incorporated to overcome the difficulty of 'shear locking' phenomenon. This simple technique is surprisingly helpful for the accuracy of the isogeometric shape sensitivity without complicated formulation. Through the numerical examples of plate bending problems, the accuracy of the proposed isogeometric analysis method is compared with that of finite element one. Also, the isogeometric shape sensitivity turns out to be very accurate when compared with finite difference sensitivity.

  • The HEC-HMS model was applied to identify the rainfall-runoff processes for the Anseongchun basin, where the lower part of the stream has been damaged severely by tropical storms in the past. Modeling processes include incorporating with the SCS-CN model for loss, Clark's UH model for transformation, exponential recession model for baseflow, and Muskingum model for channel routing. The parameters were calibrated through an optimization technique using a trial and error method. Sensitivity analysis after calibration was performed to understand the effects of parameters, such as the time of concentration, storage coefficient, and base flow related constants. Two storm water events were simulated by the model and compared with the corresponding observations. Good accuracy in predicting the runoff volume, peak flow, and the time to peak flow was achieved using the selected methods. The results of this study can be used as a useful tool for decision makers to determine a master plan for regional flood control management.

  • EMI problem is very important in a printed circuit board design. This paper deals with image plane as one of the most effective method to reduce EMI in PCB. The shielding performance of one and two layers of image planes of finite width and length is analyzed by the method of moments based on the triangular surface patch model. The current distributions were modeled as two simple line sources. It is demonstrated that proper triangulation should be made so as to take two basis functions in the boundary triangles of the surface.

  • Because of the lack of translation invariance of wavelet basis, traditional wavelet thresholding denoising leads to pseudo-Gibbs phenomena in the vicinity of discontinuities of signal. In this paper, in order to reduce the pseudo-Gibbs phenomena, wavelet coefficients are thresholded and reconstruction algorithm is implemented through minimizing the total variation of denoising signal using subgradient descent algorithm. Most of experiments were performed under the non-real-time and real-time environments. In the case of non-real-time experiments, the algorithm that this paper proposes was found more effective than that of wavelet hard thresholding denoising by 2.794㏈(SNR) based on the signal to noise ratio. And lots of pseudo-Gibbs phenomena was removed visually in the vicinity of discontinuities. In the case of real-time experiments, the number of iteration was restricted to 60 times considering the performance time. It took 0.49 seconds and most of the pseudo-Gibbs phenomena were also removed.

  • Block-transform coding is one of the most popular approaches for image compression. For example, DCT is widely used in the internaltional standards standards such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, JPEG, and H.261. In the block-based transform coding, blocking artifacts may appear along block boundaries, and they can cause severe image degradation eqpecially when the transform coefficients are coarsely quantized. In this paper, we propose a new method for blocking artifacts reduction in transform-coded images. For blocking artifacts reduction, we add a correction term, on a block basis, composed of a linear combination of 28 basis images that are orthonormal on block boundaries. We select 28 DCT kernel functions of which boundary values are linearly independent, and Gram-Schmidt process is applied to the boundary values in order to obtain 28 boundary-orthonormal basis images. A threshold of bolock discontinuity is introduced for improvement of visual quality by reducing image blurring. We also investigate the number of basis images needed for efficient blocking artifacts reduction when the compression ratio changes.

  • Recently, as users' requests for high quality mobile multimedia services are rapidly increasing and additional bandwidth can be provided by adopting the hierarchical modulation transmission technology, the research on the Advanced Terrestrial DMB (AT-DMB) service using the SVC (Scalable Video Coding) scheme is being actively studied. But, in order to realize a compatible video service and to accelerate the successful standardization and commercialization, it is necessary to simplify the compatible encoder structure. In this parer, we propose a fast mode decision method by constraining the redundant coding modes in the spatial scalable encoder that keeps the current T-DMB video in base layer. The proposed method is based on the statistical characteristics of each coding mode at both base and enhancement layers, inter-layer predictions, which are derived by investigating macroblock-layer coding modes of the spatial scalable encoder's functional structure. Through computer simulations, it is shown that a simplified encoder model that reduces the heavy computational burden can be found, while keeping the objective visual quality very high.

  • In this study, the HEC-HMS was applied to determine rainfall-runoff processes for the Gokgyuchun basin. Several sub-basins have large-scale reservoirs for agricultural needs and they store large amounts of initial runoff. Three infiltration methods were implemented to reflect the effect of initial loss by reservoirs: 'SCS-CN'(Scheme I), 'SCS-CN' with simple surface method(Scheme II), and 'Initial and Constant rate'(Scheme III). Modeling processes include incorporating three different methods for loss due to infiltration, Clark's UH model for transformation, exponential recession model for baseflow, and Muskingum model for channel routing. The parameters were calibrated using an optimization technique with trial and error method. Performance measures, such as NSE, RAR, and PBIAS, were adopted to aid in the calibration processes. The model performance for those methods was evaluated at Gangcheong station, which is the outlet of study site. Good accuracy in predicting runoff volume and peak flow, and peak time was obtained using the Scheme II and III, considering the initial loss, whereas Scheme I showed low reliability for storms. Scheme III did not show good matches between observed and simulated values for storms with multi peaks. Conclusively, Scheme II provided better results for both single and multi-peak storms. The results of this study can provide a useful tool for decision makers to determine master plans for regional flood control management.
