  • The development of weapon systems (or components) is hindered by the number of tests due to the limited development period and cost, which reduces the scale of accumulated data related to failures. Nevertheless, because a large amount of failure data and maintenance details during the operational period are managed by computerized data, the cause of failure of weapon systems (or components) can be analyzed using the data. On the other hand, analyzing the failure and maintenance details of various weapon systems is difficult because of the variation among groups and companies, and details of the cause of failure are described as unstructured text data. Fortunately, the recent developments of big data processing technology, machine learning algorithm, and improved HW computation ability have supported major research into various methods for processing the above unstructured data. In this paper, unstructured data related to the failure / maintenance of defense weapon systems (or components) is presented by applying doc2vec, a machine learning technique, to analyze the failure cases.

  • Future battlefield domains are expanding to ground, sea, air, space, and cyber, so future military operations are expected to be carried out simultaneously and complexly in various battlefield domains. In addition, the application of convergence technologies that create innovations in all fields of economy, society, and defense, such as artificial intelligence, IoT, and big data, is being promoted. However, since the current Korean military C4I system manages warfighting function DBs in one DB server, the efficiency of combat performance is reduced utilization and distribution speed of data and operation response time. To solve this problem, research is needed on how to apply the 4th industrial revolution technologies such as AI, IoT, 5G, big data, and cloud to the Korean military C4I system, but research on this is insufficient. Therefore, this paper analyzes the problems of the current Korean military C4I system and proposes to apply the 4th industrial revolution technology in terms of operational mission, network and data link, computing environment, cyber operation, interoperability and interlocking capabilities.

  • The defense environment is rapidly changing, such as nuclear and missile threats of North Korea, changes in war patterns, and a decrease in military service resources due to low birth rate. In order to actively respond to these changes, the Korean military is promoting Defense Innovation 4.0 and is trying to foster an army armed with high technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data analysis, etc. In this regard, we analyze the effectiveness of the radar-based AI scientific guard system applied by high technology for guard operations using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). We first select evaluation factors that can assess the effectiveness of the scientific guard system, and analyze its relative importance. Each evaluation factor was selected by deriving a significant concept from operating principle and how they work, and by consulting experts on the correlation between each factor and effectiveness of the scientific guard system. We examine the relative effects of the radar-based AI scientific guard system and existing scientific guard system based on the importance of the evaluation factors.

  • Recently, one of the core keywords in information technology (IT) as well as areas such as business management is big data. Big data is a term that includes technology, personnel, and organization required to gather/manage/analyze collection of data sets so large and complex that it becomes difficult to manage and analyze using traditional tools. The military has been accumulating data for a long period due to the organization's characteristic in placing emphasis on reporting and records. Considering such characteristic of the military, this study verifies the possibility of improving the performance of the military organization through use of big data and furthermore, create scientific development of operation, strategy, and support environment. For this purpose, the study organizes general status and case studies related to big data, traces back examples of data utilization by Korean's national defense sector through US military data collection and case studies, and proposes the possibility of using and applying big data in the national defense sector.

  • Although there is a growing body of research on organizational commitment profiles based on a person-centered approach, it is not widely applied to the commitment research conducted by Korean organizational scholars yet. Therefore, in this paper, we introduced the concept and analytical methods, such as cluster analysis and latent profile analysis (LPA), of the person-centered approach. In addition, we also performed both cluster analysis and LPA to identify types of organizational commitment profiles of Korean employees based on the combination of affective, continuance and normative commitment on the sample from a range of different fields in South Korea (n = 349). Both analyses extracted two comparable sets of 6 commitment profiles. These six profiles were then contrasted with employee turnover intention. Finally, implications for commitment theory, practices and future research issues were discussed.
