We report on the technology of formation of sandwich structures based on fullerite films and on experimental results in research of optical and conductivity properties of these sandwich samples. Single crystals of sapphire (100) or silicon were used as substrates. The sandwich specimens were based on the structure M/$C_{60}$/M (M=Cr, Pd, Ag, Al, Cu). The thickness of the fullerite films was about $0.2{\sim}1.0{\mu}m$. The area of the $C_{60}$ film under the top contact was about $1cm^{2}$. The specimens have been investigated by infrared spectroscopy, spectra-photometry, ellipsometry and X-ray diffraction analysis. Measurements of the current/voltage characteristics and research on the temperature dependence of conductivity were performed as well. It was shown that metals such as Cr, Pd, Ag, Al, and Cu penetrate easily into the fullerite films. It appears that these specimens have a large conductivity. For silver/$C_{60}$ and other sandwich structures the conductivities show a semiconductor-like behaviour.
The low energy excitations of spin waves (SWR) in thin films can be used for determination of the surface anisotropy constant and the nonhomogeneities of magnetization in the close-to-surface layer. The dispersion relation in SWR is sensitive on the geometry of experiment. We report on temperature dependence of surface magnetic anisotropy energy constant in magnetic semiconductor thin films of$ CdCr_{2-2x}In_{2x}Se_4$ at spin glass state. Samples were deposited by rf sputtering technique on Corning glass substrate in controlled temperature conditions. Coexistence of the infinite ferromagnetic network (IFN) and finite spin slusters (FSC) in spin glass state (SG) is know phenomena. Some behavior typical for long range magnetic ordering is expected in samples at SG state. The spin wave resonance experiment (microwave spectrometer at X-band) with excited surface modes was applied to describe the energy state of surface spins. We determined the surface magnetic anisotropy energy constant versus temperature using the surface inhomogeneities model of magnetic thin films. It was found that two components contribute to the surface magnetic anisotropy energy. One originates from the exchange interaction term due to the lack of translation symmetry for surface spin as well as from the originates from the exchange interaction term due to the lack of translation symmetry for surface spin as well as from the stray field of the surface roughness. The second one comes from the demagnetizing field of close-to surface layer with grad M. Both term linearly decrease when temperature is increased from 5 to 123 K, but dominant contribution is from the first component.
Al-Cr-Zr nanocomposite metal powders were prepared by mechnical alloying (MA) in order to develop aircraft structure materials with lighter weight and lower cost than the conventional Ti and Ni alloys. The morphological changes and microstrutural evolution of Al-6wt.%Cr-3wt.%Zr nanocomposite metal powders during MA were investigated by SEM, XRD and TEM. The approximately 50$\mu$m sized Al-Cr-Zr nanocomposite metal powders has been formed after 20 h of MA. The individual X-ray diffraction peaks of Al, Cr and Zr were broadened and peak intensitied were decreased as a function of MA time. The observed Al crystallite size by TEM was in the range of 20 nm, which is a simliar value calculated by Scherrer equation. The microhardness of Al-Cr-Zr nanocomposite metal powders increases alomost linearly with increase of the processing time, reaching a saturation hardness value of 127 kg/$mm^2$ after 20 h of processing. The intermetallic compound phase of $Al_3Zr_4$ in the matrix was identifed by XRD and TEM.
The corrosion and strength degradation characteristics of 1.25Cr-0.5Mo steels were studied under $650^{\circ}C$ in $76%N_2+6%O_2+16%CO_2+2%SO_2$ gas condition up to 500 hrs. Corroded specimens were characterized by weight gain, scanning electron microscope(SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS), and X-ray diffraction(XRD). The tensile test was conducted to evaluate the mechanical strength and fracture mode with corrosion at high temperature. As the results of the experiments, thick Fe-rich oxide layers over $200{\mu}m$ were formed on the surface within 500 hrs. The thick oxide layers are formed with reduction of the cross-sectional area of the specimens. Thus, the strength tended to decrease with reduction of the cross-sectional area.
In the present study, TiN and CrN films were coated by arc ion plating equipment onto aluminum alloy substrate, A2024. The film thickness was about 4.65 ${\mu}m$. TiN and CrN films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray equipments. The Young's modulus and the micro-Vickers hardness of aluminum substrate were modified by the ceramic film coatings. The difference in Young's modulus between substrate and coating film would affect on the wear resistance. The critical load, Lc, was 75.8 N for TiN and 85.5 N for CrN. It indicated from the observation of optical micrographs for TiN and CrN films that lots of cracks widely propagated toward the both sides of scratch track in the early stage of MODE I. TiN film began to delaminate completely at MODE II stage. The substrate was finally glittered at MODE III stage. For CrN film, a few crack can be observed at MODE I stage. The delamination of film was not still occurred at MODE II and then was happened at MODE III. This agrees with critical load measurement which the adhesive strength was greater for CrN film than for TiN film. Consequently, it was difficult for CrN to delaminate because the adhesive strength was excellent against Al substrate. The wear process, which the film adheres and the ball transfers, could be enhanced because of the increase in loading. The wear weight of ball was less for CrN than for TiN. This means that the wear damage of ball was greater for TiN than for CrN film. It is also obvious that it was difficult to delaminate because the CrN coating film has high toughness. The coefficient of friction was less for CrN coating film than for TiN film.

Emerald (3BeO.Al2O3.6SiO2 : Cr3+) single crystals were crystals were grown by reflux method of temperature gradient in the flux solution of Li2O-MoO3-V2O5 system. The composition of flux materials were 3 mole ratio of MoO3-V2O5/Li2O, subtituted 0.2 mole% of K2O, Na2O, Nb2O5 etc to Li2O content, solved 10-15% of beryl to flux quantity and doped 1% of Cr2O3 to emerald amount. Those of mixing were melted at 110$0^{\circ}C$ in Pt containers of the 3 zone furnace of melt-growth-return to circulate continniously, specially it has been grown large emerald single crystal when thermal fluctuation was treated for 2hrs of once time a day at 1050-95$0^{\circ}C$ in growth zone, substitutional solid solution effect of Cr+3 ion for Al+3 to the growth of emerald single crystal was good. Emerald single crystals were c(0001) hexagonal crystal face of preferencial growth direction and m(1010) post side. When it had been durated for 5 months emerald single crystals of the firet size of 0.6mm thickness of seed crystal were grown 32$\times$65mm(c x m) of maximum size and 6.2mm thickness.
Flower-like nickel oxide (NiO) catalysts were coated on NiCrAl alloy foam using a hydrothermal method. The structural, morphological, and chemical bonding properties of the NiO catalysts coated on the NiCrAl alloy foam were investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. To obtain flower-like morphology of NiO catalysts on the NiCrAl alloy foam, we prepared three different levels of pH of the hydrothermal solution: pH-7.0, pH-10.0, and pH-11.5. The NiO morphology of the pH-7.0 and pH-10.0 samples exhibited a large size plate owing to the slow reaction of the hydroxide ($OH^-$) and nickel ions ($Ni^+$) in lower pH than pH-11.5. Flower-like NiO catalysts (${\sim}4.7{\mu}m-6.6{\mu}m$) were formed owing to the fast reaction of $OH^-$ and $Ni^{2+}$ by increased $OH^-$ concentration at high pH. Thus, the flower-like morphology of NiO catalysts on NiCrAl alloy foam depends strongly on the pH of the hydrothermal solution.
In high chromium cast iron, the control of matrix microstructure as well as carbide structure is important to the performance as a wear resistant material. In this study, 3.0% C-24.0% Cr white cast irons with various molybdenum contents(residual, 1.0%, 3.0% and 5.0%) were solidified conventionally and unidirectionally for studying their effects on the microstructure and hardness. In the conventional casting, two sets of castings were poured from each melt. One set of the castings consisted of cylindrical bars of 10 and 20mm by 155mm long. The second set of the castings was a cylindrical bar of 30mm by 200mm long. On the other hand, a pep-set mold set on the Cu plate was employed to make the solidification unidirectionally. X-ray diffraction method was used to observe retained austenite and carbides in the high chromium cast iron. The morphology of eutectic $M_7C_3$ carbides changed from needle-like type to nodular type with the increase of Mo content. And, the presence of $M_2C$ carbides was identified in the sample where Mo was added over 3.0 %. Primary and eutectic carbides appeared as rod type and corngrain type, respectively in the unidirectionally solidified samples which were cut to parallel to the solidification direction. In the EDX analysis, Cr concentration was higher in the primary and eutectic $M_7C_3$ carbides, Mo in the $M_2C$ carbides, and Fe in the matrix.
CrN coatings have been used as protective coatings for cutting tools, forming tools, and various tribological machining applications because these coatings have high hardness. Cr-Al-N coatings have been investigated to improve the properties of CrN coatings. Cr-Al-N coatings were fabricated by a hybrid physical vapor deposition method consisting of unbalanced magnetron sputtering and arc ion plating with different working pressure and substrate bias voltage. The phase analysis of the composition was performed using XRD (x-ray diffraction). Cr-Al-N coatings were grown with textured CrN phase and (111), (200), and (220) planes. The adhesion strength of the coatings tested by scratch test increased. The friction coefficient and removal rate of the coatings were measured by a ball-on-disk test. The friction coefficient and removal rate of the coatings decreased from 0.46. to 0.22, and from $2.00{\times}10^{-12}m^2/N$ to $1.31{\times}10^{-13}m^2/N$, respectively, with increasing bias voltage. The tribological properties of the coatings increased with increasing substrate bias voltage.
