  • This study aims to review the characteristics of specialized classrooms for governmental secondary schools in the Japanese Colonial Era by analyzing architectural drawings collected by National Archives of Korea. The results of this study are summarized as follows 1) Under the influence of Japanese science promotion of that time, specialized classrooms for science were considered as one of essential facilities. Typically exclusive specialized classrooms were assigned to two major science subjects : physics-chemistry and biology. 2) To science specialized classrooms, ancillary rooms for preparation, experiment equipment and specimen were attached and science lecture room with stepped floor was planned additionally only for the lecture on theories and the demonstration of experiment. 3) Specialized classrooms for science were zoned independently of other facilities because of the special equipments and safety. 4) Art rooms were common to both boys' and girls' schools but concerning music rooms, girls' schools had special concerns, whereas boys' schools did not. 5) Specialized classrooms for homemaking subject of girls' school were as much important as those for science subjects of boys' school. 6) Some early-established Korean boys' schools had handicraft rooms which were the symbol of vocational education-oriented, unequal policy on Koreans. Though not general cases, specialized classrooms for geography-history were planned for Japanese boys' school. Restricted to governmental secondary schools but considering the uncommon state of specialized classrooms of that time, these characteristics show conditions of early time when special classrooms were introduced into Korea.

  • This study aims to investigate the awareness and policy demands of after school care classes of mothers with elementary school children. The participants of study were 25 mothers with elementary school children in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, Gangwon. Data collection was conducted from June 23, 2017 to July 18, 2017 by focus group interview. Through the data analysis, the results of the study were analyzed as 'the reality of the after school care class that the mother sees' and 'the policy demands of the mother's after school care class'. 'The reality of the after school care class that the mother sees' is 'the overall level of after school care class is low', 'the probability of selecting the same as a lottery', 'the quality of education that varies depending on the level of the teacher', 'for the child attending the care class negative awareness'. 'Mother's policy demands for after school care classes' are presented as 'positioning as a substitute for thinking and caring', 'improvement of separation between parents' expectations', 'expansion of care recipients', 'request for resilient management'. As the conclusion of this study, first, after school care classes need to focus on the care function. Second, it is necessary to operate after school care classes by level. Third, the realistic needs of mothers should be reflected so that after school care classes can be positioned as alternatives to private education.

  • In this study, we will analyze the classroom space of elementary schools that have implemented the Seoul Metropolitan Government's 'Dream Classroom' project and identify satisfaction and needs in terms of users. Primary school was selected and the composition and color of space was investigated by the present ministerial inspection. The survey was conducted on homeroom teachers and analyzed as SPSS/WIN Statistical Programme 22.0. The satisfaction level of space elements was verified by the technical statistical analysis, the general classroom and the 'classroom with dreams' difference in response t-test, the need for planning elements (criticality), and the difference in satisfaction with one way ANOVA. The space had the most separate, primary-colored classrooms. They preferred emotional factors and bright and light atmosphere for the lower grades, and the soft and soft atmosphere for the middle and high school students. The school preferred communication space with the community, proper play and relaxation space for the complex type of classroom. This will help set the direction for elementary school classroom space planning during the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

  • This study was to examine the differences of Korean and Chinese high school students on classroom goal structure(i.e., mastery, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance), help-seeking behavior(i.e., help-seeking, and help-seeking avoidance), and school engagement(i.e., behavioral, cognitive, and emotional), and to identify the mediating role of help-seeking behavior in the links between classroom goal structure and school engagement. The final samples consisted of 290 Korean and 294 Chinese students in high school. Results were as followed. Firstly, Chinese students had a higher classroom mastery goal structure, classroom performance-avoidance goal structure, help-seeking and emotional engagement than Korean students, whereas Korean students had a higher behavioral engagement than Chinese students. Secondly, for Korean students, help-seeking and help-seeking avoidance mediated between classroom mastery goal structure and school engagement. Moreover, for Korean students, help-seeking avoidance mediated between classroom performance-avoidance goal structure and school engagement. While, for Chinese students, help-seeking and help-seeking avoidance mediated between classroom performance-avoidance goal structure and school engagement. Also, for Chinese students, help-seeking avoidance mediated between classroom mastery goal structure and school engagement. Therefore, help-seeking should be promoted in order to improve students' school engagement, and classroom mastery goal structure need to be created in order to encourage students' help-seeking.
