  • Seashore landfill projects use undersea pump dredging method for construction of airport and factory site. Coarse grain soil from the dredging is considered for use at inland. West sea shore bottom consists of primarily coarser grained silt-sand and this component contains far more percentage than is the case with East sea and South sea area. This soil shows very different characteristic at consolidation and compaction behavior. This research targets to utilize this type of dredging soil. Test specimen is from West sea (Saemangum) dredged soil landfill site. Model analysis is done for getting prediction of original soil relative density and N-value from dynamic compaction energy variance. Dynamic compaction energy is calculated for efficient foundation design.

  • Phytolith of soil in earthenware buried in the wooden chamber tombs at the archaeological site in Hwangseong-dong, Gyeongju along Hyeongsan River are analyzed. The study area has adjoined the seat of government during approximately thousand years in Shilla Dynasty and can be regarded as being closely related to the agricultural activities using the floodplains of Hyeongsan River. By the analytical results, Phragmites, Paniceae and Andropogoneae as well as Oryza sativa are found in the lower horizons, indicating the agricultural activities in the nearby areas. It is suggested for understanding the use of earthenware that the comparisons of buried soils in the site and soils in the earthenware and analysis on the macro plant fossils of soil in the earthenware are needed.

  • Turbidity meter calibrations were conducted using bottom sediment and suspended material collected with a vertical array of sediment traps at the coastal water off Gaduk Island. Compared to the bottom sediment comprising sand fraction of approximately 6%, trapped suspended material was composed entirely of silt and clay fractions and showed a tendency to get finer as elevation from the sea-bed increases. Slope parameter of linear regression due to bottom sediment was of minimum value and values of those due to suspended material increased gradually as the height of sediment trap increases (i.e., sediment size decreases). This result shows that turbidity meter calibration using bottom sediment can cause an overestimation error in the calculation of suspended sediment concentration and that the error can reach up to 25% in case of this study. Therefore, it is suggested that the use of a corrected calibration curve based on grain size distribution of suspended material instead of bottom sediment may reduce the measurement error of suspended sediment concentration.

  • Water waves are generated mainly by winds in open seas and large lakes. They carry a significant amount of energy from winds into near-shore region. Thereby they significantly contribute to the regional hydrodynamics and transport process, producing strong physical, geological and environmental impact on coastal environment and on human activities in the coastal area. Furthermore an accurate prediction of the hydrodynamic effects due to wave interaction with offshore structures is a necessary requirement in the design, protection and operation of such structures. In the present paper surface and internal waves scattering by thin surface-piercing and bottom-standing vertical barriers in a two-layer fluid is analyzed in two-dimensions within the context of linearized theory of water waves. The reflection coefficients for surface and internal waves are computed and analyzed in various cases. It is found that wave reflection is strongly dependent on the interface location and the fluid density ratio apart from the barrier geometry.

  • In order to control waves in coastal zones effectively, multi-cylinder piles as the economical structures are suggested. A three dimensional hydraulic model experiment was performed to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of the structure. An experimental study was carried out research the effect of wave control and harbor tranquility through the wave height analysis for the existing concrete wave breaker and the structure with acrylic multi-cylinder piles type at the same location. In the results, the effective order of harbor tranquility is shown as the wave breaker > the staggered arrangement of multi-cylinder piles > the regular arrangement of multi-cylinder piles.

  • A new formulae for the estimation of the exposure duration in the inter-tidal zone are developed. The exposure duration is one of the most important factors influencing the habitat distribution of the benthic organisms. The formulae can estimate the exposure duration only using the four major tidal harmonic constants available in almost coastal areas. It is easier than the existing method using the frequency analysis of the hourly tidal elevation data. The estimation results by using the formulae suggested in this study are compared with the value by using the observed tidal elevation data analysis in the west coast, Korea. The mean RMS (root-mean squared) errors ranged form 0.8 to 1.4%. It can be used to simply estimate the accurate exposure duration in the region not having the longterm hourly tidal elevation data.

  • A primary study on the rapid modeling of storm surge, which is one of typical coastal disasters, for immediate forecasting in conjunction with typhoon advisories is done and tested for the typhoons Bolaven, Tembin and Sanba which attacked to Korean Peninsula on August and September in this year 2012. Semi automatic rapid computations according to JTWC typhoon advisories were performed and uploaded to the web by models SLOSH in PC and ADCIRC in parallel clusters with 64 cores having 57k nodes encompassing the North-Western Pacific region. It only takes 1 and 2 hours from taking advisory to web uploading, respectively. By comparison with observed water surface elevations for the major tidal stations after Bolaven attack it shows within RMS error of 0.17~0.19 m for surge heights and only deviates 1 hour of peak surge time in ADCIRC model. Thus it is concluded that this approach provides a frame of near real-time immediate forecasting of storm surges with satisfactions.

  • The basic information of mean sea level data of all tidal monitoring stations in Korea was reviewed, and the correlation coefficients between the stations were analyzed. Mean sea level changes expected due to global climate change effects were found to show a high correlation of more than 0.75 regardless of the distance between the stations were analyzed. The data between certain stations were found to have negative correlation and low correlation of 0.25 or less, but this was determined by the influence of small data numbers and outliers. However, since these correlations assume a linear increase and a linear relationship, the estimation results may be distorted for data with fluctuating trends that deviate from this assumption. Based on the results of the changing patterns of the MSL data, it shows that a number of the MSL data do not follow the linear trend.

  • It has an important meaning that the maintenance and management of facility for a onshore construction shall be damaged by oceanic environment. A movement and displacement of these shall be investigated by up-to-date machinery tools like GPS and Lidar and MBES & Gyro. In current a lot of tools and methods for investigation shall be used as a displacement and movement on land mainly. For underwater facility it is very difficult to check because of special conditions below the water surface. In this study, a surveying methods for a movement and displacement of underwater facility as caisson shall be used, i.e. multibeam-echo-sounding system. A possibility as basic data for displacement and environmental monitoring shall be studied by MBES to acquire a caisson's inclination.

  • To analyze incident waves traveling from the deep ocean is very important in that it is based on resolving problems occurred in coastal areas. In general, numerical models and analytical solutions are used to analyze wave transformation. Although a numerical model can be applied to various bottoms and wave conditions, it may have some cumbersome numerical errors. On the other hand, an analytical solution has an advantage of obtaining the solution quickly and accurately without numerical errors. The analytical solution can, however, be utilized only for specific conditions. In this study, the analytical solution of the mild-slope equation has been developed. It can be applied to various conditions combing a numerical technique and an analytical approach while minimizing the numerical errors. As a result of comparing the obtained solutions in this study with those of the previously developed numerical model, A good agreement was observed.
