  • Failure mechanisms were investigated for the two layer thermal barrier coatings consisting of NiCrAlY bond coat and $ZrO_2-8wt.\% Y_{2}O_3$ ceramic coating during cyclic oxidation. $Al_{2}O_3$ developed at the ceramic coating/bond coat interface first, followed by the Cr/Ni rich oxides such as $NiCr_{2}O_4 and Ni(Al,Cr)_{2}O_4$ during cyclic oxidation It was observed that the spalling of ceramic coatings took place primarily within the NiCrAlY bond coat oxidation products or at the interface between the bond coat oxidation products and zirconia based ceramic coating or the bond coat. It was also observed that the fracture within these oxidation products occurred with the formation of $Ni(Cr,Al)_{2}O_4$ spinel or Cr/Ni rich oxides. It was therefore concluded that the formation of these oxides was a life-limiting event for the thermal barrier coatings.

  • Structure of premartensite in $Ti_{50}Ni_{49}Fe_1\;and\;Ti_{50}Ni_{50}$ prepared by self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) method has been investigated by a detailed transmission electron microscopy. $Ti_{50}Ni_{49}Fe_1$ consists of microdomain area and needle type domain area. On the other hand, $Ti_{50}Ni_{50}$ consists of microdomain-free and microdomain area, and needle type domain area. Various types of extra superreflections, such as 1/2<100>, 1/2<110> and 1/4<210> type superreflection have been observed in the selected area electron diffractions from microdomain area. Such extra superreflections are due to transformation from B2 structure to distorted B2 structure or premartensite. The present study shows that incommensurate phase forms as an intermediate phase during martensitic transformation. Particularly, in Fe-free $Ti_{50}Ni_{50}$, two types of matrix phases have been observed, microdomain and microdomain-free area. Types of extra superreflections in $Ti_{50}Ni_{50}$ are different from those in $Ti_{50}Ni_{49}Fe_1$, i.e. 1/7<321> type superreflections have been observed, instead of 1/2<110>, 1/2<100>, 1/4<210> types in $Ti_{50}Ni_{49}Fe_1$.

  • The present study aims at the examination of the effects of 1 mol% NiO addition on the reaction, microstructure development, resultant electrical properties, and especially the bulk trap and interface state levels of $ZnO-Bi_2O_3-Sb_2O_3$ (Sb/Bi=0.5, 1.0, and 2.0) systems (ZBS). The samples were prepared by conventional ceramic process, and characterized by density, XRD, SEM, I-V, impedance and modulus spectroscopy (IS & MS) measurement. The sintering and electrical properties of Ni-doped ZBS (ZBSN) systems were controlled by Sb/Bi ratio. Pyrochlore ($Zn_2Bi_3Sb_3O_{14}$) was decomposed more than $100^{\circ}C$ lowered in ZBS (Sb/Bi=1.0) by Ni doping. The reproduction of pyrochlore was suppressed by the addition of Ni in ZBS. Between two polymorphs of $Zn_7Sb_2O_{12}$ spinel ($\alpha$ and $\beta$), microstructure of ZBSN (Sb/Bi=0.5) composed of a-spinel was more homogeneous than $Sb/Bi{\geq}1.0$ composed of $\beta$-spinel phase. In ZBSN, the varistor characteristics were not improved drastically (non-linear coefficient $\alpha\;=\;6{\sim}11$) and independent on microstructure according to Sb/Bi ratio. Doping of Ni to ZBS seemed to form ${V_0}^{\cdot}$ (0.33 eV) as dominant bulk defect. From IS & MS, especially the grain boundaries of Sb/Bi=0.5 systems were divided into two types, i.e. sensitive to oxygen and thus electrically active one and electrically inactive intergranular one with temperature.

  • Monomeric complexes of nickel(II) having terdentate bis(imino)aryl ligands (N,C,N-pincer) are reported. New complexes (2,6-(ArN=CH)2C6H3)NiBr (Ar=2,6-dimethylphenyl (1), 2,6-diisopropylphenyl (2)) have been synthesized through oxidative addition of 1,3-(ArN=CH)2C6H3Br (bis(N-Ar)-2-bromoisophthalaldimine: Ar=Ph-2,6-Me2, Ph-2,6-iPr2) to Ni(COD)2 (COD=1,5-cyclooctadiene), in high yields. The development of a synthetic route to ligands and nickel complexes is outlined. The complexes were characterized by IR, 1H-NMR and elemental analysis. Full characterization of complexes 1 and 2 is discussed. An investigation into the catalytic activity of the complexes in ethylene polymerization was performed, resulting in no formation of polyethylenes but producing a small amount of oily oligomers. Preliminary results indicate that the pincer complexes were found to be inactive as catalysts in ethylene polymerization.

  • Let{$X_{ni}$\mid$\;1\;{\leq}\;i\;{\leq}\;k_n,\;n\;{\geq}\;1$} be an array of rowwise negatively associated random variables such that $P$\mid$X_{ni}$\mid$\;>\;x)\;=\;O(1)P($\mid$X$\mid$\;>\;x)$ for all $x\;{\geq}\;0,\;and\; \{k_n\}\;and\;\{r_n\}$ be two sequences such that $r_n\;{\geq}\;b_1n^r,\;k_n\;{\leq}\;b_2n^k$ for some $b_1,\;b_2,\;r,\;k\;>\;0$. Then it is shown that $\frac{1}{r_n}\;max_1$\mid${\Sigma_{i=1}}^j\;X_{ni}$\mid$\;{\rightarrow}\;0$ completely convergence and the strong convergence for weighted sums of N A arrays is also considered.

  • The paper presents the electrical performance measurements of a prototype nuclear battery and two types of betavoltaic cells. The electrical performance was assessed by measuring current-voltage properties (I-V) and determining the short-circuit current and the open-circuit voltage. With 63Ni as an irradiation source, the open-circuit voltage and the short-circuit current were determined as 1 V and 64 nA, respectively. The prototype consisted of 10 betavoltaic cells that were prepared using radioactive 63Ni. Electroplating of the radioactive 63Ni on an ohmic contact (Ti-Ni) was carried out at a current density of 20 mA/㎠. Two types of betavoltaic cells were studied: with an external 63Ni source and a 63Ni-covered source. Under irradiation of the 63Ni source with an activity of 10 mCi, the open-circuit voltage Voc of the fabricated cells reached 151 mV and 109 mV; the short-circuit current density Jsc was measured to be 72.9 nA/cm2 and 64.6 nA/㎠, respectively. The betavoltaic cells had the fill factor of 55% and 50%, respectively.

  • Codeposion of inert particles particles in a metallic mateix by electroless plating process involves two phenomena. Firstly, the adsorption of inercles and secondly, the adsorption of inert particles on the cathode. In the present paper the first adsorption phenomenon and in the next paper the second ane are studied in greaterdetail for the Ni-SiCc, Ni-Al2AO3 and Ni-WC systems. Measurements of the Zeta potentials for the SiC and Al2AO3 particles have been in different electrolyte solutions and the ionic species adsorbed on the Particles studied. The addition of sodium acetate, trisodium citrate and sodium phosphinate to nikel sulface sruomotes the zeta potential of SiC and Al2O3 particles, but zeta phosphinate to nickel is more positive than Al2O3 particles although the amount of nickel ion adsorbrd on the Al2O3 particles become greater than that of SiC particles. It is suggested that this is due to adsortion of Na ion onto the surface SiC particles.

  • The magnetic and electronic properties of Ni impurity in bcc Fe ($Ni_1Fe_{26}$) are investigated using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method based the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). We found that the Ni impurity in bcc Fe increases both the lattice constant and the magnetic moment of bcc Fe. The calculated equilibrium lattice constant of $Ni_1Fe_{26}$ in the ferromagnetic state was 2.84 A, which is slightly larger than that of bcc Fe (2.83 ${\AA}$). The averaged magnetic moment per atom of $Ni_1Fe_{26}$ unit cell was calculated to be $2.24{\mu}_B$, which is greater than that of bcc Fe (2.17 ${\mu}_B$). The enhancement of magnetic moment of $Ni_1Fe_{26}$ is mainly contributed by the nearest neighbor Fe atom of Ni, i.e., Fe1, and this can be explained by the spin flip of Fe1 d states. The density of states shows that Ni impurity forms a virtual bound state (VBS), which is contributed by Ni $e_{g{\downarrow}}$ states. We suggest that the VBS caused by the Ni impurity is responsible for the spin flip of Fe1 d states.

  • We studied on structure and resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of NiCr and NiCr-N thin resistor films prepared by do reactive magnetron sputtering of NiCr target. It is found that while pure NiCr films are polycrystalline, an addition of nitrogen (N2/(Ar+N2) ratios are between 10% and 70%) into the film is changed into amorphous structure and sheet resistance of films is increased. Measurement temperatures of TCR are ratios of $5^{\circ}C$ per 15min from $25^{\circ}C$ to $130^{\circ}C$. TCR for an as-deposited NiCr-N thin film is varied from positive to negative.

  • The typical double-barrier magnetic tunnel junction (DMTJ) structure examined in this paper consists of a Ta 45/Ru 9.5/IrMn 10/CoFe7/$AlO_x$/free layer/AlO/CoFe 7/IrMn 10/Ru 60 (nm). The free layer consists of an $Ni_{16}Fe_{62}Si_8B_{14}$ 7 nm, $Co_{90}Fe_{10}$ (fcc) 7 nm, or CoFe $t_1$/NiFeSiB $t_2$/CoFe $t_1$ layer in which the thicknesses $t_1$ and $t_2$ are varied. The DMTJ with an NiFeSiB-free layer had a tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of 28%, an area-resistance product (RA) of $86\;k{\Omega}{\mu}m^2$, a coercivity ($H_c$) of 11 Oe, and an interlayer coupling field ($H_i$) of 20 Oe. To improve the TMR ratio and RA, a DMTJ comprising an amorphous NiFeSiB layer that could partially substitute for the CoFe free layer was investigated. This hybrid DMTJ had a TMR of 30%, an RA of $68\;k{\Omega}{\mu}m^2$, and a of 11 Oe, but an increased of 37 Oe. We confirmed by atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy that increased as the thickness of NiFeSiB decreased. When the amorphous NiFeSiB layer was thick, it was effective in retarding the columnar growth which usually induces a wavy interface. However, if the NiFeSiB layer was thin, the roughness was increased and became large because of the magnetostatic $N{\acute{e}}el$ coupling.
