A Study on Interrelationship between Narrative and Genres of Computer Games (컴퓨터게임의 서사와 장르의 상관관계에 관한 고찰)

  • This article attempts to suggest a frame of game genres by appling the concept of narrative. The narrative is traditional and useful concept in game study, though the narrative of computer games is under discussion. In the main discourse, syntagmatic/paradigmatic character of narrative and the rate of importance of narrative in the game are used for two axis to set the location of computer game genres. As a result, I could find the location of computer game genres that reflects the characters of narrative.

  • Most of the games in the RTS genre, including games such as Starcraft and LOL, which are considered the most successful works in E-sports, have become increasingly uniform and boring. In order to make more changes in a uniform and boring system, I thought it could be solved through a combination of genres that have been fully developed and verified, so I tried to present a new game paradigm. To this end, let's focus on the genres of RTS andt TCG among the popular game genres and present a new paradigm by combining the dynamic and static features of these two genres. The new Real-Time Trading Card (RTTC) genre of game system proposed in this paper refers to a new type of game system that fuses the dynamic and static elements of the game. This mixed genre can be a new paradigm for games that can satisfy both gamers and viewers by minimizing the uniformity of the game while adding the randomness of cards to the characteristics of RTS called real-time warfare.

Market Success factors of Mobile Games: Differences by Genres and Changes over Time (모바일 게임의 시장 성공 요소: 게임 장르별 차이와 출시 후 시간 경과에 따른 변화)

  • After the introduction stage, Korean mobile game market is approaching to the growing stage leading mobile contents market. The environment for the mobile contents business is getting better by the expansion of the 3G mobile networks and the enhancement of the mobile devices. In this research, at a content level, not a service level, market success factors of mobile games and the differences by genres and their changes over time were investigated through the analysis of the real market data of mobile games launched by a Korean mobile carrier. The most important factors for market success, especially for the genres of RPG/Tycoon/Simulation and Shooting/Action/Arcade, were found to be the 'design' factor and its effect turned to be getting stronger as time goes by after the launch. Consumers' purchase rate was actually higher for the mobile games of popular genres or in relation with socially popular subject matters. Also 'design' and 'creativity' factors which are related to the quality of contents, have gotten more important over time. One of the most interesting results was that there existed a "blue ocean" genres like Sports/Racing/Leisure which had a steady demand but not many competing games. In the analysis of the 'convenience' factor, one interesting implication for mobile game producers was that there exists a trade off between the ease of initial adoption and the steady sales of a mobile game.

  • As fusion and composition of a game genre is actively achieved, game types where various genres coexist in a game increase. These games have advantage providing various funnies to game players. This study examines and analyzes game examples of fusion and composition genre that appear in the game market in accordance with such a trend. We suggested a game that can give new joy to players by application of fusion and composition of genre within the body type that can provide directly virtual experience of the given game situation on the base of this study.

  • By integrating of intrinsic motivation theory and flow theory, this study sought to investigate the causal linkage among optimal balance of video game player's perceived skill and challenge, flow experience, intrinsic motivation and video game genre usage. A path analysis showed that the different types of video game usage were directly influenced by players' intrinsic motivations, which were also reinforced by players' flow experiences of enjoyment. However, the path model with a multiple group approach provided no strong evidence for gender differences in the relationships between the variables of interest.

  • This study assumed the competitive structure based on genre classification for Korean online game contents market, and carried out the analysis on the degree and characteristics of the competition that appear differently in each sub market classified according to the genre. First, to analyze the market power of the rank 1 and 2 game contents in each genre, using the play time share ratio and standard deviation statistics values in the genre, ANOVA analysis and Cluster analysis were carried out for each genre. According to ANOVA analysis result, in the rank 1 game share ratio in each genre, there was a relationship of 'FPS/Racing > RST/Sports > Poker > Go-stop > RPG > Arcade > Board', and in the play time total share ratio of rank 1 and 2 games, the relationship of 'RTS > FPS/Racing > Sports > RPG > Go-stop > Poker > Arcade > Board' was verified. And in Cluster analysis, the groups of the genres with the degree of market power tendency and the variability at similar level were classified and stated.

  • While the period of 40 million smart phone users begins, mobile game has spread and evolved as quick as popularization of smart phone. Therefore, this study is written to help the improvement of a graphic image on a development of a game for a qualitative growth of a game market, and is to suggest a guideline of tone by genres, by measuring image or feeling of game genre targeting game users. As a result of study, more than 50% of adjectives game users wrote by genres corresponded. It means that tone game users prefer is relatively clear. Therefore, the researcher confirmed that it is possible to attempt the standardization of tome about genre, and suggested 3 kinds of tone and brightness of color by genres. The researcher hopes that this result of the study will help smooth color plan on a development of smart phone game, and that more diverse studies will be proceeded for a qualitative growth of a game market arriving at puberty.

  • 2017년, '플레이어언노운스 배틀그라운드' 얼리 액세스 버전의 큰 성공으로 슈팅 게임 장르의 크나큰 변화가 일어났다. 수많은 유저들이 시간이 지날수록 압박해오는 전장과 1등에 근접할수록 높아지는 긴장감, 치열한 접전 끝에 1등을 차지하는 희열에 매료되어 세계적으로 선풍적인 인기를 끌게 되었다. 그러나 시간이 지날수록 유저들의 평균적인 게임 이해도와 실력이 늘어남에 따라 한번 실수에도 치명적인 영향을 받는 장르 특성상 모험보단 안전을 추구하고자 하였고 많은 배틀로얄 게임들이 전략의 고착화, 사용 장비의 고착화가 점점 심화되었다. 본 논문에서는 배틀로얄 장르의 고착화가 어떻게 이루어졌는지 수치와 통계를 통해 설명하고 효율적으로 고착화를 타파하기 위한 새로운 방안을 제시한다.

  • TCG는 Trading Card Game의 약자로 수집과 게임을 목적으로 디자인된 카드게임을 일컫는다. TCG는 1993년 미국의 수학자인 리처드 가필드(Richard Garfield)가 만든 '매직: 더 개더링'(Magic: The Gathering)을 시작으로 '스펠파이어'(Spellfire), '일루미나티'(Illuminati)와 같은 다양한 게임으로 이어지며 하나의 독자적인 장르로 자리매김하게 되었다. TCG는 전략적 게임 디자인을 통한 독자적 장르의 재미도 가지고 있지만, 수집 요소가 가진 장점으로 인해 많은 타 장르 게임에서 혼합되어 사용되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 최초의 TCG인 '매직: 더 개더링'의 분석을 통해 다양한 덱을 만들어내는 방법에 대해 연구하고 나아가 타 장르 활용 방안에 대하여 제시하고자 한다.

  • 게임의 평가모델은 게임의 성공적 개발을 위하여 다양한 방향으로 연구되어 왔다. 특히 게임의 사전 평가는 게임의 성공을 견인하는 중요 요소로 인식되어 왔다. 다양한 장르의 게임을 평가하는 연구가 있어왔으나 4차 산업을 대두로 기술적 발달에 근거한 가상현실 게임과 증강 현실 게임 평가 항목은 연구 결과가 많지 않았다. 특히 증강 현실 게임에 중점하여 평가 항목을 연구한 결과는 전무한 상태이며 온라인 게임 등 다른 장르의 게임 평가항목을 이용하여 왔다. 특히 게임의 재미 요소를 근간으로 하는 평가 항목을 적용하기에는 어려움이 따르며 장르 및 플렛폼에 따라 평가 항목이 다양하여 증강 현실에 적합한 평가 항목을 개발하여 이를 적용하여 유용성을 확인한다.
