  • In this study, we developed an evaporation-driven self-assembly coating method for an ceramic intermediate layer on an ultrapermeable -Al2O3 support with large pore size of ~1.5 ㎛. The method led to the formation of a ceramic intermediate layer with higher surface homogeneity and less surface roughness than the conventional dip-coating method. A mesoporous -Al2O3 layer was deposited on the support to evaluate support quality. A supported -Al2O3 membrane was defect-free even without repeated coating. Furthermore, the membrane showed 2.3 times higher nitrogen permeance than one prepared on a macroporous support with pore size range of 100~200 nm, which is widely used for ceramic membrane coating.

  • In order to prepare porous scaffolds capable of pore control, PMMA powder serving as a pore-forming agent was added to HA powder to synthesize a slurry containing TBA as a solvent. And then, porous HA scaffolds where pillarshaped pore channels interconnected with each other were fabricated by freeze-casting and sintering. The crystal structure of the HA scaffolds according to the addition amount of PMMA powder was measured by XRD and the surface and inner cross section of the scaffolds were analyzed through SEM. It was found that removal of PMMA during sintering affects the internal structure of the scaffolds and the crystallinity of the HA powder. Furthermore, through evaluating the physical and mechanical properties of the scaffolds, it was confirmed that the porosity, pore size and compressive strength can be controlled by controlling the addition amount of the pore-forming agent. It was also found that the HA scaffolds produced in this study were similar in structure and properties to the natural cancellous bone. This suggests that porous HA scaffolds with PMMA can be used as an alternative to autogenous bone for tissue engineering as an artificial bone scaffold.

  • Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) are of great interest of next generation energy conversion system due to their high energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. The basic SOFC unit consists of anode, cathode and solid electrolyte. Among these components, anode plays the most important role for the oxidation of fuel to generate electricity and also behaves as a substrate of the whole cell. It is normally requested that the anode materials should have the high electrical conductivity and gas permeability to reduce the polarization loss of the cell. In this study, the effect of pore former on the microstructure of anode substrate was investigated and thus on the electrical conductivity and the gas permeability. According to the results, microstructure and electrical conductivity of anode substrate were greatly influenced by the shape of pore former and especially by the anisotrpy of the pore former. The use of anisotropic pore former is supposed to deteriorate the cell performance by which the electrical conduction path is disconnected but also the effective gas diffusion path for the fuel is reduced.

  • Porous body was prepared from coal fly ash 70 wt%0clay 30 wt% slip using DCC(Direct Coagulated Casting) method. Effect of the specific gravity of the slip on the pore size and distribution of the sintered body was examined by the SEM observation of microstructure and mercury porosimetry measurement of the pore size distribution. Average pore size of the porous sintered body was about 2.5μm for all slips with specific gravity of 1.55, 1.60 and 1.65g/cm3, respectively. Sintered body prepared from the slip of specific gravity of 1.60g/cm3 have the narrowest pore size distribution. slip of specific gravity of 1.55g/cm3 shows broader pore size distribution due to slow gellation process. Slip of specific gravity of 1.65g/cm3 required large amount of deflocculant and showed large variation of the viscosity with addition of coagulant which resulted in very unstable slip properties.

  • In this study, we proposed new forming process for a porous ceramic body with unique pore structure. h tubular-type porous NiO-YSZ body with radially aligned pore channels was prepared by freeze-drying of aqueous slurry. A NiO-YSZ slurry was poured into the mold, which was designed to control the crystallization direction of the ice, followed by freezing. Thereafter the ice was sublimated at a reduced pressure. SEM observations revealed that the NiO-YSZ porous body showed aligned large pore channels parallel to the ice growth direction, and fine pores are formed around the outer surface of the tube. It was considered that the difference in the ice growth rate during the freezing process resulted in such a characteristic microstructure. Bilayer consisting of dense thin electrolyte film of YSZ onto the tubular type porous body has been successfully fabricated using a slurry-coating process followed by co-firing. It was regarded that the obtained bilayer structure is suitable for constructing electrode-support type electrochemical devices such as solid oxide fuel cells.

  • To fabricate the continuously porous alumina bodies by multi-extrusion process, carbon powder and ethylene vinyl acetate were used as a pore forming agent and a binder, respectively. As the change of extrusion pass number, reduction ratio as well as the volume fraction of core and tube, the porous alumina bodies having various kind of pore size and porosity could be obtained. The porous bodies showed continuous pore shape, high specific surface as well as high bending strength, which were compared with those of commercial alumina bodies. In-vitro study was carried out using MG-63 osteoblast cells to investigate of their biocompatibility. As a result, the cells grew well on top and bottom as well as inside surface of pore. From the result of in-vivo study of 3-dimensional porous alumina bodies using rats, it was confirmed that any inflammatory response was not found in the subcutaneous tissue around porous body. Also the porous bodies removed from the rats were fully covered with well-developed fibrous tissues and showed the formation of new capillary blood vessels.

  • Activated carbon (AC) and carbon molecular sieve (CMS) have attracted attention as porous materials for recovery and separation of greenhouse gases. The carbon molecular sieve having uniform pores is used for collecting and separating gases because it may selectively adsorb a specific gas. The size and uniformity of pores determine the performance of the CMS, and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is widely used to coat the surface with a predetermined thickness in order to control the CMS's micropores. This CVD method can be used to control the size of pores in CMS manufacturing, but it must be optimized because of its various experimental variables. Therefore, in order to produce AC and CMS for gas adsorption and separation, this review focuses on various activation processes and pore control technologies by CVD and surface treatment.

  • In this study, nanoporous HKUST-1 membranes were synthesized by solvothermal method. It is very difficult to prepare uniform and crack-free HKUST-1 layer on macroporous alumina support by in-situ solvothermal method. In this study, continuous and crack-free HKUST-1 membranes could be obtained by spraying solvothermal precursor solution on the heated alumina support, followed by solvothermal synthesis. HKUST-1 membranes were characterized by XRD, FE-SEM and single gas permeation experiments.
