  • The purpose of this study was to examine how oral health literacy of mothers affect the oral health status of their preschool children. The subjects were 233 mothers and their preschool children who are between 5 and 6 years old. They were selected according to the convenience sampling method. The individual self-administered questionnaire was used for the mother's survey while the children were interviewed using structured questionnaire to examine their oral health status and behavior. According to study results, the number of decayed primary teeth and the number of decayed and filled primary teeth had a statistically significant negative correlation with the oral health literacy of the mother, the children's oral health knowledge, attitude and behavior (COHKAB), and the mother's oral health management behavior. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed after including general characteristics variables, the COHKAB and the mother's oral health management behavior. Meanwhile, mother's oral health literacy had a statistically influence on children's oral health status. The higher the mother's oral health literacy level, the lower the number of decayed and filled primary teeth were. The findings suggest that efforts to improve the oral health status of preschool children should consider mother's oral health literacy as an important factor. Therefore, the effective intervention and education programs are necessary to enhance mother's oral health literacy.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing family caregivers' reaction of persons with cancer. The study participants were 130 cancer patients and their family caregivers. Data on participant characteristics, caregiver reaction, perceived social support, and cancer related health literacy were collected from July 17 to November 7, 2018 using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed with the SPSS/WIN 23.0 program for descriptive statistics, using independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficient and enter multiple regression analysis. The determining factors affecting caregivers' reaction were in case of spouse of patient(${\beta}=.252$, p=.002), subjective health status(${\beta}=-.207$ p=.012), and health literacy (self-care, patient's needs and preference) (${\beta}=-.411$, p<.001; ${\beta}=.247$, p=.037 respectively), and their explanation power was about 37.9%. This finding underscores the need for developing and application of the individualized education program with health literacy improvement strategies for family caregivers of cancer patients.

  • This study is aimed to verify the impact of health literacy on communication competence in nursing students. 104 nursing students participated in this descriptive research with an online self-reported questionnaire from May 3 to 21, 2021, at a university located in G city. The data were analyzed by two-sample t-test, ANOVA and hierarchical regression with SPSS program. The score of health literacy was 48.62/66 and the communication competence was 59.60/75. More than half perceived that the average reading level of Korean adults was higher than the actual. subjective health status(β=.309, p<.001), health literacy(β=.284, p=.002) and subjective academic grade(β=.235, p=.009) had significant influence on communication competence in the nursing students(F=10.546, p<.001). The explanatory power increased 7.3% more by adding health literacy(F=10.339, p=.002). To enhance communication competence of nursing students, more systematic curriculums to improve health literacy are needed.

  • Purpose: This study develops a health literacy instrument for Alzheimer's disease. Methods: Items were drawn from The Korean version of the Alzheimer's Disease Knowledge Scale (ADKS) and the Korean version of European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q47 & HLS-EU-Q16). Content validity was tested by experts. To further refine the questionnaires and test their reliability and validity, data were collected from 324 older adults in the community. Results: Five significant items in the two subscales were derived from the factor analysis. The subscales were named access and understanding. Reliability was good at Cronbach's ⍺ .79, and validity through exploratory factor analysis was KMO .897, p<.001, which was found to be high and significant. Conclusion: The instrument demonstrated high reliability and validity. Therefore, this instrument can contribute to the evaluation of health literacy for Alzheimer's Disease in older adults and to any subsequent intervention, as well as to develop a theory for health literacy for Alzheimer's Disease.

  • Purpose: This descriptive research study aimed to identify the effect of the health literacy and self-efficacy on the quality of care service of home visitor care workers. Methods: The participants were 124 home visitor care workers who had worked for more than six months at one of the five home-based welfare centers located in D metropolitan city. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression analysis using the SPSS program. Results: The quality of care service differed significantly by age (F=-1.03, p<.001), career (F=5.09, p=.002), and education status (F=9.57, p<.001). A statistically significant positive relationship was observed between the quality of care service and self-efficacy (r=.63, p<.001). A total of 55.3% of the variance of quality of care service was explained by age and self-efficacy. Conclusion: Based on the results, it is necessary to develop and prepare programs that can increase the self-efficacy of home visitor care workers through a nursing approach to improve the quality of life of elderly.

A total of 149 outpatients receiving regular hemodialysis at four dialysis centers located in J city were surveyed. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression. Factors including social support (β=.37, p<.001), health literacy (β=.16, p=.035), and religion (others) (β=-.25, p=.001) had an effect on sick role behavior. The explanatory power of model in this study was 22.0%. Therefore, the improvement of sick role behavior in patients undergoing hemodialysis requires specific strategies and interventions that are effective in increasing the social support and health literacy.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop, validate, and assess the reliability of a questionnaire for nutritional literacy among young Korean adults. Methods: The draft questionnaire contained 65 items in 7 domains (i.e., dietary guideline, nutrition and health, nutrients, 5 food groups [food bicycle], nutrition labeling, portion size, and nutrition management for disease prevention). The authors developed a draft questionnaire based on a literature review. After multiple drafts, 52 items were retained and 13 were eliminated in the 7 domains according to professional advice from 5 nutrition experts. A panel of experts (n = 20) comprised of clinical dietitians and nutrition professors completed the content validity assessment, including quantitative and qualitative feedback. As the results, all items of the portion size were eliminated from the questionnaire. A sample of 211 young adults completed the test-retest reliability assessment. Test-retest reliability was evaluated using intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and inter-item reliability by Cronbach α coefficient. Results: The final questionnaire contained 30 items with 5 questions each on the dietary guideline, nutrition and health, nutrients, 5 food groups (food bicycle), nutrition labeling, and nutrition management for disease prevention. The Lawshe content validity ratio for domains ranged from 0.60 to 1.00. The ICC scores for questions ranged from 0.64 to 0.86. Cronbach's α for domains ranged from 0.83 to 0.90 and for the overall questionnaire was 0.87. Conclusion: The questionnaire showed strong content validity, test-retest reliability, and high inter-item reliability, indicating that it is a useful tool for assessing nutritional literacy of young adults.
