  • The research of nutritional physiology of soybeans has been conducted based upon investigation of growth and harvest depending upon whether manuring was done eariler or later. It has been found out that manuring during the development period of the first compound leaves has resulted in a conspicuous improvement in growth and harvest, and that, though manuring during development period of the sixth compound leaves has not caused better results in comparison with the above case, comparatively good results have been arrived at. It has also been discovered that manuring after the flowering period has brought about a great difference. Particulary manuring after the period of pod adhesion has made little significance. And investigation of the accumulative process of carbohydrate has shown that both the total carbohydrates and soluble sugar have a particular variation-curve with regards to each organ, depending a manuring period. But the remarkable fact has been that later manuring has not indicated any variation-curve that is needed for normal growth. It has been indicated that, in case of earlier manuring, accumulation of photosynthesis has been remarkable, which is due to increase in nitrogen components in a body on account of absorption of nitrogen from fertilizer components. It has been suggested that the quantity of carbohydrates in case of earlier or later manuring has shown a partial significance in the effect of fertilizer.

  • A Propeller design method using the newly developed blade section(KH18), which behaves better cavitation characteristics, is presented. Experimental results for two-dimensional foil sections show that the lift-drag curve and the cavitation-free bucket diagram of the new blade section are wider comparing to those of the existion NACA sections. This characteristic of the new section is particularly important for marine propeller applications since angle of attack variation of the propeller blade operating behind a non-uniform ship's wake is relatively large. A lifting surface theory is used for the design of a propeller with the developed section for a 2700 TEU container ship. Since the most suitable chordwise loading shape is not known a priori, chordwise loading shape is chosen as a design parameter. Five propellers with different chordwise loading shapes and different foil sections are designed and tested in the towing tank and cavitation tunnel at KRISO. It is observed by a series of extensive model tsets that the propeller(KP197) having the chordwise loading shape, which has less leading edge loading at the inner radii and more leading edge loading at the outer radii of 0.7 radius, has higher propulsive efficiency and better cavitation characteristics. The KP197 propeller shows 1% higher efficiency, 30% cavitation volume reduction and 9% reduction of fluctuating pressure level comparing to the propeller with an NACA section. More appreciable efficiency gain for the new blade section propeller would be expected by reduction of expanded blade area considering the better cavitation characteristics of the new blade section.

  • We forecast the performance of the Korean biotechnology industry by adopting similar development paths taken by the U.S. biotechnology and Korean ICT industries. Our long-term forecasting techniques predict that Korean BT market size will increase from 3.7 billion to 10.8 billion U.S. dollars by year 2030. The pharmaceutical industry, one of major bio-subindustries, is expected to dominate Korean BT market in the long-run. Also, the relative portion of the exports in the Korean BT industry will be larger and thus the export-oriented government policy is required for the long-run growth of the Korean BT industry. Since the Korean ICT industry has already slowed down in the development, Korean BT industry is likely to catch up with ICT industry in the near future.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze Descartes's point of view on the mathematical connection of algebra and geometry which help comprehend the traditional frame with a new perspective in order to access to unsolved problems and provide useful pedagogical implications in school mathematics. To achieve the goal, researchers have historically reviewed the fundamental principle and development method's feature of analytic geometry, which stands on the basis of mathematical connection between algebra and geometry. In addition we have considered the significance of geometric solving of equations in terms of analytic geometry by analyzing related preceding researches and modern trends of mathematics education curriculum. These efforts could allow us to have discussed on some opportunities to get insight about mathematical connection of algebra and geometry via geometric approaches for solving equations using the intersection of curves represented on coordinates plane. Furthermore, we could finally provide the method and its pedagogical implications for interpreting geometric approaches to cubic equations utilizing intersection of conic sections in the process of inquiring, solving and reflecting stages.

  • Various species of the genus Capsicum contain in their fruits an intensively sharp and pungent substance, Capsaicin, which was first isolated in an almost pure state by Thresh. Containing the pungent principle, Capsicums are used extensively in food as a spice and in medicine as a rubefacient and carminative. Numerous methods have been proposed for the isolation, the chemical structure and the quantitative determination of Capsaicin. Modifying the several methods described before, the Capsaicin contents in various species of the genus Capsicum were determined as follows. (1) The isolation of pure Capsaicin was the essential first step for the determination of Capsaicin contents. Powdered cayenne pepper was extracted with acetone. By the method of ether alkali partition extraction slightly modified at this laboratory and by the recrystallization with light petroleum ether that was repeated ten times, the pure crystalline Capsaicin was obtained. Using this Capsaicin, the standard absorption curve was drawn with Beckman spectrophotometer model DU for the quantitative determination of Capsaicin. 92) The powdered sample was extracted in a Soxhlet extractor with ether-acetone solvent system(3:1) for 25 hours. Capsaicin in this ether-acetone extracts was efficiently separated in a pure state by paper partition chromatography using 58% methanol solution as developing agent. It was found that 58% methanol was one of the most valuable solvent to separate Capsaicin from impurities such as sterols, fatty acids, waxes and carotenoid pigments. (3) The colorimetric method modifying the Schulte-Kruger's method which consists of measuring the red color produced with diazobenzenesulphonic acid was used. Capsaicin in various species of the genus Capsicum was determined quantitatively with use of Beckman spectrophotometer model DU at $480\;m{\mu}$.

  • In the horizontally curved bridges, girders are subjected to the combined action of vertical bending and torsion due to their curvatures without any eccentric loads. As subjected to bending and torsion, the ultimate strength of steel/concrete composite box girders are limited by the diagonal tensile stress in the deck concrete induced by the St. Venant torsion. To determine the ultimate strength of composite box girders in bending and torsion and their interactions, this study conducted a 3-dimensional FEA and classical strength of materials investigation. Using ABAQUS, the FEA fully utilized advanced nonlinear analysis techniques simulating material/geometrical nonlinearity and post-cracking behaviors. The ultimate strength from numerical data were compared with theoretically derived values. Concurrent compressive stresses in the concrete deck improve the shear-resisting capacity of concrete, thereby resulting in an increased torsional resistance of the composite box girder in positive bending. The proposed interaction equation is very simple yet it provides a rational lower bound in determining the ultimate strength of concrete/steel composite box girders.

  • A design method for a perforated panel is suggested to reduce the level of incident noise without obstructing the flow of incoming fluid. The key idea was to insert an array of 1/4 wavelength tubes around the holes of the perforate panel. First, various case studies were performed for a unit model with only one hole. In order to avoid any increase in the panel thickness, the unit model was vertically divided into three layers, and only the middle layer was used as the design domain. The number and array of 1/4 wavelength tubes connected to the hole were optimized to obtain the widest effective frequency range in the transmission loss curve as possible. Then, the optimally designed unit model was converted to a periodic array in the perforated panel to achieve the design goals. Even if the target frequency and the target transmission loss were set to 1000 Hz and 10 dB, respectively, the suggested design method for the a perforated panel could achieve noise reduction for various target values.

  • To verify reinforcing effect of grouting materials on the water leakage region in dike, we performed various hydraulic test and we also applied electric resistivity survey including electrical resistivity tomography(ERT) to see resistivity variation before and after grouting. As the results of dipole-dipole array survey along dike, resistivity distribution after grouting was without noticeable spatial variation. Long term resistivity monitoring results at dike with Schlumberger array electric resistivity survey showed that the decreasing region of apparent resistivity and one dimensional inversion results were the occupied region by grout after grouting. From the ERT using check holes to inspect the effect of grouting, we could find that the ERT is quite effective to evaluate spatially grout region in dike.

  • In the evaluation of the subgrade stiffness structure by the SASW method, the calculation of the phase velocities is the important task controlling the reliability of the result. The interpretation of the phase spectrum should precede the phase-velocity calculation in the current practice of the SASW method. The difficulty involved in the interpretation prohibited the SASW method from being spread over to the industry. This study proposed a new method called the frequency-wave number technique, which is based on the frequency-wave number relationship of the surface wave in the multi-layered system. The frequency-wave number technique eliminates the expertise in the interpretation of the phase spectrum, automates the phase-velocity calculation and expedites the determination of the phase-velocity dispersion curve. To verify the validity of the proposed frequency-wave number method, the transfer function determined from the numerical simulation of the SASW measurements was used fir the calculation of the automatic calculation of the phase velocities and compared with the phase velocities by WinSASW employing the phase-unwrapping method. Also, the proposed method was applied to the real SASW measurements performed at$\bigcirc$$\bigcirc$area in GyeongGi-Do to see how the proposed method works with the real measurements.
