  • In this paper, a dynamic warning system to forecast inland flooding associated with typhoons and storms is described. The system is used operationally during the typhoon season to anticipate the potential impact such as inland flooding on the coastal zone of interest. The system has been developed for the use of the public and emergency management officials. Simple typhoon models for quick prediction of wind fields are implemented in a user-friendly way by using a Graphical User Interface (GUI) of MATLAB. The main program for simulating tides, depth-averaged tidal currents, wind-driven surges and currents was also vectorized for the fast performance by MATLAB. By pushing buttons and clicking the typhoon paths, the user is able to obtain real-time water level fluctuation of specific points and the flooding zone. This system would guide local officials to make systematic use of threat information possible. However, the model results are sensitive to typhoon path, and it is yet difficult to provide accurate information to local emergency managers.

  • This study was carried out to understand feeding ecology of black rockfish, Sebastes inermis in the coastal waters off Shinsudo, Sachon. The specimens were collected by angling, gill net, small danish seine, and long-bag net from February 1984 to May 1985. The fish consisted of 5 age groups from 0 to 4. Feeding activity was more intensive in the early morning and late afternoon in spring and summer, but the fish showed intermittent feeding activities in autumn and winter. Although the food items of the fish changed slightly by seasons and with growth of the fish, main food items were cope pods, gammarids, caprellids, carideans, polychaetes, and brachyurans. Of these food items, cope pods were major preys for the fish of age group 0, and gammarids over age group 1. Evenness and diversity of the food items increased as the fish grew. In consideration of feeding organs, digestive organs and stomach contents of the fish, S. inermis seemed to be not only carnivore but also visual feeder consuming mainly small crustaceans.

  • Algicidal bacteria were isolated from the mud of south coastal sea of Korean peninsula and screened to evaluate algicidal activity on Cochlodinium polykrikoides. The optimum condition for the development of highest algicidal activity was determined, The optimum sodium chloride concentration for algicidal activity of isolated algicidal bacteria was $3\%$. The optimum temperature, pH and culture time for the highest algicidal activity were $30^{\circ}C$, pH 7 and above 24 hr, respectively. The algicidal activity were significantly increased at the stationary phase of the cell growth and continuously increased up to maximum at the death phase, probably due to the release of algicidal substance by cell Iysis. The effect of zinc ion addition on algicidal activity, was observed and indicated that the substance requires zinc for its activity. The candidate for the algicidal substance may be $\alpha$-mannosidase.

  • Monthly changes in the occurrence and infection levels of a parasitic copepod Acanthochondria yui(Poecilostomatoida, Chondracanthidae) on a gobiid fish Acanthogobius flavimanus were studied for a year from April 1990 to March 1991. This parasite was not found on the fish for four months from September to December. Prevalence of the parasite increased from $2.9\%$ in January to $88.9\%$ in June. Relative density and mean intensity also increased from January to June. Prevalence of A. yui increased with host size. A. flavimanus samples were never found carrying A. yui larvae of three copepodid stages(CI to CIII), although a few CIV and CV larvae were identified from April and May samples. This indicates that A. flavimanus was not the sole host of A. yui. Adult females and copepodites of A. yui were usually found in the gill arch($74.8\%$) and gill filament($80.6\%$), respectively. This suggests that copepodites select the gill filament as the most suitable place on their host A. flavimanus, and the adult females move toward the gill arch.

  • The taste characteristics and functionality of low-utilized small longfinned squid as affected by two stage enzyme hydrolysis were examined. In taste active-components, total free amino acid contents in hot-water and autolytic extract, two stage enzyme hydrolysate (TSEH) of longfinned squid were 2,792.5 mg%, 8,393.8 mg% and 9,186.1 mg%, respectively. The major free amino acids were Pro, Leu, Glu, Tau, Lys, Arg, Phe, Val and Ile. As for quarternary ammonium bases, betaine was the principal component (593.8 mg%) and also contents of TMAO, AMP in longfinned squid TSEH were 234.8% mg% and 51.0 mg%, respectively. The major inorganic ions in TSEH were Na(874.0 mg%), K (398.2 mg%), Cl (1,213.1 mg%) and PO$_4$(995.9 mg%). From the results in sensory tests, TSEH was superior to other extracts on the aspects of taste characteristics such as umami intensity, sweetness, taste harmony and transparency of extract. Also TSEH of longfinned squid revealed very higher Angiotensin-I converting enzyme inhibition ratio (92.1%) than those of hot-water and autolytic extract.

  • This study gives the characteristics of sedimentation-consolidation and surface strength for dredging and landfill areas in each coast. For the analysis of the sedimentation-consolidation characteristics, the column tests were performed and the results were compared with existing various literatures and design reports for dredged soil disposal. The surface strength of landfill soils of west and south coast were investigated by using the portable cone tester. As a results of analysis, the coefficient of sedimentation-consolidation on south coastal dredging soils is more sensitive with variation of initial water contents than on the west coastal dredging soils. And the surface strength of the dredging landfills is a higher in the west coast than in the south coast. Finally, the results of this study will be utilized as a basis data for analysis and design in the field of dredging and landfill.

  • In this paper, a wave-induced swirl water chamber (SWC) for breakwater and wave power generation is introduced and its applicability to wave power generation in the coastal waters of Korea is investigated. The SWC type of wave power generation is a way to drive a turbine using the unidirectional swirl flow that is induced in the back of a curtain wall of a breakwater due to incident waves. The typical wave characteristics are obtained by analyzing the annual statistical wave data from KHOA (Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration). A numerical analysis is carried out on the variations in the SWC entrance height, wave height, and different installation conditions. For the numerical analysis, a commercial code, Fluent based on FVM, is used. As the entrance height decreases, the mass flow rate through the entrance is rarely changed, whereas the magnitude of the flow velocity of the smaller entrance height is greater than the other ones, which is better for the formation of an SWC swirl flow inside and the flow kinetic energy at the entrance. In cases of installation conditions where a wall is place behind and under SWC, it has been shown that the mass flow rate through the entrance is greater than that in the open condition, and sufficient flow kinetic energy is generated in the entrance for wave power generation. However, the swirl flow kinetic energy is relatively small. Thus, in the future, it is necessary to study the swirl flow generation, which is affected by the SWC shape.

  • The electro-magnetic wave propagates through the air in the terrestrial communications, but the acoustic wave propagates through the seawater in the underwater acoustic communication(UAC). It makes the differences between the UAC link and the well hon air communication links. In this paper, we have studied path loss, absorption and ambient noise of the ocean as a medium for UAC. We have analyzed the absorption coefficient and ambient noise level of the coastal area of South Korea and suggested a strategy for the selection of the frequency band by considering the absorption coefficient and ambient noise level. Also, we present an illustrative example of a link budget for the QPSK UAC system which has carrier frequency 25kHz, bit rate 10kbps, range 1km and BER $10^{-3}$ in the shallow water environment with an ideal AWGN assumption.

  • An abundance of internal waves is observed by SAR in the Yellow Sea during summer. They are small scaled internal waves and are not relatively studied well compared to the ones in the East/South China Sea. These internal waves should be considered in the study of physio-biological properties of the Yellow Sea because the mixing of the stratified surface water caused by internal waves during summer is important for ocean biological environment, and they also affect the sediment transport and acoustic signal transmission in the continental shelf region. To understand the characteristics of internal waves, it is important to get the spatio-temporal information of internal waves simultaneously by executing in-situ measurements as well as the SAR observation. This study tracks the internal waves observed by SAR in the time series of temperature profile data by analyzing simultaneously acquired in-situ measurement data and RADARSAT SAR image on 29 May 2002.
