  • The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that applied herbal medicine to treat viral hepatitis B and C in order to determine the therapeutic efficacy of herbal medicine. EMBASE, Pubmed, NDSL, KMBASE, KISS, KISTI, Koreamed, Koreantk, and Oasis databases were searched to identify RCTs. The selected studies were assessed by the Cochrane group's risk of bias tool. A total of 15 RCTs were selected, and the hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA reduction was significantly higher in patients treated with herbal medicine combined with Western medicine than in patients treated with herbal medicine. Herbal medicine combined with Western medicine was also superior to Western medicine alone in achieving hepatitis B e-antigen (HBeAg) and alanine aminotransferase [ALT] reduction. Only herbal medicine alone was not superior to Western medicine treatments in achieving HBV DNA, HBeAg, and ALT reduction.

  • One of difficulties with which teachers meet is to have underachievers with no willingness and motivation for study involved in class. Mathematics underachiever are average or above average in their intelligence but their actual achievement in mathematics did not coincide to their intellectual capabilities. The teaching strategy for them is to motivate them to try to study mathematics and to experience the improvement in their mathematics grade. In this paper, we choose flipped classroom as the strategy of teaching basic mathematics to math underachievers and applied it to them. Then we wanted to make sure the possibility for applying flipped classroom to teaching math underachievers through the analysis of change in the scholastic achievement of students in mathematics and mathematical disposition. The results of this study are as followings; First, when we taught basic math to underachievers using a flipped classroom, we confirm that math underachievers with active participation improved scholastic achievements significantly. Second, the flipped classroom was led to positive effects in an affective domain. In particular, it showed the most noticeable change in the area of willingness to math problem-solving and perception about the value of mathematics.

  • The purposes of this study are to develop a measuring instrument for perception of science classes based on the view of 'Community of Inquiry in Science Classroom' and to investigate elementary school students' perceptions with the instrument developed in the study. A total of 417 6th grade students participated in this study. As a result, first, we developed two set of questionnaire: (a) the questionnaire for the 'process of inquiry' consisted of six factors: 'problem recognition I: recognition of inconsistency,' 'problem recognition II: interests,' 'problem explanation I: hypothesis generation and examination,' 'problem explanation II: cooperative review,' 'problem solving I: reflection on the change of relationship with objects/conceptions,' and 'problem solving II: reflection on the change of relationship with community/ inquirer,' comprising a total of 42 items; (b) the questionnaire for the 'basis of inquiry' consisted of three factors:'will of conducting inquiry,' 'attitudes of conducting inquiry,' and 'structure of communication,' comprising a total of 17 items. Second, we found that elementary school students had positive recognition generally on their science classes in terms of the 'community of inquiry in science classroom,' but they had relatively negative recognition on the factors of problem recognition based on recognition of inconsistency, problem solving accompanied with reflection on the change of relationship with objects/conceptions, and attitudes of conducting inquiry based on severity and fallibilism, Finally, several suggestions for the science education were given.

  • This study attempted to understand the difficulties experienced in program development and class operation of instructors in the hands-on science class and the needs for training based on them. For this study, an online survey was conducted on 193 instructors in the hands-on science class in 2022, and interviews were conducted on 13 instructors. As a result, the difficulties of developing programs for hands-on science class instructors were due to lack of class content, lack of program development budget, lack of equipment necessary for class operation, and difficulty in applying various educational methods such as discussion and practice. The preferred training contents were in the order of the latest science and technology, reconstruction methods of existing programs, and regional specialization technology. In addition, it was found that the difficulties experienced by instructors in class management stemmed from the method of operating hands-on science classes using experience kits. Accordingly, instructor education should be provided in the direction of helping instructors to provide the best education in the situation of the hands-on science classroom.

  • This study aimed to evaluate the academic effectiveness of non-face-to-face classes in deciduous tooth morphology practice. Under the course name dental morphology, a total of 60 dental students took face-to-face classes while 55 pre-dental students took non-face-to-face classes. Students were required to submit their practical assignments after 5 weeks of practical classes. To evaluate the academic effectiveness of non-face-to-face classes, practical assignments were scored by an evaluator and compared with face-to-face classes using the Mann-Whitney U test and the chi-square test. The results showed that the practical score in face-to-face classes was 77.43 ± 5.97 and the practical score in non-face-to-face classes was 76.04 ± 5.83. There was no significant difference in the academic effectiveness of face-to-face classes compared to non-face-to-face classes in deciduous tooth morphology practice (p > 0.05). This study suggests that non-face-to-face classes on introductory practice such as the dental morphology course can provide comparable quality to the education taught in traditional face-to-face classes.

  • We need to reflect the establishment of meaning and level of 'proof and argumentation in middle school mathematics'. It should be considered as human activity through communication in community. Thus, we should design instruction from this standpoint. From this point of view, we had been operated 'Geometry Inquiry Class' aimed at middle school students in eighth grade for two years to improve current geometry class in middle school. In this study, we will observe how individual students' original proof schemes are developed and accepted to the class through the process of mutual negotiation between the teacher and students. The episode with four phases begins with the initial proof schemes students have offered. Through the negotiation of class participants, it gives birth to the proof scheme unique to the current geometry classroom. Why do we pay attention to the process? It is because we think that the value of this type of instruction lies in the process of communication and mutual understanding and mutual reference, not in the completeness of the final product. This is the very appropriate proof in the middle school mathematics classroom.
