  • Purpose: This study was done to identify the degree that perceived social support effects the self esteem of the elderly. Method: A structured questionnaire was administered to 203 elderly subjects from April 2003 to June 2003. The data were analyzed with an SPSS program for escriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, t-test, ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression. Result: The level of social support was moderate; family support received the highest score among sources of support. In types of support, appraisal support was the highest score and material was the lowest. The level of self esteem was also moderate. The score of social support showed a slightly high positive correlation with self esteem. In general characteristics, several variables were significantly related to self esteem. The most powerful predictor of self esteem was material support by family and the variance explained was 19.6%. A combination of material support by family, informational support by relatives, perceived economic status, perceived health status, and having a subject to depend on accounted for 39.8% of the variance in self esteem of the elderly. Conclusion: To increase the self esteem of the elderly, it is necessary to consolidate material support by family.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify levels of hope, self-esteem, and quality of life, and to find correlations among these variables in people with spinal cord injury. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional descriptive survey. The data were collected by survey interview in 2010 from 120 people with spinal cord injury living in the community. To measure hope, self-esteem and quality of life, the Dispositional Hope Scale, Self-Esteem Scale, and World Health Organization's Quality of Life Instrument were utilized respectively. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and stepwise multiple regression analysis using SPSS version 12.0. Results: Mean score of hope was 2.56 and that of self-esteem was 3.23. Mean score of quality of life was 3.01. Statistically significant relationships were found between quality of life and hope (r=.73, p<.001), and between quality of life and self-esteem (r=.67, p<.001). Multiple regression analyses showed that hope and self-esteem were statistically significant in predicting quality of life with the explanatory power of 59.1%. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that nursing interventions fostering hope and self-esteem should be integrated in developing rehabilitation programs to improve quality of life for people with spinal cord injury.

  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between mothers' parenting, children's self-esteem, and stress. The participants were composed of 320 elementary school 5th graders (161 boys and 159 girls) from the Seoul area. They completed questionnaires on mothers' parenting, children's self-esteem, and stress. The data were analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation coefficients and regressions. It was observed that maternal warmth was negatively correlated with children's stress in both boys and girls. Children's self-esteem was also negatively correlated with children's stress in both boys and girls. in addition maternal warmth was positively correlated with self-esteem in both boys and girls. It was futher found that self-esteem tended to play a partially mediating role between maternal warmth and children's stress only in boys. Self-esteem tended to play a perfectly mediating role between maternal permissiveness/nonintervention and children's stress only in girls. These results indicated that children's self-esteem plays a crucial role in improving the levels of children's stress.

  • Purpose: To consider how college students' adjustment to college life is related to peer attachment and self-esteem. Method: The subjects were 183 female college students attending one university. The study data were collected with the inventory of peer attachment-revised version, the self-esteem inventory, and the inventory for adjustment to college life. The data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. Results: There were significant differences in self-esteem according to residence type. There were significant differences in the adjustment to college life according to monthly income. There was a significantly positive correlation between peer attachment and adjustment to college life. There were significantly positive correlations between self-esteem and adjustment to college life and all of the subscales of adjustment to college life. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that 28.6% of the adjustment to college life was significantly explained by self-esteem and monthly income. Conclusion: Based on these findings, peer attachment is a very important factor influencing self-esteem which is itself a very important factor influencing adjustment to college life in female college students. Therefore, an alternative program designed to increase the self-esteem and peer attachment of female college students should be a planned program based on the study results.

Participants consisted of 2,259 middle school students from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Study 2012. Secondary questionnaire data on parental abuse and neglect, self-esteem, and school life adjustment are used for this study. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, Cronbach's a, Pearson's correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. Baron and Kenny's method determined the mediation effect. SPSS ver 18.0 was adopted. The results were as follows. First, parental abuse and neglect were negatively correlated with the adolescent school life adjustment; however self-esteem was positively correlated with adolescent school life adjustment. Second, the results of the regression analysis revealed that adolescent school life adjustment was influenced both directly and indirectly; parental abuse had a direct effect on adolescents' school life adjustment and also had an indirect effect on mediated by self-esteem. Parental neglect had a direct effect on adolescent school life adjustment and had an indirect effect on adolescent school life adjustment mediated by self-esteem. The results indicated that self-esteem plays a crucial variable in the relationship of parental abuse and the school life adjustment. Also, self-esteem plays a crucial variable in the relationship between parental neglect and school life adjustment.

  • This study investigates an association among Facebook users' upward comparison (e.g., envy), social support (e.g., favorable comments and like), and life satisfaction, putting their self-esteem as a mediating variable. For this analysis, 1,332 female and male Facebook users in Seoul and other four cities in South Korea were surveyed. Structural equation modeling including confirmative factor analysis were employed as quantitative analysis methods. Results show that Facebook users' upward comparison with other users and social support significantly impact their satisfaction mediated by their self-esteem. Specifically, when users feel envious of other users, this emotion lowers their self-esteem, and subsequently, the self-esteem reduces their satisfaction. On the other hand, sufficient social support for users positively affects their self-esteem, which leads to the increase of their satisfaction. The present study is differentiated from previous studies in that it focuses on Facebook users' emotional changes in the process of sharing massive amounts of posts and finds a stepwise relationship among their feelings, including self-esteem as a mediating variable. Additionally, this study is the first to verify a situation when Facebook users' envy of other users' posts affects the decline in their satisfaction through the mediation of their self-esteem.

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of rejection sensitivity on aggression and to determine the mediating role of self-esteem level and its stability. Data based on self-report questionnaires from a sample of 312(N=312) undergraduate and graduate students were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0, and the Amos 18.0. Results from the structural equation modeling indicated that rejection sensitivity had a negative impact on self-esteem level and a positive impact on self-esteem instability. Self-esteem level had a negative impact on aggression. Self-esteem instability had a positive impact on aggression. The effect of rejection sensitivity on aggression was fully mediated by self-esteem level and instability. Current findings add to the extent literature on the influence of rejection sensitivity on self-esteem level, self-esteem instability, and aggression. Implications of the present study, limitations of current study as well as suggestions for future study were also included in the discussion.
