Comparison of Career Awareness, the Preference for Science and Stereotypic Image of the Scientist Between the Gifted Students and Non-gifted Students in Elementary School (초등 영재학생과 일반학생의 진로인식, 과학 선호도 및 과학자의 정형화된 이미지 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the career awareness, the preference for science and stereotypic image of the scientist between the gifted students and non-gifted students in elementary school. For this study, 52 gifted students and 80 non-gifted students were participated. The results were as follows: First, the career awareness of gifted students was significantly higher than that of non-gifted students. Second, the preference for science of gifted students was significantly higher in all sub-domains than non-gifted students. There was a significant interaction effect between group and gender in the scientific interest and the intention of solving problems. Third, analyzing stereotypic image test for scientist between the gifted students and non-gifted students, it proved that non-gifted students had more stereotypic image comparing with the gifted students. Forth, carrying out the correlation analysis on the career awareness and the preference for science, the career awareness and the stereotypic image of the scientist, it proved that there were significant correlations with each other. It revealed that the career awareness affected the preference for science significantly through multiple regression analysis.

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the Korean youths' impressions of the scientist. The concept of impression is assumed to reflect our significant view of an object better than that of image. That is, the basic assumption is that we tend to behave toward an object, based on its impression which is conceived to be "significant". In late August and early September 2002, a national survey for 1,204 youth (406 for 5th grad; 381 for 8th grade; and 417 for 11th grade) was conducted to find the Korean youths' impressions of the scientist. Our major finding is that the Korean youths' most impressions of the scientist were re his or her activities such as inventing, experimenting, researching, etc. And the major sources of those impressions were found to be television, book, and class. Other findings were about youths' impressions of the science teacher and opinions of the scientist as a profession. Finally, some policy-related implications based on survey results were presented at the end.

  • 한국기초과학지원연구원(KBSI, Korea Basic Science Institute)에서는 국내 유일의 초고전압투과전자현미경(HVEM, High Voltage Electron Microscopy)을 비롯하여 3대의 일반투과 전자현미경을 보유하고 있다. 전자현미경을 통하여 관찰된 이미지는 각 단계별로 tilting 되어 저장된 이미지로서 관찰자에게 보다 나은 관찰 환경의 구성을 위해 3D로의 reconstruction은 필수 과정이라고 할 수 있겠다. 이 과정 중 카메라 중심에서 벋어난 부분의 왜곡을 워핑기법을 통하여 최대한 감소시킨다. 이런 전처리 과정을 통하여 3D 구조물을 구성하게 되면 초기 이미지를 그대로 사용하는 것보다 한 단계 더 나은 결과물을 얻어낼 수 있다. 이미지 전처리를 이용한 전자현미경 볼륨 랜더링 시스템의 구축은 관찰자에게 보다 편리하며 빠른 실험 환경을 제공하여 줄 수 있고, 이해하기 쉽고 실제 모습에 가까운 형태의 실험 결과물을 접할 수 있게 된다.

The Effect of Interview with Scientist and Engineer on the Science Career Orientation and Image of Scientists (과학기술자와의 인터뷰가 과학 진로 지향 및 과학자 이미지에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of interview with a scientist and engineer on service performance assessment on science career orientation and image of scientists. Science track students in the 11th grade carried out the interviews and made powerpoint presentations. After the students' presentation in the chemistry class, the teacher made comments on the contents of the interviews. Students gave presentation in each class for a year. Before starting this assessment, students took science career orientation questionnaire and DAST (draw-a-scientist-test). These two tests were conducted again at the end of the year. The results of this study showed that there was no significant difference between pre- and post-test score for the science career orientation. However, a significant difference was observed in the 'preference for science learning' category. These results showed that the career decision of a high school student has already been fixed rigidly. On the other hand, there was a significant difference (p < 0.01) between pre- and post-test on the image of scientists. This demonstrated that the stereotypic image for a scientist was reduced by the interview performance assessment and that, students came to have an affirmative perception of scientists on service.

  • Requirement of effective image handling methods such as image retrieval has been increasing with the rising production and consumption of multimedia data. In this paper, a method of constructing more effective descriptor is proposed for robust keypoint based image retrieval. The proposed method uses information embedded in the first order and second order derivative images, in addition to the scale space image, for the descriptor construction. The performance of multi-image descriptor is evaluated in terms of the similarities in keypoints with a public domain image database that contains various image transformations. The proposed descriptor shows significant improvement in keypoint matching with minor increase of the length.

  • 가상머신을 사용자에게 좀 더 빨리 서비스하기 위해서 서비스 제공자들은 여유 가상머신이나 여유 이미지를 두는 방식을 취해왔으나 이는 근본적인 해결책이 되지는 못했다. 본 논문에서는 가상머신 이미지를 복사하는 시간을 LVM을 이용하여 최소화함으로써 가상머신이 필요한 순간에 필요한 이미지를 이용하여 실시간으로 생성될 수 있도록 설계하였다. 특히 가상머신 이미지의 크기에 무관한 시간이 소요되며 다수의 이미지를 동시에 생성할 시에도 좋은 성능을 보였다.

The Relationship between Students' Images of Science and Science Learning and Their Science Career Choices (중학생들의 과학과 과학 학습에 대한 이미지와 과학 진로 선택 사이의 관계)

  • This study attempts to identify the relationship between students' images of science and science learning, and their career choices. A total of 163 students (seventh graders) from three different middle schools participated in this study. Students' images of science and science learning were investigated using the Draw-A-Scientist Test (DAST) and the Draw-A-Science-Learner Test (DASLT), respectively. Then, students' drawings were analyzed using the Draw-A-Scientist Test Checklist (DAST-C) and the Draw-A-Science-Learner Test Checklist (DASLT-C). The relationship between each element composing the students' images and their career choices were analyzed. Among several elements constituting the students' image of science, 'expression,' 'lab coat,' 'oddity,' 'knowledge symbol,' 'technology symbol,' 'co-work,' 'danger,' and 'STS' showed significant differences between students who chose a science-related career and students who did not. It was also revealed that the following elements - 'expression,' 'learning type,' 'inquiry symbol,' and 'learning place' - were more significantly associated with a science-related career choice compared to other elements consisting of an image of science learning.

The Effect on Image Perception of Male Wearer with Chromatic-Achromatic Colors and Area-Radio of Stripe Necktie (스트라이프 넥타이의 유채-무채 배색과 면적비가 남성복 착용자의 이미지 지각에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aims to characterize the effect of different combinations of chromatic-achromatic colors and area-ratio of stripe necktie, and gender on the image of male wearer. The experimental materials developed for this study are a set of stimuli and response scales. The stimuli consist of 84 color pictures manipulated with every combination of 12 different colors and 7 different area-ratio. The 7-point scale designed for visual evaluation of image formation included 26 bipolar adjectives. The subjects were 2016 undergraduate students in Gyeongnam, Seoul, Busan, and Daegu areas. The results of this study were as follows.; The analyses of images of male wearer in terms of combinations of chromatic-achromatic colors and area-ratio of oblique stripe necktie reveal that the concerned factors are of five characteristic dimensions of youth-activity, ability, attractiveness, appeal, and warmness. In addition, it has been found that individual images of male wearer are affected by observer's gender as well as combinations of chromatic-achromatic colors and area-ratio of stripe neckties and that those images vary with every combination of each factor. The study results are highly expected to be used as useful sources in developing necktie designs.
