  • This paper studies impact performance of wire-mesh and steel fiber-reinforced concrete based on high-velocity impact experiments using hard spherical balls. In this experimental study, panel specimens were tested with various parameters such as steel fiber volume fraction, presence/absence of wire mesh, panel thickness, impact velocity, and aggregate size for the comparison of impact resistance performance for each specimen. While improvement of the impact resistance for reducing the penetration depth is barely affected with steel fiber volume fraction, the impact resistance to scabbing and perforation is improved substantially. This was due to the fact that the steel fiber had bridging effects in concrete matrix. The wire mesh helped minimizing the crater diameter of front and back face and enhanced the impact resistance to scabbing and perforation; however, the wire mesh did not affect the penetration depth. The wire mesh also reduced the bending deformation of the specimen with wire mesh, though some specimens had splitting bond failure on the rear face. Additionally, use of 20 mm aggregates is superior to 8 mm aggregates in terms of penetration depth, but for reducing the crater diameter on front and back faces, the use of 8 mm aggregates would be more efficient.

  • With increasing underwater structure construction, there is high interest in offshore foundation and underwater grout and various study has been done in this area. For grout materials constructed underwater, it may be washed away by water or easily disturbed and material separation phenomenon during curing period always happens. As a result, it is difficult to ensure construction quality and this has a significant influence on the design strength of structure. In this study, to understand application effects of anti-washout admixture for the preplaced construction method, where grout is injected in monopile after filled with aggregates, laboratory tests on bleeding and compressive strength of anti-washout admixture were performed under various test conditions varying size of aggregate, water and cement ratio and admixture, and test results were compared and evaluated.

  • In this study, a series of uniaxial unconfined compression test and constant-head test were performed to investigate the mechanical characteristics of porous concrete using recycled-aggregate for the varying unit weight and water-cement ratio. To enhance the permeability of the porous concrete, the recycled-aggregate with similar grain size in the range of $40{\pm}5mm$ was used and water-cement ratio that leads to the lean-mix was adapted. The mechanical characteristics of the porous concrete cured for 3 days were examined; the compressive strength and $E_{50}$ showed their maximum values with 40% water-cement ratio and $1.8t/m^3$ unit weight and the permeability coefficient was averagely measured in the range of $0.9{\times}10^0cm/sec$ regardless of water-cement ratio and unit weight.

  • This study aims to completely develop a non sintered cement mortar using industrial by-products. To replace Portland cement, blast furnace slag, circulating fluidized bed fly ash, and pulverized coal fly ash were used, and natural aggregates were substituted with ferronickel slag. To understand the characteristics of the non sintered cement mortar to which ferronickel slag is applied, an experiment was conducted by classifying the particle size. Fluidity and workability were confirmed through the flow test, and bending and compressive strength tests were conducted at 3, 7, and 28 days of age. In addition, durability was identified through a chloride ion penetration test. Through the study, it is judged that the binder, which completely replaced cement and aggregate, has high potential of being used as a construction material. Notably, it was confirmed to be advantageous for strength and durability.

  • In this research, the microwave oven drying method was investigated as a potential accurate testing approach for determining the water content of fresh concrete. To do so, water content estimation formulas employed in three prominent oven drying test methods were selected, and the calculation principles for each equation, along with potential error factors arising during the actual testing process, were considered. Moreover, a concrete test was conducted to validate the possible error factors. Consequently, it was confirmed that estimation errors in the water content of fresh concrete can occur due to sample deviations arising during the wet screening process for creating mortar specimens or deviations in the coarse aggregate sampling quantity during the sample collection process.

  • This study aims to develop a thermally conductive backfill by applying the prepacked concrete concept, in which a coarse aggregate with relatively high thermal conductivity was first filled and then the voild filled with grout. Backfill with improved thermal conductivity can increase the heat exchange efficiency of underground heat exchangers or underground transmission facilities. The backfills was prepared by using crushed concrete as the coarse aggregate, fly ash-based grout, and a small amount of cement for solidification. The results of this study showed that the fly ash-cement-sand-based grout with a flow of at least 450 mm accor ding to ASTM D 6103 could fill the void of pr epactked coar se aggr egates with a maximum size of 25 mm. The thermal conductivity of the backfil with coarse aggregate was over 1.7 W/m·K, which was higher than that of grout-type backfills.

  • The mixed body of clay and flyash containing unburnt carbon was examined at various sintering conditions in order to recycle flyash as environment-affinitive construction materials. Experimental results can be summarized as follows : when large aggregate of 2.54 cm dia. was sintered at a heating rate of $20^{\circ}C$/min, heterogeneous phase with bulgings, inner pores, and cracks were observed at the sintering temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$. Accordingly, heating patterns for the complete removal of the heterogeneous phase were proposed as countermeasures. The compressive strength of finally obtained aggregate was 670~870kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, which is over two and a half times stronger than the minimum requirement of 200kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

  • In order to capture the fast crack propagation in an unmanipulated concrete fracture test, we employed mechanoluminascent(ML) material, which emits visible light when stressed, as a crack visualization tool. Three-point bending fracture test setup, a paint type ML material and a high speed camera were used to capture the images of fast moving cracks. The maximum size of coarse aggregates of concrete was used as an experimental parameter. The crack images, loading, and crack mouth opening displacement were successfully recorded as a function of time elapsed. From the test results, several interesting cracking behavior in the unmanipulated fracture test was observed in such that (1) the crack moves fast while the load is slowly decreased after the maximum loading, and (2) the crack in concrete with larger coarse aggregates moves faster than the others.

  • Shear characteristics of quarry blasted rocks were compared using large scale direct shear tests and triaxial tests. For comparison purpose, similar test conditions were simulated as much as possible and three types of relative density (50%, 70%, 90%) were employed for the test. Results indicate that stress-strain behavior shows the same trend for two tests, but the measured shear strengths differ for the different test ms and depends on the relative density. At low relative density, the internal friction angles from direct shear test are smaller than those from triaxial tests. However, at high relative density, this phenomenon is reversed.

  • Due to recent climate abnormalities, the form of rainfall is changing to localized torrential rains. Localized torrential rains cause flooding in urban areas. In addition, in various industrial fields, there are cases where materials necessary for the process are kept outdoors, and damage from material loss and flooding of stockyards occurs during heavy rain. Accordingly, it is necessary to introduce a drainage layer where flooding is expected. This drainage layer places the aggregate inside and allows rainwater to penetrate and drain into the voids between the aggregates. However, the amount of voids differs according to the particle size distribution and particle size of the aggregate, and the drainage performance varies according to the compositional location of the aggregate. Therefore, in this study, the drainage characteristics according to the particle size, particle size, and compositional location of aggregates are analyzed using a fluid analysis program.
