  • The expansion of human activities and road development has led to the loss and fragmentation of ecological spaces, which is a negative factor for biodiversity. In particular, urban areas where land use and land cover have rapidly changed into urbanization zones are regions where ecological spaces are lost and isolated, making it difficult for wildlife to inhabit. Furthermore, the loss and fragmentation of ecological spaces due to urbanization can have a negative impact on ecosystem services. Therefore, to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services in urban and national land, it is necessary to establish a practical ecological axis that reflects the current status of the city. Thus, this study analyzed the connectivity of ecological spaces and forest axis that can be used for spatial planning related to urban ecological axis of local governments in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do. The ecological connectivity was analyzed by dividing the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region into 31 local government units, distinguishing between forests and natural areas using land cover data. Subsequently, the study area was divided into 20,483 hexagonal grids of 1 square kilometer each, and the restoration effects for ecological fragmentation within 100 meters were spatially clustered to visualize priority restoration areas. The forest axis was derived by considering regional conditions such as land cover, building area, slope, and others to connect 1,534 forests of 100 hectares or more. The research results are expected to be used as fundamental data for spatial planning, goal setting, and the selection of restoration areas for improving ecological connectivity.

  • This paper, at first, intends to develop a conceptual model of spatial information eco-system based on the related literature reviews. The basic requirements in constructing the model are also specified. Next, the functional roles and interrelationships among the actors constituting the eco-system are analyzed to investigate the major reasons of inefficient and unsmooth flows of value-added process of Korean spatial information industry. Especially, the Korea Cadastral Survery Corp.(KCSC), which has dual organizational characteristics of public and private entity, is analyzed to be positioned as the most dominant actors in the eco-system. However, the KCSC needs to be changed and challenged to re-establish the missions and institutional roles for upcoming network societies. Here, we proposed 4 future-oriented development strategies and action plans to promote the Korean spatial information industry and to activate the eco-system.

  • As a result of the current trend towards promoting conservation of the ecosystem, there have been various studies conducted to determine ways to establish an ecological network. The development of analytical methods and an environmental database of GIS has made the creation of this network more efficient. This study focuses on the development of an urban spatial decision support system based on 'Landscape Ecology Theory'. The spatial decision support system suggested in this study consists of four stages. First, landscape patch for the core areas, which are major structures of the ecological network, was determined using the GIS overlay method. Second, a forest habitat was investigated to determine connectivity assessment. Using the gravity model, connectivity assessment at the habitat forest was conducted to select the needed connecting area. Third, the most suitable corridor routes for the eco-network were presented using the least-cost path analysis. Finally, a brief investigation was conducted to determine the conflict areas between the study result and landuse. The results of this study can be applied to urban green network planning. Moreover, the method developed in this study can be utilized to control urban sprawl, promote biodiversity.

  • These days open source softwares are being introduced and applied in many countries in the world. Especially, both government and private companies tend to become an spearhead in vitalizing the open source software. In this paper we try to check the degree of vitalizations in open source GIS software and to draw implications in vitalizing ecosystem of open source GIS software. Key players of open source GIS software ecosystem are government, private companies, academic and research institutes, and nonprofit foundations. Government does not have very little policies related to the investment and the support of open source GIS software. Private companies related to the open source GIS software are very few in the number and do not have any clear business model to make a profit. Academic and research institutes are weak in using the open source GIS software, which can be an major obstacle to cultivate software developers. OSGeo Korean branch, established in 2009, is the only nonprofit foundation in Korea which makes an effort to vitalize the open source GIS software, but its results are not very strong up to now in view of both quality and invigoration. In order to vitalize the open source GIS software ecosystem, lots of efforts of key players are needed. Especially, government efforts are very important because it can provide a trigger in vitalizing the open source GIS software ecosystem. The tasks that government should propel are R&D investment, test bed projects in the area of public sector, professional manpower training, and international cooperation and marketing.
