The Cyclicality of Productivity, Market Power, and Returns to Scale in the Korean Open Economy: An Empirical Analysis 1975-2010 (한국경제의 총요소생산성의 순환성에 관한 실증분석(1975-2010))

  • The cyclicality of productivity has been one of the essential issues in macroeconomics. Since Solow(1957) developed the dominant approach to the measurement of productivity growth, Solow's approach, which assumes the perfect competition, the constant returns to scale, and the full use of input factor has been modified particularly in Hall's(1990) and Basu's(1996) works. Their researches take account of market power, returns to scale, and variable factor utilization. This paper establishes the empirical model based on Hall's(1990) and Basu's(1996) models, estimates 4 types of Solow's reidual in manufacturing and 2 service industries over the period 1975:1-2010:4, and analyzes the cyclicality of measured productivity. The result proved the measured productivity to be procyclical in manufacturing industries and electricity and water industry, and in contrast to the Basu's, the variable factor utilization transformed the countercyclicality of measured productivity into its procyclicality in the Korean economy.

Productivity Change and Relative Efficiency of Korean Professional Baseball Teams (한국 프로야구 구단의 상대적 효율성 및 생산성 변화)

  • Most of professional baseball teams are not good for business condition because of operation costs in spite of support of mother company. This study measured the relative efficiency and productivity change of the Korean professional baseball teams using DEA model and Malmquist Index for 2006-2008. The main results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, in case of efficiency of CCR for 2006-2008, the number of efficient professional baseball teams(CCR value is one) are two(Doosan Bears, Samsung Lions), two(Doosan Bears, SK Wyberns), two(Lotte Giants, LG Twins) respectively. Second, in case of efficiency of BCC for 2006-2008, the number of efficient professional baseball teams(BCC value is one) are three(Doosan Bears, Samsung Lions, LG Twins ), four(Doosan Bears, SK Wyberns, Samsung Lions, Kia Tigers), four(Lotte Giants, LG Twins, SK Wyberns, Samsung Lions) respectively. Third, average of Malmquist Index representing productivity change for 2006-2008 are 1.0615, 1.0293 respectively. These values mean increase of productivity. Results of this study can be used by inefficient professional baseball teams to improve inefficiency.

The Comparative Study on the Efficiency of Five Largest Seaports in Korea (한국 5대 항만의 효율성에 대한 비교연구)

  • By using data envelopment analysis(DEA) this research measures the efficiency of Korea's five seaports and their Malmquist productivity from 1997 to 2006. Under the assumption of CRS(constant returns to scale) and VRS(various returns to scale), seaports' rankings of efficiency are measured. Busan port is confirmed as a best-performed port in the various measurements. Important finding facts are as follows. 1)Busan, lncheon and Ulsan seaports are efficient ports under the assumption of CRS and VRS. 2)Gwangyang port shows 4.3% lower efficiency level compared with efficient ports. 3)Pohang port shows 27.3% lower efficiency level compared with efficient ports. 4)Average total factor productivity of Korea's five ports has been lower at the rate of 3.1% during the period from 1997 to 2006. Main policy implications are 1)Busan port is more efficient than Gwangyang port, which reflects the difference of economic activities between two regional econmies. 2)During the period 1997-2006, Korea's five largest ports has experienced lower efficiency levels in the first half period because of the 1997 Korean Financial Crisis, but higher efficiency levels in the second half period because of economic recovery. In future research the more and better data will be expected to improve the understanding of Korean seaports' efficiency characteristics.

Analysis of Relationship between 2-D Fabric Tensor Parameters and Hydraulic Properties of Fractured Rock Mass (절리성 암반의 이차원 균열텐서 파라미터와 수리적 특성 간의 상관성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • As a measure of the combined effect of fracture geometry, the fabric tensor parameters could quantify the status of the connected fluid flow paths in discrete fracture network (DFN). The correlation analysis between fabric tensor parameters and hydraulic properties of the 2-D DFN was performed in this study. It is found that there exists a strong nonlinear relationship between the directional conductivity and the fabric tensor component estimated in the direction normal to the direction of hydraulic conductivity. The circular radial plots without significant variation of the first invariant ($F_0$) of fabric tensor for different sized 2-D DFN block are a necessary condition for treating representative element volume (REV) of a fractured rock mass. The relative error (ER) between the numerically calculated directional hydraulic conductivity and the theoretical directional hydraulic conductivity decreases with the increase in $F_0$. A strong functional relation seems to exist between the $F_0$ and the average block hydraulic conductivity.

Analysis on the Efficiency of Social Welfare Facility in Local Governments (지방자치단체 사회복지시설 운영의 효율성 분석)

  • For introduction of local autonomy system, local government enabled efficient supply of public service by local resident's request. Specially, local governments is doing effort of that organize various policy and a lot of budgets for social welfare promotion, but is interested relatively little in efficient use of social welfare finance and operation. According to these problem, this study measured efficiency of social welfare facility in local governments. The purpose of this analysis is to measure the efficiency of community welfare in local governments by data envelopment analysis(DEA), using data from 16 local governments in Korea. Input variance is GDP per capita in local, rate of welfare budget, rate of financial independence and local public official per 10,000 capita. Output variance is social welfare facility per 100,000 capita and park area per 1,000 capita, The results of the study are summarized as follows : First, There was differential in efficiency about social welfare facilities operation in local governments. 7 local governments(Busan, etc.) was an in efficiency. Second, some local governments(Incheon, etc.) must increase scale of input variance, and some local governments(Busan, etc.) must improve efficiency of input variance.

A Comparative Analysis of the Efficiency of Automobile Export Ports in Korea and Japan (한국과 일본의 자동차 수출항만 효율성 비교 분석)

  • Korea is the fifth largest producer of automobiles in the world, and this industry accounts for the highest portion of the entire manufacturing industry. It is an especially important industry occupying second place in the top 10 export items in Korea. Korea exports about 3 million units of cars produced in the country and abroad, based on new cars and excluding second hand cars. Japan, along with Korea, represents a high portion of the global automobile industry, and it exports more than 4 million cars to the rest of the world. In particular, both Korea and Japan export automobile and used cars produced within the country, almost all of them by PCC(Pure Car Carrier) or PCTC(Pure Car Truck Carrier). Therefore, automobile export ports are located near automobile factories, and are being used in export to foreign countries. However, there are inefficient problems, such as poor port facilities, yard space shortage for loading and unloading operations and lack of proficiency of cargo handling companies. As a result, there are delays in cargo operations, or ships waiting have occurred. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to measure and compare the efficiency of automobile export ports in Korea and Japan. To measure the efficiency of automobile export port, we used CRS and VRS models from DEA. The input and output parameters were set as length of quay, yard area and throughput of cars, and DMUs are 25 ports for evaluating the efficiency. As a result of the efficiency measurements, two Korean ports (Gwangyang and Ulsan) and three Japanes ports (Kanda, Omaezaki, Kanmon-Shimonoseki) showed high efficiency in both models. These results can be used to establish strategies for enhancing efficiency and competitiveness of automobile export ports in Korea and Japan.

A Study on Eco-efficiency in power plants using DEA Analysis (DEA 모형을 이용한 발전회사 환경효율성에 대한 연구)

  • This study aims to provide power generating plants with eco-efficiency information. To implement the purposes, of study, both DEA(Data, Envelopment Analysis) model and interview were incorporated in terms of methodologies. To analyze the managerial efficiency, total labor cost and number of employees were considered as input factors. CO2, NOx, and water also were considered as input factors to analyze eco-efficiency. Both annual total power product and annual total revenue were used as output factors. CRS(Constant Return to Scale) and VRS(Variable Return to) model were facilitated in this analysis. According to the findings, most of the power plants were evaluated as 'Efficient'' taking into consideration of average value, both 0.928 from CCR model and 0.969 from VRS model. 7 DMUs including DMU3 and DMU12 are efficient out of 35 DMUs relatively, other DMUs are inefficient. For results of inefficient output factors distribution, it was found that inefficiency for NOx was marked relatively higher than CO2. In order to improve the eco-efficiency in the power plants in the long term, the target amount of Co2 as well as NOx reduction needs to be properly proposed in consideration of particularity of power plants. In the long run, renewable energy, alternative fuels should be adapted to reduce the eco-inefficient.

The Impact of Korean Human Capital on the Permanent National Economic Growth in the New Normal Era (뉴 노멀 시대하 한국의 인적자본이 영구적 국민경제성장에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the transitory and permanent growth effects of human capital of the Korean economy based on the analysis of the New Normal Era during the period 1970-2014. For the transitory effects, we found out that all the coefficients of capital and labor are significant above the 5% level, whereas the coefficients of labor and human capital are significant only at the 10% level during the period 1999~2014. In particular, in the case of 1% increase in the human capital, the actual growth rate raised up with the rate of 0.15% over a 45-year period. For the permanent growth effects, the coefficients of capital and labor are significant above the 5% level. Furthermore, sum of the coefficients of the capital and labor showed approximately 0.96~0.99, approaching to a unit, which implies that there is a constant returns scale with respect to these inputs. In particular, the coefficient of human capital at 0.064 is significant at the 10% level. This implies that the permanent growth effect of an additional index of human capital is about 0.64% the previous 45-year period.

Factor Prices and Markup in the Korean Manufacturing Industry: An Empirical Analysis 1975-2007 (한국의 생산요소가격 변화가 마크업의 변동에 미치는 영향에 관한 실증분석: 1975-2007)

  • The Korean economy have experienced the remarkable decreases in factor prices such as bond yields, real wage since the IMF foreign exchange crisis. This paper investigates the effects of the price changes in the factor markets on determining the level and cyclicality of industrial markups in the manufacturing industry. For this purpose, we construct a markup equation in the small open economy based on the production function including foreign intermediate goods and assuming constant returns to scale technology and AR(1) process of technological coefficient. Empirical results are summarized as the followings. The empirical results shows that the increased markups after the IMF crisis can be explained by the price decreases in the factor markets which result in lowering marginal costs. And we also observed counter cyclicality of markup, labor share and interest rates while real wages, technical coefficients, and production price index proved to be pro-cyclical. In conclusion, the price changes in factor market have contributed to the stickiness in markup fluctuation in the manufacturing industry.

  • The purpose of this paper is to measure the clustering change and analyze empirical results, and choose the clustering ports for Busan, Incheon, and Gwangyang ports by using Artificial Neural Network, Social Network, and Tabu Search models on 38 Asian container ports over the period 2007-2016. The models consider number of cranes, depth, birth length, and total area as inputs and container throughput as output. Followings are the main empirical results. First, the variables ranking order which affects the clustering according to artificial neural network are TEU, birth length, depth, total area, and number of cranes. Second, social network analysis shows the same clustering in the benevolent and aggressive models. Third, the efficiency of domestic ports are worsened after clustering using social network analysis and tabu search models. Forth, social network and tabu search models can increase the efficiency by 37% compared to that of the general CCR model. Fifth, according to the social network analysis and tabu search models, 3 Korean ports could be clustered with Asian ports like Busan Port(Kobe, Osaka, Port Klang, Tanjung Pelepas, and Manila), Incheon Port(Shahid Rajaee, and Gwangyang), and Gwangyang Port(Aqaba, Port Sulatan Qaboos, Dammam, Khor Fakkan, and Incheon). Korean seaport authority should introduce port improvement plans by using the methods used in this paper.
