A Study on the Status of Practical Application of Oral Hygiene Devices :with labor of the D heavy industries (D중공업 근로자의 구강위생용품 사용실태 조사)

  • This study was carried out to investigate practical application status of oral hygiene devices through making a survey of labor of the D industrial company-about carefully curing oral disease in home, the status of practical application of tooth brush, the status of practical application of fluoridated toothpaste, status of practical application of auxiliary oral hygiene devices, a motive use or unuse of auxiliary oral hygiene devices. 1. In home, carefully curing oral disease is dental caries(62.4%). 2. Status of practical application toothbrush showed the highest user ratio of mideum size(79.6%). 3. Showed the highest user ratio of horizontal plane toothbrush(73.5%). 4. Answerd don't take a prudent attitued in choice of fluoridated toothpaste(73.5%). 5. In the status of reconition of oral hygiene devices, showed the highest user ratio of eletric toothbrush(77.0%). 6. In the status of reconition of auxiliary oral hygiene devices, showed the highest user ratio of wooden wedge stimulator(89.4%)and gargle liquid(84.5%). In using of oral hygiene devices, showed the highest user ratio of electric toothbrush(13.3%), toohbrush for periodontal patients(2.7%). In using of auxiliary, wooden wedge stimulator (58.4%)and gargle liquid(41.2%). In effect using of oral hygiene devices showed the highest user ratio of denture brush(50.0%)and eletric toothbrush(43.3%), in effect using of auxiliary oral hygiene devices showed the highest user ratio of water pick(80.0%) and dental floss(75.8%). 6. A motive of the use auxiliary oral hygiene device is choice by oneself through TV, advertisement, public information(57.6%), and the reason-they don't use of auxiliary oral hygiene devicebecause of they don't know proper to them the kind of auxiliary oral hygiene device.

Efficacy of probiotics and coconut oil-based mouthrinses to improve oral health (프로바이오틱스와 코코넛 오일 기반 양치의 구강건강 개선 효과)

  • Objectives: We analyzed the relative beneficial impacts of probiotics and coconut oil-based mouth rinses on oral health. Methods : A total of 33 subjects were enrolled and randomly assigned to three groups. Coconut oil and probiotics were given to the experimental group, and distilled water to the control group. We evaluated the possession site of Gingival index, CPITN index, BOP, Pocket depth, and PHP index. Results: In the coconut oil and probiotic groups, Gingival index significantly decreased on both days 15 and 30. CPITN significantly decreased on days 15 and 30 in the coconut oil group (p<0.01), and on day 30 in the probiotic group (p=0.002). There was a significant interaction between group and time for BOP and PHP index (p<0.001), and the coconut oil group was more effective in improving BOP and PHP index. Conclusions: The above results showed that the mediation effect of coconut oil and probiotics was more effective with coconut oil.

Oral health behavior according to the experience of fluoride mouth rinse in some elementary school students (일부 초등학교 학생의 불소용액양치 유무에 따른 구강보건 행태 조사)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible differences in elementary schools jointed to fluoride mouth rinse plans in health centers. Methods : Students from the third to sixth grades filled out the questionnaires. Data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS 12.0. Results : The rate of a personal toothbrush holding and toothbrushing after lunch were higher in those who rinsed their mouths with fluoride than those who did not.(p<0.05). Toothbrushing by the rolling method was more prevailing in the students who rinsed their mouths with fluoride(57.0%) and having regular dental checkup(p<0.05) than in those who did not(39.8%). Conclusions : The students who had rinsed their mouths with fluoride showed the good oral health behavior. Continuing good quality of oral health care education must be provided to the students by professional dental hygienists.

Survey on the Changes of Potassium and Magnesium Concentration according to the Retention Time After Rinse of Sucrose and Glucose in Oral (구강 내 자당 및 포도당 잔류 경과 시간에 따른 칼륨과 마그네슘 농도 변화)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the salivary concentration of Potassium and Magnesium cations and their variation before and after sucrose and glucose rinse, and to investigate the relationship between the levels of each compound. Saliva samples were obtained from 40 subjects before and up to 60 min after intake of a 10% sucrose and glucose solution at 1-month intervals. Potassium and Magnesium in human saliva were determined via anion-exchange chromatography with an anion-suppressed conductivity detector using 12 mM sulfuric acid. The concentrations of Potassium and Magnesium before sucrose rinse were 274.3±77.9 mg/ℓ and 4.5±2.5 mg/ℓ, also, the concentrations of Potassium and Magnesium before glucose rinse were 279.2±62.1 mg/ and 4.8±2.0 mg/ℓ, respectively. Potassium and Magnesium concentrations were significantly decreased (p<0.05) after sucrose rinse. The content of potassium and magnesium in saliva before and after rinsing sucrose and glucose is difficult to standardize or classify, as previous research. The reason for the variation between individuals is large, and easily changed by chemical or physiological stimulation. However, this study was experiment for the purpose of accumulating basic data for saliva.

INHIBITORY EFFECT OF LACTOCOCCUS LACTIS 1370 ON THE FORMATION OF DENTAL PLAQUE IN CHILDREN (소아에서 Lactococcus lactis 1370에 의한 치태형성 억제 효과)

  • This study was undertaken to evaluate the clinical effect of inhibiting plaque formation of Lactococcus lactis 1370, a acid producing bacterium residing in the mouth. 30 children were asked to use 10ml of control mouth-wash and mouthwash containing Lactococcus lactis 1370. The plaque index and plaque area rate at 24h and 48h after the use of the mouthwashes were measured. And the number of Lactococcus lactis 1370 was counted at 1h, 3h, and 6h in the mouth. The results are as follow. 1. The mean plaque index at 24h after the use of the control mouthwash and the mouthwash containing Lactococcus lactis 1370 were 2.43 and 2.06, respectively. The inhibiting rate of plaque formation was 15% (P<0.05). 2. The mean plaque index at 48h after the use of the control mouthwash and the mouthwash containing Lactococcus lactis 1370 were 2.95 and 2.17, respectively. The inhibiting rate of plaque formation was 26%, showing more decrease than at 24h(P<0.05). 3. The mean plaque area rate at 24h after the use of the control mouthwash and the mouthwash containing Lactococcus lactis 1370 were 21.2% and 15.6%, respectively. The inhibiting rate of plaque formation was 26% (P<0.05). 4. The mean plaque area rate at 48h after the use of the control mouthwash and the mouthwash containing Lactococcus lactis 1370 were 33.0% and 17.8%, respectively. The inhibiting rate of plaque formation was 46% (P<0.05). 5. The number of Lactococcus lactis 1370 in the mouth decreased significantly from mouthwashing to 3h, but increased slightly between 3h and 6h. As seen with the above results, we think that using the mouth wash with Lactococcus lactis 1370 would prevent the formation of plaque in the mouth and can be an effective method to prevent dental caries and periodontal disease.

A Survey on Middle and High School Student's Behavior about The Use of Oral Hygiene Devices in Jeolla-Bukdo (전라북도 일부 지역 중·고등학생의 구강위생용품 사용 실태)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the actual state of middle and high school student's behavior about the use of oral hygiene devices for developing appropriate educational objectives to improve oral health. Data were collected by questionnaires from 445 middle and high school students in Jeolla-Bukdo, from April 20 to May 10, 2009. Surveyed data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2-test$ and t-test using SPSS V11.5 program. In the event of those who didn't use oral hygiene supplies, the largest group didn't use the devices since they didn't know about them well. Regarding links between experience of using oral hygiene devices and concern for oral health, those who received that education showed more interest in oral health, and the students who felt the need for that education had more interest than the others who didn't. The results of study suggest how to encourage students to utilize appropriate oral hygiene supplies and to help facilitate the development of school oral health education programs and the promotion of school oral health.

A Comparative the Assessment of Oral Health Plans in Schools for Disabled Youth in Different Regions (지역별 장애인 학교 구강보건사업 평가 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the oral health plans of 142 special schools for disabled youth in different regions across the nation based on the self-evaluation of their school nurses in an attempt to help improve school oral health plans and provide useful information on the planning of oral health plans for schools for disabled youth, as the oral health plans of special schools for disabled youth depended on local characteristics. As a result of make a synthetic evaluation, the oral health plans of special schools located in Gyeongsang Province ranked first, and those of special schools in Seoul scored low due to the smallest number of items included. And it's recommended to select separate objectives of oral health education geared toward physically disadvantaged children, to extend school fluoride mouth rinse and pit & fissure sealing projects, and to enhance the management of school dental clinics.

Antimicrobial Effect of Commercially Available Mouth Rinsing Solutions and Natural Herbal Extracts on Streptococcus mutans (시판되는 구강양치액과 천연한방 추출물의 Streptococcus mutans에 대한 항균효과 비교)

  • This study attempted to identify the possibility of natural herbal extracts as an alternative, preventive agent of caries by comparing antimicrobial activities between natural herbal extracts and mouth rinsing solutions against Streptococcus mutans. Natural herbal plants were extracted with distilled water and ethanol, respectively, to measure the minimum growth inhibitory concentration of S. mutans depending on concentration, and among which, solvents showing high antimicrobial activity were selected to compare their antibiotic effects with those of mouth rinsing solutions. Also, to determine the concentration of natural medicinal herbs that can be used safely in the oral cavity, the extracts were treated to the normal gingival fibroblast cells depending on concentration in order to determine its cytotoxicity using MTT. In terms of the minimum growth inhibition concentration, the growth inhibition of S. mutans was more excellent in the ethanol extract than in the distilled water. When the minimum growth inhibition concentration was compared, Psoralea corylifolia of natural herbal ethanol extracts, and Hexamedine (Bukwang Pharm., Korea) of mouth rinsing solutions inhibited growth of S. mutans at the lowest concentration. When the minimum bactericidal concentration was compared, P. corylifolia of natural herbal extracts, and Hexamedine and Garglin (Dong-A Pharm., Korea) of mouth rinsing solutions eliminated S. mutans at a low concentration. The human gingival fibroblast was treated with natural herbal ethanol extracts at the minimum growth inhibition concentration of 10, 39, and $78{\mu}g/ml$. As the result, no cytotoxicity was found. When this was treated at different minimum bactericidal concentrations, natural herbal ethanol extracts showed cytotoxicity except P. corylifolia.

Factors Affecting the Use of Oral Hygiene Devices in Adults (성인의 구강위생용품 사용 영향요인)

  • The purpose of this study is to verify factors affecting the use of dental hygiene care products in adults. The study used a nationally representative sample of Koreans (2013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) aged 19 years over (n=4,839). Dependent variable was frequency of tooth brushing per day, use of dental floss, use of interdental brush and use of mouth rinse. Independent variable was sociodemographic factors, health behaviors, perceived health and oral health conditions. The chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were performed to identify the factors affecting the use of dental hygiene care products. All analyses were performed using PASW Statistics version 18.0. Resulting of chi-square test, the use of oral hygiene care products was statistically significant with gender, age, education level, household income, marital status, dental utilization, dental examination. Resulting of logistic regression, in female, the higher the education level was identified as common factors for variables in use of dental hygiene care products. Dental hygienist among dental professionals should play an important role as contributor to the national oral health promotion that recognizes the impact of each factor by refining dental hygiene care products and reflect personal characteristics and preferences through the oral health educational media and program development.

PRESENT STATE AND PROSPECT OF PUBLIC DENTAL HEALTH SERVICE FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS IN KOREA (우리나라 어린이와 청소년의 구강건강을 위한 공공서비스의 현황과 전망)

  • To achieve the dental health of children and adolescents which is the objective of the pediatric dentistry, the role of the public service should be increased. The basis of the public service is established by many laws of which the Dental Health Law is most important. The percentages of primary schools that had the school dental health clinic, that implemented the fluoride rinsing program, and that implemented the group toothbrushing after lunch were 7.2%, 57.5%, and 46.9%, respectively, and the percentages of primary school children that received the dental health education and that received the fissure sealing were 48.0% and 12.4%, respectively(2006). About 42% of infants and preschool children from 0 to 6 years received preventive dental care in the last one year, at the nursery or kindergarten(18%) or at the health center(1%)(2005). The percentage of the health centers that implemented water fluoridation was 11.3%, and the percentage of the population who drank the fluoridated water was 5.7%(2006). It was suggested that the school dental health administration should be unified, that dental health teachers should be employed, and that the comprehensive dental health care should be supplied to all the children and adolescents through the circuit school dentists and the school dental hospitals in the long term. Also, the dentist in charge system for the children and adolescent was suggested.
